Elphaba Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 I helped lds.net concept this site. What do you guys think? I'd love to hear your comments. Add me as a friend too.Best Wishes, RustySince you asked . . I have only one significant complaint, and I'm not sure you were involved in this part of the design, but here goes.I believe the posting windows are far too wide. It makes posts, especially those that are wordy, very difficult to read. My career used to be in publishing and one of my top priorities in my designs was readability. When the width of a column is as long as it is on this window, it is very difficult to read. This is not a reflection on the reader. It is just how the brain works. It is almost impossible for the reader to keep the first part of the sentence in the mind by the time they get to the end of the sentence. This is why every print publication you see usually uses columns, but if not, it still will rarely use a column wider than 3 inches. Anyway, is there any way you can shorten the window's width a bit? I didn't notice this problem at TALK.Other than that, I am having a great time learning all the waddgiwidgets, and think the site has a great design. Elphaba Quote
john doe Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 I don't know if I'm agreeing with Elphaba, mainly because I don't understand what she was talking about, but it is very cold outside. My thought is that there is a lot of wasted space in this layout. On my IE browser, I have 1-1/2 to 2 inches of wasted space on each side of the message area where there is absolutely nothing. Maybe I just don't know how to set up my viewing area, but I would prefer to see the whole screen set up with information, not just the middle of it. Quote
NateHowe Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 It seems like the idea they are presenting is to go float rather than fixed on the forum width. Perhaps they could place a small toggle button somewhere in a similar manner to the Wordpress theme I used for Why am I a Mormon? (see the top right corner, near the color buttons).Really like the concept, though - the integration of the various site portions is very nice. I am not usually a fan of horizontal nav bars, but this works well for the content involved. I don't know how much of the actual design you did, but it is quite well done, and it's a big improvement over the former forums. Thank you. Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Maybe I'm an exception to the rule because I find it more difficult to read narrow columns because the sentences seem to be too disjointed. This is a nice width for me and is the same as every other forum where I am a member. There's one small problem I do find here, and the word 'small' is the clue. The default font size seems very small when typing a reply and I find it hard to read. Is there any way that can be set to a larger size? I don't mean the resulting size which appears once posted, which I know can be altered by using the drop down size menu. I'm referring to what actually appears in the text box as I type. Quote
Dr T Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 The way my view is set up, the column is small with a lot of white space in "the margin" Quote
Heather Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 I can look into having it float. I made it fixed to fit the navigation design I did, but I could play around with that and at least make it so the content of the pages float. I designed the site, based a little bit on a template I thought would work really well with all the features I wanted, although I ended up changing that template considerably. Quote

WANDERER Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 · Hidden Hidden Yep I'll second that, great work. Looking for the button on the new post page that allows you to decide how far you want to read back in posts "today, this week"...The other thread tool I'd like to see is a subscribe one...just so you don't have to track it down.
Heather Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 Wanderer, at the top of this page you should see LinkBack Thread Tools Search this Thread Rate Thread Display Modes Under Thread Tools, you should have the link to subscribe to the thread. Quote

kona0197 Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 I don't like this new site. There are too many things going on at once. Very confusing. The layout is horrible. Last but not least no one asked us members if we wanted a change. It was forced upon us. Nice way to take peoples thoughts into consideration... Quote
WANDERER Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 · Hidden Hidden Thankyou Heather for the trackback help (I'm used to a different forum system and I'll have to play around with it a bit). I tend to float on the newposts page and if my connection cuts out or the login times out (I'll have to enable cookies on this site for login I think as much as I avoid it) then all the threads I haven't read disappear. I then have to go into the mainpage and look for threads. So the preferred option would be to be able to change the new posts viewing to todays posts, last 48 hours or this week. It is a useful tool for 'current threads'. If you don't login very often then selecting the week's threads and catching up is great. The main index I tend to use as an archive. I like the whole concept. But then I like the whole feature laden thingy. On some forums they give you the option to scale things down to simple view...just select the skin that you are happiest with - if you want to use the forum on the simplest level right it's there with the click of a button. That makes things accessible for those that want to, but are overwhelmed.
Elphaba Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 So then am I the only person on the site who can type a full line and have literally no white space on either side of that line? Elphaba Quote

Elphaba Perhaps screen resolution or browser type might affect the results you see. For instance, I use 1280 by 1024 due to poor eyesight. Quote
FrankJL Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I have white space on both my 13'' laptop display (set at 1280x800) leaves about 2 inches of space per side, and the 22'' monitor (set at 1680x1050) I use when my laptop is hooked into its docking station, leave about 4 inches of white per side.
