Checkbook? what's that? does anyone use checks anymore? I'm half serious - I definitely agree with the core concept of financial basics in whatever form that takes.

For the personal finance merit badge, I had to keep a budget for I think 3 weeks or something. Day 1 I wrote down what I had, which was only $20. from day 2-14 it stayed at $20 (And yes, I kept a daily note of this). on the 15th, it went to $0 and stayed there till the end of the 3 week period. I then got my merit badge x) Needless to say I didn't learn to budget correctly until I first ran out of my missionary fund on my mission and was forced to eat frozen vegetable bought by some Elder probably years earlier.

My wife and I now do a pretty good job of keeping a budget :)

Yeah, we teach her that one. I'm big on my kids knowing their rights.

I ask about the self-defense because we're mulling over preschools right now and 99% sure it will be one of the two down the street. One is a Montessori preschool, the other is this arts academy that includes the various arts options in their preschool program, including three different kinds of martial arts. I can't tell you the three right now, but if we go to that school...

Unless the Montessori is a dump, or a Montessori-in-name-only, I am all thumbs up for picking the Montessori over the arts academy.

Montessori is awesome!  My daughter went there and came out of preschool with a second grade reading level!

She had summer camp there and just loved it.

Go for it!  My kid went to a Montessori all the way through 5th grade and it was the perfect school for him.  He opted for the science and technology traditional junior high so that's the only reason we left the Montessori school.
