We can't live the law of chastity retroactively can we? Can we go back and live the Word of Wisdom when we have failed to do so? No law can be retroactively obeyed. Tithing is no different.

Just to offer another perspective...a few years back we sold our house, and made $30K. At the time we did not believe we needed to tithe on this increase. However, a couple of years ago I broached the subject with my wife, and said we really should consider tithing on that $30K. She agreed, and we budgeted an extra $250 a month for the year. Maybe we did not have to, but we both felt convicted, and at the end the year, we both felt mightily blessed for having succeeded.

Good post Prison Chap......with the original question...the answer would be no you don't have to.....however....if you felt the way prisonChap just mentioned....see if you can't work something out. As a Bishop I would answer your question with a "no":)

I would discuss it with your bishop. If you were actually inactive (and depending on how long) the answer is probably no, but when my DH and I stopped paying tithing for awhile (while still active) our bishop required us to pay back tithing until it was all caught up. I've heard this is unusual though (and we were working on temple recommends at the time, so our situation may have been different as well).

Hi everyone. I was away from the LDS church for quite some time and so I was not tithing. Must I pay what I did not pay while I was gone or should I just start tithing again now? Thanks.

I would start now for sure. But consider that the Spirit may prompt you as to the missed tithes-one way or the other. I think it would be symbolic of going the extra mile and doing more than was commanded, if you did, however.

It is not where you have been but where you are that matters, and though we cannot make the judgement on retro-tithes, the Bishop can give you GREAT comfort there, I have never seen one have to pay tithing in arears. Unless you saved it up somehow, you'd be paying double as it were. So in my humble opinion you probably will be asked to move ahead as an active saint including tithing on your income. In one Ward in Provo, the FYI - the Bisho got up in tears to clarify the tithing principle because many poor students were adding the value of their Christmas and B-day presents and paying tithing on that. Though you may if you wish that is not the intent of tithting and that is NOT what the Lord expects. Tithing is on your increase which the brethren have clarified means your salary. I am confident that the Lord does not want to be so much of a burden in considering paying back tithing that you fail, and slip again and don't pay tithing at all.

Also - when considering paying tithing on gross or net income - do you want gross blessings or net blessing????? (BTW - we pay on the gross.)

May the Lord bless you,

Abraham
