Used to have a African Spurred Tortoise, but had to get ride of him for a move:sadwalk: Looking back it was probably a good thing, he might have been a bit expensive to feed as an adult.

I don't know. Obesity is the fasting growing cause of preventable death (our schools spend time, teaching about the dangers of drugs and stds which are a drop in the bucket) We have regulated the crap out of the tobacco industry, doubling the price of a pack of smokes which goes to taxes, higher regulation on sales, advertising etc. And it has worked. Smoking related deaths have stayed the same and/or (depending on year) slightly declined (last i checked) while this obesity issue has grown to number 1 (iirc) for the world and number 2 for the states. One thing i do want to say is I told you so. I remember saying the same things vahnin is saying when the came after "big" tobacco but most didn't seem to care. The door has been opened. I suspect if the purpose is to overcome the problem this sort of control can be as effective as the anti tobacco legislation/ regulations. But for the price of freedom is it worth it?

Circumstances are a condition of free will. Often we think we are in this bubble, x happened what did i do wrong or right?, but we forget that others free will affects us, and ours affects others as well .

I would say for many people it is. Many are "motivated by a desire to get something for nothing" And while you "own" a part of the co it's value is as much as a casino chip. It's only worth something to the other gamblers. It's not like you can jump out of line and go make your own bigmac saying "Its ok people, i own this place. I'm a stock holder" Unless you spent a lot of money, own a lot of their stock, which might give you some say, much like owning a lot of casino stock (chips) will give you comped rooms, shows, drinks etc.) It can be safer, It doesn't carry the negative social stigma. But ultamently you're putting your money on the line in order to make more by outdoing the competition because it is easier "real work" I don't think there is anything wrong with it, nor do i see anything wrong with regular gambling (unless you are addicted).

That's another good point. Most people think "we have to check out the parents," but they don't start out as dirty 40 year old men. I have a lady down the street who is very nice i trust her, and she has offed to watch the kids but she has an older son who loves babies a bit to much for a 10 year old boy IMO so i never have and will not be taking her up on that offer. I could be wrong and it could be my loss but i like to err on the side of caution when it comes to my kids.

I would say there is a correlation but think is stems more from the loneliness factor then virginity ( since sex is so common virgins are more likely to have had less long intimate (not sexual but close) relationships. (not saying they can't exist without sex though). After my father lost my mother he started to date some real riff raff. A younger girl with a kid and a baby daddy (not ex hubby) who he would shuttle around in his car,(the girl not the baby daddy) and is still paying a rent to own center for a computer he bought her that "was stolen". Problem was he was/is lonely. The desire to have a partner, while not as essential as eating or breathing) is as hardwired into us. The longer one goes not meeting this "need" ( or in this case losings it after having it so long) the less picky one becomes. I had to sit him down and explain the dating world has changed since bell bottoms, leisure suits, and light up disco floors:D

Do not fall into this LDS=good, line of thinking. Religions affiliation is not an indication of ones trustworthiness particularly on this issue (Look at GA George P Lee). In fact the fact this was brought up by your Bishop in your ward wouldn't surprise me if a member was having a problem, maybe not full fledged yet, so your bishop chose to address the members as a whole rather then say, Stay away from Brother Smith. In the same way that as pornography has become a bigger problem for the member the church has addressed it more and more.

Just to add President Hunter was called as Prophet for 9 months. The amount of time spend serving doesn't diminish the service.

I go to a military ward. I would estimate 95% of the members are active duty, families, Our membership changes every year. Our Bishop is retired (so he stays put) but every other calling is filled by someone who will frequently leave, for 6 months to a year at a time, or for good. (other wards in the are have had active duty Bishops). While Bishop could be seen as a more "important" calling, all are supposed to come from the same place, And no one has be counseled to leave their career when orders come down.

Even having been through these things myself i don't have the words. Just know that here at LDS.net our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family,To those whom BrotherBear left behind with the sincere hope that they will find the comfort they need at this time.

really? I've heard it plenty (though it comes from some of the more "Pharisaical" members who also stand against drinking caffeine, having long hair, etc. etc.

Yep the lord would never serve alcohol . I know what you mean. But personally (don't know if it changed) but i never made a covenant to avoid things against the WoW. I made a covenant to not partake of them myself. Violation of the WoW by non members hurts them as much as violation of the temple covenants hurts non temple members. Love this quote though

BTW whens kickoff and what networks carrying it? (this is the only game i watch) I love the commercials:D

Depends on how You keep the sabbath day holy. If you normally, wouldn't visit friends or watch tv (because you view it as a violation any other day) then this would fall into that category. I myself grew up in a family where keeping the sabbath day holy was about spending time together not a list of do nots and have kept this tradition. So i will be watching it, but i was watching tv last Sunday, and i''ll watch it next (until this stupid snow melts and we can get out)

Problem with this is we are a convert church. If we were like the (Amish 99% or the members were born in) it would make sense. But looking at it like is to say Joseph, prophet of the Restoration, the man who saw angels, translated the BoM, the papyri, who received the revelation and saw God and Jesus in person wouldn't be able to give this stuff up. Potential convert Bob, is (Not just him obviously but Tobacco has become more addictive, Coffee, a horrible tasting drink in the 1800s is now made with all sorts of great tasting spices, creams and syrups (ala starbucks). Alcohol comes in better tasting forms as well. There is no reason to think it would be harder for member x in 1880 to give up bitter black coffee, then for member y in 2009 to give up sweet tasting double mocha frapachinoes.

The idea that God knows the future (our exact actions)borders on Predestination /Calvinism (imo) so i don't think so. God knows, jenny will be raised by a crack addicted mother, turn tricks herself to make money, Get a brief glimps of his love but fall away and deny the holy spirit, the unpardonable sin. Would he be Just if he knew this would pass yet still formed her and sent her through the trial knowing she would fail? Would it be just to grant someone children (assuming he controls that) If he knew without a doubt that the family would not make it and have to live in separate kingdoms? If we fail of our own accord it's understandable. If he knows the outcome, it doesn't interfere with free will. But if he knows the outcome it is not just, (or even have a purpose) to give the test. Particularly to those who will fail. If he know spirit x will fail (big time) I.E. Outer darkness (and i think oblivion) then the Just thing would be to not make spirit x in the first place.

So often on this board a question is asked or a situation is brought up and there are 2 opinions. These opinions are shared by many of the posters and we "gather into camps" trying to prove our opinion is superior to the opposition, by thanking those we agree with and reiterating the point. Very seldom does someone change their thinking or even acknowledge there may be merit to the opposing side and threads seem to go until one of the mods put the smackdown and stop it or it peters out and we find a more interesting cause to support or oppose. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, without opposing opinions message boards wouldn't exist and we would have to find something more productive to do with our time: But i make this thread to go against the status quo.(and perhaps allow others the same opportunity.) Today i went to the local drive thru to pick up a quick easy supper. When giving my my order, we are in the middle of a blizzard, i noticed some snow had fallen into the car. When i went to pay the same thing happened. Finally when i went to pick up the food a huge chunk of snow fell in covering my leg, seat, and filling my pull cup and the recessed power window switches. My car was covered in the drive thru. So i swallow my pride and say Wingnut (I'm pretty sure it was you) There my be something to your "Clean the snow of the roof" thing after all. Your side has merit.:)

That is precisely why i am NOT a donor. I just thought i was paranoid.

Infant mortality rates are higher for males then females. The rise and fall of excess male infant mortality I'm no mathematician (where is MOE when you need him) but the number of people who died before 8 will far outnumber the number of members of the church (total). Since the men die at a higher rate i would say not only will men will outnumber women but Non Mormons will outnumber Mormons. Plus women’s relationships are based more on social structures, and women might appear more active at church. There are also more social activities for women than there are for men. Activity doesn’t necessarily equal righteousness.

The military has the policy not the church, follow the regs. I've seen lds give invocations at functions and end the a simple Amen.
