[New Coke] was sugary sweet... Way too sweet.  Sweeter than Pepsi, if you can imagine that.

Sounds like someone screwed up a big batch and they had to do a quick re-brand. LOL

Pepsi did a marketing campaign where they had people do a blind "sip test" of Pepsi and Coke. And Pepsi consistently won. So Coke responded by tweaking their recipe to win the sip test. In other words, New Coke was optimized for maximum enjoyment in a single sip. Of course it would be extremely sweet. And of course no one would want to finish a whole can. They could probably re-release it in a smaller can and it would be successful - or maybe just have it in shot-size.

I remember the cola wars.  It ushered in a new era of mainstream negative marketing where one company can toss witty zingers at another company.  I know such things happened before the wars, but from my perspective the Coke/Pepsi campaigns unleashed the floodgates of funny, ironic, sarcastic, satirical, and sometimes downright mean commercials.  I loved 90% of them.

I think I kept my copy of the WallStreet Journal where Apple took out a full two-page ad when Microsoft released Windows 95.  You opened up the newspaper and there, spread across both pages, was one word:

cngrtlns.w95

A tiny apple logo was at the bottom of the page.  Apple was making fun of the old DOS file name limitation of 8 characters, then a dot, then three characters.  Apple had an advantage in file naming for years, and Microsoft had finally closed the gap with Windows 95.

I don't remember Orbitz, but I do remember Tab.  Is that still a thing?  What about Sunkist orange soda?

Actually, yes, Tab is still a thing.  I've seen it for sale at my local grocer.

They have Sunkist orange on tap at the local convenience stores in my area.

I'm not a Coke fan but I do like the Coke that comes in a bottle from Mexico.  The coke made in Mexico for the U.S. is made from sugar cane instead of high fructose syrup.  Now don't think if you go to Mexico it's all that way...mainly just the ones the send to the US.
