Palerider Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 Thugs play each Saturday in College football and do dirty things during the game. Wondering if because it's BYU is that the reason for the publicity about this. Quote
priesthoodpower Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) yup, the world expects better from "mormons", I do to. smh..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXS71_qliKo Edited September 15, 2015 by priesthoodpower Quote
pam Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 The term all started when a Nebraska radio host called BYU players thug Mormons. Quote

NeuroTypical Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 Yep - getting offended by memes is a choice. Our church actually bought advertising space in Parker/Stone's BoM Musical. It's ok to giggle at this harmless bit of lighthearted fluff. "Trending Social Media" is the new tracting. Quote
Guest MormonGator Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 I love it. It is very funny. Not sure why it is in bad taste. Same here. I thought it was funny. We don't want to lose our senses of humor-it would turn people off to our church. Quote
Palerider Posted September 16, 2015 Report Posted September 16, 2015 Those Nebraska folks had a Thug Coach for the past few seasons ....... Quote
Blackmarch Posted September 23, 2015 Report Posted September 23, 2015 (edited) I think it is funny too, but it is not something I would support. The contexts for concepts like thugs and mafia and gangsters are not Christ promoting, and would be an image i would try to seperate from christ rather than bind to him.A brass knuckle with the CTR being worn on the right hand of a brawler is in some aspects funny (mostly from the irony)- but the implied violence is not, nor does it send the gospel message. Well, sort of. #thugmormon memes send an ironic opposite of what we really stand for, thus communicating what we do stand for. It demands some assumed knowledge from the viewer of the meme to 'get it', and when a viewer doesn't get it, they're more likely to go look us up then they would be otherwise. It's how some folks communicate on the interwebs these days. It's different than using English words to talk out loud. Just be ready to field the question from someone who saw the meme and wants to know if we're actually thugs or not. That's what a missionary opportunity looks like, and here one is, dropped in your lap by people passing around these memes. Edited September 23, 2015 by NeuroTypical Blackmarch 1 Quote
