I found this cool manual for studying the Book of Mormon. It is available on line. Called a Book of Mormon seminary manual. Not sure what seminary is, maybe a course for high school students? Anyway, it has questions that guide you through the material. Very useful, fun and written in a gentle manner. Quite chummy going through this with little exercises to write out. Almost like having a friend to go through the scriptures with! It is dark here very early because I am so far north and I am getting maudlin!

In the non LDS world, a seminary is a college that trains students for a theological career. I was very, very close to going to Gordon-Cromwell Theological Seminary after I graduated from college. I think it means something different in the LDS world. Not pejorative, just mentioning that there is a  difference.

Oh, so you were on the road to perfection before we got hold of you! I have found members of the ministry to be among the nicest people to ever walk the earth.

That's why I'd never make it as a minster. Too mean.

Yes, seminary is a class for high school students.  In Utah, there are seminary buildings and kids can take it during one of the class periods (they leave school, go across the street, or next door, attend seminary, then return to school for the next class).  In lower-density-Zion, students attend early-morning seminary, which was once per week when I was in high school*.  I attended at the seminary teacher's house.  Apparently in some areas these days, students attend at the church.  I don't know if they do every-day early-morning seminary these days or if it's still once / week.

In the same area where you found seminary manuals, you should also find institute manuals.  This is the same thing, only for college students (and, I think, a wider range of courses).

Enjoy or download them while you can, the Church is revamping seminary (and has revamped institute since I was in college*), so the manuals may change.  While I'm sure the new manuals are better for the current goals of the courses, the old manuals also have useful stuff in them.

*I'm sure askandanswer would just love to know when that was... :P

(That's me paraphrasing, cuz I can't remember for sure who taught it this way - a BYU professor I had back in the stone age, I think.)

This is the second time in less than two weeks that you have attempted to create the impression that some time in the distant past, you have had some of exposure to formal education. Give it up Zil, no one is ever likely to believe you, there is too much evidence to the contrary. For a start, if you had ever had any sort of contact with formal education, that would instantly disqualify you for membership in Gators' harem.

My guess is that if you had ever had any contact with formal education processes, this probably would have taken place somewhere around 1967 - 1970? Or, more realistically, perhaps some time between 12:00 pm March 28, 1968, all the way through until 12:01 pm March 28, 1968?

That's funny seeing how Gator and I met in college ?

Perhaps that explains why he doesn't want any more educated women in his harem.

Hey pal, we prefer the term "compound".

Posted

It looks like Elder Cook prefers that term as well. From his Sunday afternoon session conference talk last October

https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2016/10/serve?lang=eng

I remember the rush of adrenaline when we got bogged down in the mud or tried to climb a steep hill: Uncle Lyman would yell, “Put ’er in (the) compound, Dorothy Zil!”
