pam Posted June 14, 2013 Report Posted June 14, 2013 This may have already been covered elsewhere, but any websites out there that have free and decent audio books that you can listen to online? I'm not wanting to download to any device but want to be able to listen to books while working. Quote
Dravin Posted June 14, 2013 Report Posted June 14, 2013 (edited) The quality of the recording is variable but you can take a look here: The LibriVox Free Audiobook Collection : Free Audio : Download & Streaming : Internet Archive Edited June 14, 2013 by Dravin Quote
pam Posted June 14, 2013 Author Report Posted June 14, 2013 Thanks Dravin. I've used that one but it's mainly the classics. I was hoping to find something more current. But I suppose to get current I will have to pay for it. Quote

pam Posted June 14, 2013 Author Report Posted June 14, 2013 Hmmm a thumb drive might be an option. Quote
bytebear Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 I download free books on my Android and use the text to speech. They have an improved voice that almost sounds human. Quote
rayhale Posted June 17, 2013 Report Posted June 17, 2013 There is also http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/ which has classics, read by volunteers. Outside of the computerized voice text-to-speech feature, there will be copyright concerns about any new book read by volunteers. Quote
John Pennington Posted August 17, 2014 Report Posted August 17, 2014 For free downloads of LDS Doctrine Audio books. Go to... www.mrmormon.com Quote
scdoyle Posted August 18, 2014 Report Posted August 18, 2014 Try Youtube. I just downloaded two audiobooks tonight for my wife. The probably won't be broken up into chapters, but you can use Audacity to do that. Quote
pam Posted August 18, 2014 Author Report Posted August 18, 2014 For free downloads of LDS Doctrine Audio books. Go to... www.mrmormon.comThat's only the book you wrote. And it sounds more like a podcast than a book from the parts I listened to. Quote
Honor Posted August 18, 2014 Report Posted August 18, 2014 Do you have a device that you could utilize but would rather not download content to it, or are you limited to a computer? I use the Hooplah and Overdrive apps, both of which connect to the Salt Lake County library system. I don't always find everything I'm searching for, but they have much more than just the classics, and I have found enough to keep me entertained. You can stream them through the app or temporarily download to listen offline for the duration of the "check out" time period, and they are removed from your device as soon as they are due. classylady 1 Quote
pam Posted August 19, 2014 Author Report Posted August 19, 2014 Currently just limited to a computer. Hope to change that sometime in the future. Quote
srmaher Posted November 15, 2014 Report Posted November 15, 2014 You be suprisedd with how many audiobooks are on youtube. Check it out. Also, check out booktv.org, they also have a YouTube channel. Each week they feature around 20 new books, where the author speaks for around an hour about their book. I have found they talk about the most important ideas from their book to get people to buy it. Anyway, the website is a treasure. Quote
Guest LiterateParakeet Posted November 15, 2014 Report Posted November 15, 2014 Pam, you can borrow current books from your local library and listen to those on your computer. My library uses Overdrive. I download audiobooks all the time, and I can listen to them on my computer, or my MP3 player. Quote
Connie Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 I second LiterateParakeet's idea. Overdrive has a great audiobook collection. I use them quite a bit, though the hold lists can get crazy sometimes. Just ask a librarian at your local library to show you how to access it from the online library. Quote
