Andy Rooney never said this.

On October 23, 2005, he wrote:

"There's a collection of racist and sexist remarks on the Internet under a picture of me with the caption ‘ANDY ROONEY SAID ON 60 MINUTES.’ If I could find the person who did write it using my name I would sue him."

Andy Opens His Mailbag

Here is the Snopes.com story outlining the whole myth.

Whoever did, I'd like to shake their hand because it's all 100% right on the money! B)

I watched Andy with Ali G on YOUTUBE.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpDyJObCKOY

I loved it. Sure, andy was impatient....AND FUNNY....HE was definately not racist. It was a shame how quickly the man jumped to racism. The interviewer could not ask a well thought out question, and he could not speak proper English to save his life.....Until Andy Rooney got up, and in perfect English cried racism. Maybe Ali should have respected Andy enough to conduct the interview in proper English.

Darlin', Ali G. is a character. His "character" cannot speak English; if he did, he would not be Ali G! That's what made this the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. I have tears running down my face.

Rooney was hysterical.

Racialist! Sounds like a Bushism.

Thank you for posting it!

Honey, LOL i didn't know he was a character. I tell ya, i don't think he was in character at the end. I thought it was a serious interview.

Tells ya what I know about pop culture.

Yeah,

Sasha Cohen is a pretty funny guy, but even if he is a Jew does it make it okay for him to sing the throwing jews down the well song? I wonder about the limits of anti-semitism.

About the Andy Rooney thing . . . I realy hate it when people make up junk and post it on the web under another person's name. He is certainly an acerbic person, but a bigot? Not on National TV anyway. They would have fired him quicker than Imus.

Sometimes Andy Rooney is funny, and sometimes his wit is priceless. But 60-minutes and Dateline are corruptions of true investigative reporting, imho. They decide on a conclusion, and then make the story flow to that end. Don't confuse 'em with the facts.

So, I find this phony citation rather ironic.

I know Rooney did not author the stuff in the beginning of his thread but is any of it actually bigoted? Which portion (s)?

For Finian:

Highlighted in Red are the bigoted statements (there mostly likely are more):

Try to have things like the UnitedCaucasianCollege Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens...Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door. -If you can't work why I highlighted this, you need professional help!

-See my first statement.

I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English!

-My grandparents barely speak English and they're from the UK. If they decided to never speak English it would be their choice. I think the US does not need an official language. If the we have one, great! But, do not hold it against others if they don't speak English out of choice, ignorance, education, or disability.

My father and grandfather didn't die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours. -Actually they did. We have first amendment rights like the ability to criticise what one sees as wrong because good men like the author's father and grandfather. Denying one the ability to express them selves is one of the most oppressive ways to marginalize people.

I think the police should have every right to shoot your sorry ###### if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word "freeze" or "stop" in English, see the above lines.

-I agree, see the above statements.

I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee s! hop, tri nket store, or any other business.-What? Minorities are the only ones in the service industries, or is it that you think that is the perfect place for them so you too can have minorities serve you, too?

We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations.

-See the line about the first amendment.

Not doing so only shows the bigotry in anthropology, but I think that's the point of this line.

No reason to be against someone because they cannot speak English. However, don't make laws that mandate bi-lingual education or require firefighters, police and teachers in the USA to have to be able to speak Spanish or they cannot get hired.

I know an Egyptian lady who has two sisters with pale skin and blond hair. If they moved to America would they be African Americans? What about Omar Sharif? How about Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig El Abderahman El Mohammed Ahmed El Abdel Karim El Mahdi (the guy who played the doctor on Deep Space 9) and is Sudanese? These people trace their ancestory back to Africa. Oh, and since the Tribe of Joseph was half Egyptian then many people with American Indian ancestory must also be African Americans.

I used to live in Miami, FL. The community was 80% hispanic, and a large % of them are first-generation immigrants, who do not speak English. If you are going to be an emergency services worker, you need to be able to quickly and authoratively communicate with those you will serve. It is legitimate for safety departments to have language requirements in communities where there is a large non-english speaking community.

I call people what they want to be called. "Mormons" are now LDS, Blacks are now "African-Americans." Why is that so hard?

What do most Americans do when they are traveling to a foreign country?

#1: Get permission to enter the country legally.

#2: Buy a foreign language translation dictionary. Take a foreign language class at the community college. Or buy a foreign language instruction package at the book store (or online).

#3: Obtain a guideline of the laws for the country where they will be traveling.

#4: Study the currency exchange values and be prepared to pay for their expenses.

#5: Be prepared to eat foreign food and do not expect an American Grocery Market on every corner.

#6: Respect the foreign government policies and when you have enough politely leave.

We are not asking anyone to do anything that we do not expect of ourselves.

What do most Americans do when they are traveling to a foreign country?

#1: Get permission to enter the country legally.

This is the crux of the current controversy, and I do not disagree. But, do understand the lure. Our country is rich, offering relatively high paying jobs. Our borders are porous, and we tolerate tens of thousands of illegals in our country annually. Furthermore, just try to get a visa to enter our country legally if you are a semi-literate Mexican with only menial-labor skills. It would probably take in excess of ten years.

#2: Buy a foreign language translation dictionary. Take a foreign language class at the community college. Or buy a foreign language instruction package at the book store (or online).

Most Americans do not do this on tourism trips, because English is an international language. Furthermore, most Americans here have a very low tolerance for broken English. When I was in Korea, people marveled that I could say a sentence. Here, I've seen angry glares when someone spoke heavily accented but grammitically proper English. So, I think you're giving us too much credit, and the immigrants not enough.

#3: Obtain a guideline of the laws for the country where they will be traveling.

Is this a repeat of #1, or do you have some other law in mind?

#4: Study the currency exchange values and be prepared to pay for their expenses.

Again, is there a point here? Are you angry because immigrants take advantage of our social welfare programs?

#5: Be prepared to eat foreign food and do not expect an American Grocery Market on every corner.

Actually, a lot of American tourists do expect this. Furthermore, I'm not aware of Mexicans getting angry that there are no Mexican grocers or restaraunts around. Doe it offend you when they are?

#6: Respect the foreign government policies and when you have enough politely leave.

Is this another repeat of #1?

We are not asking anyone to do anything that we do not expect of ourselves.

What is it that most bugs you about illegal immigrants? Is it simply the fact that they are here illegally? Or is it that they dare to bring some of the culture with them?

Why is is always only the liberals on the SCOTUS, that get attacked for judicial activism? The conservatives on the SCOTUS are also guilty of their own version of judicial jujitsu.

Lest we not forget that that two of the most liberal judges where put on the bench by Republicans.

prisonchaplain: In the area where I live, we are very active in the student exchange programs with other countries, both high school and college levels. We also have a large number of business people who travel globally and also receive a number of foreign business people who work on projects within those businesses.

There are also many people here who have elected to adopt children from foreign countries. We have a very high demand for foreign language programs in our schools and colleges. Those adopted children are brought into homes prepared to communicate with them in their language and provide a cultural environment.

Taking responsibility for your family and working through 10 years to get visa is far less than dying in the fuel chamber of a gasoline truck.

Some Americans have struggled through 20 years of frustration to get a visa to enter Vietnam because their loved ones never returned.

Tourism and immigration are not the only issues of foreign policy.

Oh come on now, give me some examples! Let's look how liberals twist things.

In the 1920s Americans made laws to curtail birth control (mostly a Protestant effort). These laws were called the Comstock Laws. In the 1960s many states still enforced laws against the distribution of birth control. I believe Massachusettes was taken to court by those hoping that these laws could be struck down on judicial grounds. According to the 10th. Amendment rights and laws not covered by the US Constitution are left to the sates to create or interpret. This meant that since the constitution did not deal with birth control laws the Comstock laws should have been dealt with by the people of Massachusettes if they wanted a change.

Not so. Liberals on the Warren Court CREATED a right known as the "right to privacy" and then applied it to reproductive concerns. Later the liberals on the court (plus a couple of Nixon appointments) extended the RtoP concept to allow abortion on demand. Recently the same law was used against Texas (and presumably applies to all other states) to prevent states from having laws against sodomy (homosexuality).

Please, give me an example of conservatives using the court like this to promote laws NOT supported by the original intent of the US Constitution.

What do most Americans do when they are traveling to a foreign country?

#1: Get permission to enter the country legally. -Sometimes, I know plenty of American in Japan an South Korea who are there illegally.

#2: Buy a foreign language translation dictionary. Take a foreign language class at the community college. Or buy a foreign language instruction package at the book store (or online). -Not so, Most Americans complain like mad when Koreans do not speak English (including many LDS). I have complaints against quaint Koreans and their refusal to learn English and this from people who are their visiting. I was on a trip to England and took a weekend off to travel in France and heard these same complaints. No, American are the most arrogant of people when it comes to visiting other nations.

#3: Obtain a guideline of the laws for the country where they will be traveling. -Never. American are constantly calling the Embassy when they are found in violation of local laws when those laws do reflect more enlightened American Laws. Look at that kid who got caned in Singapore. The whole country was in an uproar about it, but truth be told, that brat got what he deserved because he violated their laws.

#4: Study the currency exchange values and be prepared to pay for their expenses. -I think this would be a good idea, but most of the time American try to us American dollars instead of the local currency. I have had to help save face for visiting AMEX execs who refused to exchange their money, but became upset when the restaurant or business did no accept American Dollars.

#5: Be prepared to eat foreign food and do not expect an American Grocery Market on every corner. -What ever. When one goes to any great culinary nation, American prefer the McDonalds or KFC. I always show people in Korea where to find American goods and grocery stores because they won't try Korean equivalents (PC, did you ever shop at your friendly neighborhood mijae when you were in Korea?).

#6: Respect the foreign government policies and when you have enough politely leave. -Not with Americans. Do you know why Graham Greene titled his book the quiet American? Because, the only quiet American was a dead one in his opinion. For the most part, American are noisy, obnoxious, and rude coming, going, or staying. When Koreans ask me where I am from, they are usually shocked thinking I'm from England or something because I try to be as understated and quiet while I am overseas (but then they ask if I'm CIA because I speak Korean semi-fluently).

We are not asking anyone to do anything that we do not expect of ourselves.

Keep in mind, some American do fine and are not bad when they visit another nation, but for the most part we are the worst tourists in the world (after us would be South Koreans and then Germans). One of the things that Americans need to do is learn about the rest of the world before we go out into it. Not only are we ignorant of geography, but we are ignorant of international courtesy and deportment.

You think American are some type of paragon, boy are you wrong.
