  1. Can you determine a persons sexual attraction before they have a sexual attraction? I mean i often hear about how "they knew or their parents knew they were gay at the age of 6" but how you determine that when sexual attraction is not known to a 6 year old? You cannot tell i'm straight based on my love of football (which is the most over rated sport known to man) but based on my sexual attraction to women. At six, women were people with long hair who had babies to me. The only way you could "determine" sexual attraction for someone without it would be to base it on our society gender stereotypes, which is how and why gay people are mocked and teased so therefor people doing this are actually giving more ammo to the bullies. Kids on the playgrounds are saying "Your gay, that makes a a little sissy" Adults "That's not nice, he was born that way" Kid. "How do you know?" Adult. "He played with dolls instead of sports" Kid "you mean he was a sissy"
  2. Most people i have spoke with who do not like going to the temple cite the reason as the "formality" is you will. The church is very relaxed in the way it is set up and the temple is very ceremonial. I think Catholics might have an easier time then some LDS members. (Speaking of the ritualistic nature and not the teachings themselves)
  3. I would have to disagree with you (just to prove the posters point^_^) and say that most the discussions with " such disparate responses" , especially the most "heated" on the boards are not doctrinal. It isn't 2 kingdoms of heaven vs 3 or Jesus died for all sin vs the elect. It's the " are rated r movies ok" and " is it ok to wear a 2 piece to the beach" that get all the play because they are not "basic doctrine" The principal behind them are but not exact questions. So OP you aren't seeing a difference in understanding of basic doctrine (we all know chastity is important for example) what you are seeing is a difference in ideas on how to apply said doctrine.
  4. Yea my point wasn't to discuss tithing but in another thread, the one i linked it was established tithing isn't charity (in the fact it pays for building upkeep etc and not direct help for the needy, we know it is legally) and Jon Doe himself said So i'm with wingnut on this If you subtract church tithe money $200 for President Obama and 10% tithe for your average member i would be willing to bet he beats most members charitable contributions. So unless we are donating 5.9% of our income to fast offering, and the humanitarian fund we shouldn't criticize

  6. I never understood using the dictionary for spelling. You can't spell something so you're told to look it up but the words are organized by... spelling. Sure it can help some times but sucks when you try to look up sycology fone bewtifull cawt ackchuel becuz buk fut rite rong etc.
  7. Does she have wants? I mean i don't mean to sound insensitive but at that age, and much older, the courts decide what is best. I.E. a kid under the age of____ (varies by state) cannot decide what parent they want to live with in a custody dispute. Their wishes are irrelevant. It's all about what is best for the child. As it should be Now from an LDS stand point most would say 2 parents trump 1 but from a legal perspective is this relevant? I mean in cases of custody battle they don't "give points" to the parent who gets remarried first do they?
  8. This is the problem i was referring to.
  9. Come on JAG you should know this better than anyone
  10. If the reporting is correct... It is a problem that should be addressed.
  11. Nope.
  12. No. If financial failure and war is punishment for sin then the "greatest generation" must have really been bad to have the great depression with 25% unemployment followed by 400,000 deaths in ww2.
  13. Don't want to make this political but if i was to ask "who is Barrak Obama" I would get as many different answers as there are people ranging from a socialist bent on destroying the country to great president changing the country for the better. This is a man we can all see, and hear. Who's words can be recorded verbatim and we can't agree who he is what the chance of agreeing on and "invisible" entity with 3rd hand accounts and all our cultural differences? The idea they are worshiping a false God because they call him Allah (as an example) makes as much sense as me claiming Jamie123 must be homeless and car less because he claims to live in a flat and drives a lory. (Everyone knows it's a truck and communal living buildings are apartments so he must be making it up.) This is further complicated with the addition of polytheism however i am under the impression all people who worship God worship the same one and with the plan of salvation the way it is this is ok. A Muslim can make it to the Celestial Kingdom just as an LDS Bishop.
  14. You should be proud of the fact that your daughter is so mature that she would come to you and tell you of her employment, knowing that you would disagree with it. While she might not be doing what you would want from her you can rest assured that the strength you taught her will serve her well in this job. or "Don't look at me, i have boys";)
  15. I didn't relize. On the topic at hand i am an evolutionist so the idea that there were other people makes sense to me.
  16. Just to put it out there in the US this is the Adams family. http://thm-a03.yimg.com/nimage/ca2c82d56107c66e Just wanted to beat Moksha to the joke:)
  17. What have our prophets said? From the Newsroom. The official church resource for, news media, opinion leaders and the public.
  18. I don't think there is error in council. It isn't right or wrong, it just is. On another thread we have been discussing the council not to date outside your race, culture or religion. Some are successful in marriage following this council and others find success not following it. One who gets confirmation that it isn't right for them is no more wrong or right then one who receive confirmation that is is right for them. Them being the important part. Too often i fear we forget that we are known by God as individuals and as such council might be different children. (same way it is with our own children). This is why we are given council and not commandments on many issues.IMO
  19. Is he related to the little jerk who keeps stealing the socks when i do laundry:mad:
  20. This really applies to all college. I know a fair share of brick and mortar grads working customer service for a cell phone company or managing a store in the mall along side a high school grad. Heck my wifes last supervisor (same pay grade) is sitting on an MBA and her subordinate is Corn Husker alumni. OP I think a big part of school is knowing how your going to market yourself. It isn't Get a degree to get the job , it is get the degree to compete for the job. In the last 15-20 years, particularly in the medical field, entry level degrees have gone from BS to MS to Doctoral. I think this is related to the increase in education for the masses. If you can, go to a community college first. I'm going online(because i have to) paying 5x what my neighbor is at the local CC and doing twice the work.
  21. Both. Aside from signing my name (and usually i just use a pin #) i haven't written anything by hand in years. I'm in school also but it is online so everything is typed.
  22. Fact of the matter is the vast majority of the inhabitants of the CK will not have been members. In 1990 more children died before reaching the age of 5 then the entire membership of the church. 12.7 million. 2008 was 8.8 and 2007 was 9.2. In just 3 years 30.7 million people qualified for the Celestial Kingdom. This is fairly recent with advanced technology.(though much of the deaths come from 3rd world countries) Us Mormons (assuming i make it) will be few and far between there. Also what makes you think only 90% will make it? I would argue given the long history of man and the short time/ limited area the gospel has been available means even more (non before the age of accountability deaths) will get in then members. The Celestial kingdom is not a place reserved for LDS members and anyone who tells you so doesn't understand the scriptures or math.
  23. It's not (IMO). I have heard many say, i'm sure it was brought up on this thread, that if the follow everything and it turns out the council was wrong it will be on "their (the Prophet) head" and the member will be a ok. Personally i don't agree with this idea. It is too reminiscent of "just following orders" to me. It also negates one of the members of the Godhead (the Holy Ghost) and one of the most important gospel principles, Personal revelation. I think it all comes down to intent. Prophet says we should not work on Sunday doesn't mean brother Jones should quit his job, that makes him work on Sunday. It means brother Jones should pray and seek the best thing for his family. That people seeking employment should consider this. I would say there is nothing wrong with questioning. The danger comes from not seeking confirmation and either not following it out of spite ("it's only council why follow it") or following it blindly (and judging others based on it)("it was said at GC, anyone who doesn't do it is a sinner") Also many say if you can't give in on the little stuff how can you be ready for the big stuff. I say getting revelation on the little stuff prepares you for revelation on the big stuff.
  24. Spelling is overrated:) I still can't spell. It it wasn't for spell check... I have actually been losing my ability to write, I went to write a check a couple of months ago and told the banker i was having trouble. She made a joke about the amount of money making it difficult but it was actually a hard time making my hands work in that manor. Writing will be a lost art form in 20 years.
  25. Many times women are late in reporting this type of thing( and worse). We would have a better justice system we did. But in the US getting the story out is as important (if not more is some peoples eyes) then getting it to court. Is it different in the UK?
