Quick question. Am i the only one who keeps hearing the song from The King and I when going to this thread?

You would have to ask a Methodist. But many churches (excluding non denominational) don't accept other forms of baptism so the person would most likely have to be baptized into the new church. Becoming a member of another church, would cancel the lds rights (Priesthood, baptism etc.) and is an excommunicateable offense.(not just going but formally joining another church.) However your friend can resign prior to joining another church which means they couldn't excommunicate them. It's really like being fired vs quitting the effects are the same.

suit & tie?
hordak replied to Nenad's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
It is not a rule. It is culture. My mother was a member for 30 some years and wore a skirt maybe once every 3 months. She went to worship God, not to fit in. I'm not saying those who dress up aren't worshiping, but for her it was more important to be comfortable and focus on the message then to spend the day worrying about her clothes. Same reason i don't wear a white shirt or tie. I can spend the sacrament meeting trying not to choke on my tie and fighting to keep the kids "snack hands", and crayons off my clean white shirt. Or i can focus on the talks. -
Does Salt Lake City have its share of worldliness?
hordak replied to chitchat's topic in General Discussion
I'm with wingnut. There are many things that demonstrate "worldly". in 2006 Salt lake city had twice the rape rate and theft rate as Miami (a city most would call worldy) even Provo trumped Miami rape rate. Crime Rate Comparison: Provo Vs. Miami I've lived all around the county and actually felt most safe, and had the least "worldly" experiences in a metro of 4 million people with plenty of Strip clubs, bars etc. My most crazy run ins have occurred in tiny little cities. If you move to Utah go for the skiing. Not to get away from the world. -
I don't think taking them out would be an indication that the country (which is made up of Christians, Buddhist,Muslims,Wiccans, Atheist, etc) does not believe in God. Since we are no a theocracy you can't say one way or another as the USA is made up of millions of individuals with differing views. Saying the USA believes in God is like saying the USA likes Cheese. It is true for some, not for others and doesn't define such a vast and complex nation with such a broad range of individuals. However if an attempt was made to remove it there would be more irate Christians who would raise a stink then the few petty Atheist who have raised a stink to remove it.

You know it's just "transference". I do not know the proper psychological term but i got a birthday coming up and realize i'm getting older, so it's nice to know there are others further along then me. I know it is selfish but i can't afford the sports car

I was just going to tell her she was old. Nice subtle approach

I understand what you are saying but because they may have shared they "ideals" doesn't mean they expected, wanted or would support the specific application. Saying the application of in God we trust, on our money and under God in our pledge, hundreds of years latter, comes from the founding fathers ideals and therefor comes from them themselves is the equivalent to saying Brittany Spears dancing in her underwear on tv or hearing every curse word but the F and S words on public tv comes from them because they supported free speech. Adding God officially to our government (in these cases) came about from religious fever during the Civil war and is not a reflection of the wishes of the founding fathers, who did not see the need to print these phrases on money when they themselves had the opportunity to.
-
The problem with it is people think it is from our "founding fathers. It is not. I could care less either way but it gives people the illusion that it is from "the founding fathers". The county was not founded in the 1950s and if the founding fathers were so adamant on being a "nation under God" it would have came up in the 165 years we had been a nation before hand. Same thing with the money, God was added to the Coins 88 years after we declared independence, paper bills 181 years later, or 1 year after it became our official motto in 1956. I could take or leave it but would love if history classes would at least explain the history behind it.That it has nothing to do with our founding father beliefs.

They were made for men. The just don't look as good:D

As i guy i know nothing of fashion, but even i know that looks absurd. On a side note the "revolving" fashion trends bother me because i missed it. As a child i was poor so i wore holey jeans, faded pants, worn out teeshirts, because we couldn't afford new cloths and i was ridiculed for it. Now i go to the store and people are paying $60 for these torn up clothes:rolleyes:

I don't mean to be the "bearer of bad news" but do you have specific office skills? (E.G. Billing and coding, altus, legal research and writing, blue book citation. etc. ) Everyone who graduated from high school since the late 90s has computer skills, if you're referring to word, excel, powerpoint etc. You need something that distinguishes you from the rest. Perhaps it is time to look into an education for an office type job?

Are you worthy? A Campaign against LDS Women
hordak replied to SeattleTruthSeeker's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I have never thought of the Priesthood as something that raises men up over women but as something that raises them up . Looking at the Proclamation on Family men are to be the bread winners and mothers the teachers and nurtures.(except in certain circumstance). Generally speaking that nurture/teacher quality is ingrained in women. It's biological and a women can't be a good mother(teacher/ nurture) and be a bad person IMO. Men on the other hand are taught to provide, and protect really without a set of rules. You can be a great provider / protector and still be a horrible person. ("Look honey, we have the money to send Jr to that private school" All i had to to was manipulate some stocks and ruin peoples retirement plans." The Priesthood keeps men in check, in a sense. It says be a good provider, be a good protector, but be Christ like as you do. -
First there is only one true sport Hockey. Hockey speaks to our primal instincts. As the old adage goes I went to a fight and a Hockey game broke out. I agree that players get over payed, but since I love free markets i'm cool with that. I also think people can get too caught up. People who don't know who's on their city council, or kids school board can name the starting roster of their favorite team.

nope but i love Alba an Aigh

Sad thing is you would think someone old enough to spell with it would be old enough to know better then to play with it

There you go, Volunteer for some crappy station;).You could join Scientology. Seriously though i'm sorry to hear what your going through. I can imagine making such a big change without discussing it with my wife. And there isn't much you can do from your end except maybe have the 1st shirt drop by. All i can say is good luck, and i hope the change isn't too drastic.

I think it's time for you to get that motorcycle, or fishing boat, you have always wanted. Ok it is a little petty but perhaps she doesn't understand what it is like to be left out of such a big decision. Are you active duty or reserve/ guard? If you're active duty perhaps the ward your wife is attending is "Military ward" (mostly made up of military members) and you can write or call the Bishop and explain your concerns. If he served he might be sympathetic to your situation and slow things down a bit. Also does she have good Non LDS circle of friends she can hang out with? Perhaps you can encourge them to spend more time with her. (Not that hanging out with the members is bad but if that is her only social circle it could be pushing her to jump the gun)

I wouldn't jump to the assumption that his questions and doubts are a way to legitimize his choices. It's a way to shut down dialog, and therefor ineffective. If you want to help your friend you must understand why. As someone who has been back and forth i can tell you i wouldn't give up eternal life to break the WoW. I would break the WoW because i didn't believe in it. So if you would have come at me and said "You left the church so you could sin" i would laugh because you were wrong.. It appears they your friends issues are with the church itself, and not Christianity as a whole so i would answer his questions using NON LDS sources ,because LDS source would be pointless to one who doesn't believe in them.

Actually he did say it would be easy.

That was a cool flick
