kona0197 Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 How often do you read your scriptures? What part of them do you read? Quote
checkerboy Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I try to get in daily reading. Sometimes I forget. Right now I am reading the Book of Mormon as that is what we are studying in Sunday School. Quote
Canuck Mormon Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Me and my wife try and read daily, but at least everyother day. We are currently reading the Book of Mormon. How about you kona? Quote
kona0197 Posted April 3, 2008 Author Report Posted April 3, 2008 I'm trying to read the whole Bible for the first time in my life. I'm also reading the teachings of Joseph Smith. Interesting reading. Quote
MorningStar Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 My family is reading a chapter of The Book of Mormon and Old Testament every night. We started just reading the OT, but when it was just talking about the laws, all the things that would get people the death penalty, etc., we decided to add a chapter of the BOM to our routine because it was more uplifting. We're in more positive parts in the OT now and I can't wait to get to Psalms! I love it. Quote
kona0197 Posted April 3, 2008 Author Report Posted April 3, 2008 I forgot to add that sometimes it is hard to read my scriptures. I get to tired or life gets in the way. Or I'm watching too much TV. Quote
Hemidakota Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I'm trying to read the whole Bible for the first time in my life. I'm also reading the teachings of Joseph Smith. Interesting reading.Congrats...my own children struggle through the Old Testament. To make it interesting, grab a study guide or when something catches your curiosity, keep a journal to record your feelings pertaining to that verse. The last twelve minor prophets of the OT is what I find quite fascinating. Quote

MorningStar Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 It's easier if you do it at the same time every day. It becomes a habit. Our stake president said he made morning prayer a habit by doing that as soon as he put his shoes on. Now he finds himself praying every time he puts his shoes on. If there's something that exciting on TV, you could always record it. It's just a matter of priorities. :) Or you could listen to it on CD while you're driving somewhere or at home cooking. My brother-in-law does that. Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I'm reading the Book of Mormon and also the Old Testament, the latter because my daughter is doing seminary and it's the OT year and we've had a bit of a challenge with her not being able to get to the classes so we're studying it together now as an encouragement to her as she was supposed to do Home Study after it was decided I wasn't permitted to teach her. I'm still getting a lot out of it. Quote
MsMagnolia Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I try my best to read daily. I notice an immediate difference when i don't read versus when i do. I am studying the old testament and have started reading "The Articles of Faith" by James Talmage. Haveing a seminary teaching posistion helps me to study because if I don't the teenagers will eat me alive! (not literally of course) I love the Book of mormon and how clearly the doctrine is presented in it. Quote
utcowboy Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I try to read daily but don't always make it. I'm reading the BoM right now, I just finished the D&C.. Quote
skalenfehl Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 I've focused on the Bible and Book of Mormon recently. Quote
Guest tomk Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 How often do you read your scriptures? What part of them do you read? Sometimes I go off on tangents for a few days, but generally each day I take ONE verse from the Book of Mormon and explore all the footnotes and write my feelings on it as well as what I feel from the Lord. Quote
daenvgiell Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 I read the scriptures everyday except for saturday it seems, I get up every morning and do my own study and then I also use my scriptures at church Quote
a-train Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 I just read whatever. It's all too interesting to put down most of the time. -a-train Quote
kona0197 Posted April 4, 2008 Author Report Posted April 4, 2008 OK next question: help me decide when to set aside some time to read my scriptures. I try to read them every time I take a bath. Lately it seems a spirit of sleepiness overcomes me when I want to read. Quote
MorningStar Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 Bath time is the perfect time, but the warm water might be too relaxing for you, causing you to be sleepy. Try adding cold water and some ice cubes. Problem solved! Quote
kona0197 Posted April 4, 2008 Author Report Posted April 4, 2008 Never thought of that. I might turn off the whirlpool too. Quote
MorningStar Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 You have a whirlpool tub? Lucky! Definitely turn off the whirlpool. That's way too relaxing. You should read your scriptures when you're really alert. Try having a friend scare you at random times during the day to get your adrenaline running, then read your scriptures. You'll be all alert. Also, you could read them while riding your bike if you're not picky about watching where you're going. Quote
kona0197 Posted April 4, 2008 Author Report Posted April 4, 2008 Well I also suffer from sleep apnea so I never get enough sleep. Quote
Canuck Mormon Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 If you have an MP3 player, you could get the scriptures downloaded to it and listen to them while you ride your bike, or go for a walk, or whenever. Quote
Guest tomk Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 Well I also suffer from sleep apnea so I never get enough sleep. I wear a mask each night. Sucks, but I get better sleep. Quote
kona0197 Posted April 4, 2008 Author Report Posted April 4, 2008 Yeah I have a machine and a mask that my Mom gave me but I do not have medical insurance nor enough money to get a sleep study done so I don't know what settings I need for the machine. Self diagnosing doesn't work either. Quote
