  1. Beside the the fact that caffeine rated r movies are not laws (as pointed out by others ) I have always thought "Higher laws" are the more vague while the strict ones were "lesser". Thou shalt not commit murder is pretty straight forward, black and white. It doesn't require study, a lot of thought, personal revelation etc. It is the equivalent of saying "Don't touch the stove" to a 5 year old. When the people get "spiritually older" they are given a "higher law" Love thy enemy, love they neighbor, hate in the heart is murder. This takes much thought, study and revelation. What is hate? Where do we draw the line between love and acceptance? etc. etc. This is like telling a 12 year old they can cook themselves lunch but must be careful. The need to think about what is careful. How to use knifes, and the stove in a safe manor. This also show a level of trust in the child.
  2. I grew up in the action hero days. Arnold, Sly, Van Damn, Segal etc etc and was never shielded from this violence. I love horror film and Slasher film, I play games so violent they make halo look like Mario cart. Yet to this day when i see actual (real life) violence, blood and guts i am disgusted. My wife on the other hand, who doesn't like those sorts of things, can work on a moped vs car head on victim weeks after buying her husband a motorcycle, treat a fatal gun shot wound, bring a child , the same age as her own, back to life and talk about it over dinner the same way another person would discuss the weather. It is her job. She is desensitized So based on my personal experiences i can say violence has not desensitized me , I can tell the difference between real and make believe. My wife, who deals with the real thing is desensitized. And neither of us are more violent ourselves because of exposure. But as a parent i say listen to your parents. A wise women once told me "When your 18 you can do what you want, until then i make the rules" Hordaks Mom
  3. Nyal this is the most interesting (i.e non typical) polygamy question i have ever heard but i think it may belong in the open forum section. Befor the speculation gets to graphic.
  4. If someone were to break into my home, or come by the back yard with bad intent while the kids are out playing this http://thm-a01.yimg.com/nimage/66fc77e82a58b45e tends to get the point (stay away) across better then this Though i must admit i do like the independence of cat (being able to go away for a few days)
  5. Because, since it started as a penal colony we suspect the majority of Aussies are the descendants of criminals;) J/K
  6. I just realized mirancs8 and RachelleDrew touched upon the problem. I don't know the science that goes into catching a rapist (aside from what i learned watching CSI ) but in either event i think if the law requires rape, then some women will "give them rape", if the law require proof of rape you risk forcing the women who are too scared to come forward , to carry the babies to term. If the rape kit is done within 72 hours there would be a need for an abortion and they could just take Plan B.
  7. only to those who live that culture. The culture is meant to "enforce" or make the doctrine easier to live. Ex. Law of chastity is Doctrine Don't date before 16, group dates, dancing a "book of Mormon apart" (do they still do that?) Is culture meant to reinforce the doctrine. Many times people confuse the 2 and if they live the culture like doctrine they will teach it as such. But going on a date a 15 is not a violation of doctrine.
  8. You know i read somewhere that many rapes go un prosecuted due to the lack of evidence. After going through such a traumatic and defiling experience many women go straight to the shower washing away evidence. Make the law too stringent and you would defeat the purpose by making rape victims carry the babies to term. Catch 22
  9. 80 men and women lost an average of 2.78 lbs in 8 weeks. Rounding it up to 3 lbs and assuming best case senerio all 3lbs were fat 3500kcals x 3 =10500 kcals total 10500/ 8 weeks =1312.5 kcals a week 1312.5kcal/7 days = 187.5 kcals that is 2 tablespoons of peanut butter a day, or about 16 ounces of pop. So you can spend $80-$110 on special shoes, or drink a water instead of pop.
  10. I would fear an increase in "rapes" (AKA allegations )to receive access to the procedure.
  11. Don't you ever speak ill of Florida:mad:. Texting while driving posses an immediate threat to other drivers. I would imagine they addressed that and not the burrito thing based on the recent popularity of texting. Besides People have had years to perfect the eating;)
  12. Haha. My favorite, when i was living there was that lady, with NO kids, who wanted to outlaw spanking
  13. My views on modesty couldn't be any different then the typical member if i owned Victoria Secret, But on this i actually agree. The first dress doesn't "bother me" due to the exposed shoulder. But because it looks like Tarzan meets hefty bag. Ooooooohhhhh ohohohoooooooo
  14. Kinda. It isn't that it doesn't make a difference but that it is not a cause and effect (karma) type thing. When potty training my oldest i tried to "bribe" her (what is the difference between a bribe and reward anyway?) by giving her M&Ms or stickers when she went potty in the potty, but she got nothing for accidents. Everything was going good for a while until the accidents became more and more frequent and i asked "What's going on" to which she replied "You didn't give me candy yesterday" Turns out she didn't have a "change of heart" so to speak. She wasn't "following the gospel" of potty training because she wanted to be a big girl but because she wanted the instant reward. Eventually she got it and got the reward of being a big girl, having that confidence and pride that goes along with it and some external reward (underwear) but that the external pales in comparison to the internal. I believe the gospel is similar. God doesn't reward us with, fancy cars, no flats, pay raises, which i believe if you look at the stats religions affiliation would have little to do with. But with the internal. The pride of knowing you are doing the right thing, setting a good example etc. And while some days it may not feel like it that is worth way more then the corner office, the home on the hill. Occasionally we may be rewarded with "big boy/girl" underwear but it's the big boy big girl status that is the real reward.
  15. What did Jesus teach? Teaches you to weather it better But doesn't seem to make a difference. Besides the obvious problems of thinking "what do i get out of it" You run the risk of thinking "so and so is having a hard time, they must not be righteous enough "
  16. Someone doesn't know history:)
  17. Do not confuse the gospel with patriotism or patriotism with conservatism..
  18. I plan to get them the cell phones with the built in tracker when mine are that age.
  19. does raw cookie dough count;)
  20. Church or no marrying someone based on conditions is no good.
  21. I had to laugh because i yell that at the tv each week.
  22. iirc A few states have or tried to pass it (LA and CA). I would like to see your source for cigarette induced car crashes? i can tell it's much more distracting (for the 3 sec. it takes) to look for the right preset button on the radio then to light a smoke while looking ahead at the road. More kids will die from from bad eating an exercise habits then second hand smoke If we really want to protect the kids we will outlaw parents feeding their kids fast food. Make exercise mandatory, ban ronald mcdonald etc. etc.
  23. 27 And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength.
  24. So glad Cirie is gone:dude:
  25. I should note i'm not saying people should use the higher standards as an excuse not to go. I agree that the "Lord expects every young man to make himself worthy and able to serve a mission with the newer standards, not fall below them because they're no longer the status quo." But i believe on such a personal life changing task (like kids, marriage, career etc) he will ask/confirm it to you personally. You might discuss children with the Bishop but you don't have them based on his recommendation and the fact that's the way every other young married couple is doing it. I think when we (particularly those of us not in a Priesthood position of authority over said individual, I.E. Bishop) say "Brother Jones, your old enough, you need to turn in your mission papers in" Are as out of place as the well meaning but nosy sister (every ward has one)who ask "Sister Smith, your 24 when are going to get married? or "Sister Doe, you've been married 3 years, when are you going to have a baby? Do you have problem?" and risk turning a calling to aspire to (i want to serve a mission for the lord) into a policy (i'm old enough, guss it's time to serve a mission)
