  1. I think hell shows up more in the NT then the old because of the "change" in doctrine so to speak. The OT is very authoritarian.Eye for an eye. Stoning, is a huge incentive to refrain from committing adultery for example. Then Jesus comes along and says "he who is without sin cast the first stone" He is saying judgment is for God, he seems to focus more on the dos then the do nots. At the same time to keep people from thinking "well if i'm not getting stoned it must be ok" (similarly to how when public law changes people accept the action in question is no longer sin or not as bad) so he spends more time to reiterate that while it isn't our place to judge, the judgment will still come.
  2. I wouldn't do anything different.(except squeeze in little more family time). I would much rather be judged on what i know/ do now then to hear, "so you really kicked in when you new the end was coming" (lukewarm) In track i used to run the 400 yard dash, you start out with a sprint for the first 100, pace the next 200 then kick it in for the last 100. I don't think life is a long sprint, more like running the 2 mile, pick a pace you can maintain and keep it up the whole time.
  3. It's official. You are my favorite poster:clap:
  4. You picked up on the bored part and made a joke in good taste, The word that stuck out when i read it was puny But i will refrain from making any jokes
  5. See this is what i find most interesting about the universal health care debate. There are issues of can people afford health care but this thread focuses on wait times and i hear other arguments about how hospital and clinics run and people have this idea the problems will go away with a universal system but when looking at the "universal system" we have VA/ Tri Care the problems are still there. Active duty members, who have free health care still use the E.R. as a clinic because getting an appointment can take 3-7 days, depending on staff, facilities, what your seen for etc. So if people want to discuss the cost i say that's a good discussion. If people think the E.R.s will empty, everyone will get same day appointment, and care will suddenly be fast an efficient like your local fast food joint, because someone else pays, they are really over simplifying the medical field.
  6. ...and lessons learned So being the wonderful thoughtful hubby that i am i decided to be a gentleman and get the car prepped for my wife's ride to work, warming it up, scraping the windows etc. Being a man who values comfort over fashion naturally i wanted to wear my most comfortable shoes, my Crocs. The problem is with all the holes they don't make good winter footwear so i had to find a way to keep my feet warm an the snow out. I couldn't just wear socks, i hate wet socks so i decided on grocery sacks, i have thousands, literally, and knew the snow would slide right off them. What i didn't figure out (until 2 steps outside and a numb butt later) was how the lack of traction on the top would translate to the lack of traction on the bottom. Lessons learned: 1. Smooth plastic is slippery (maybe that is why the make sleds out of it) 2. Doing nice things for others can be a pain in the butt (literally). 3. Let the wife scrape her own windows;) What are your great moments in intellectual absences ? And most importantly, what did you learn? ("twisted" lessons, see lesson 3, wanted)
  7. Depends on the member. I would say... Yes. Yes, as others have pointed out there are 2 parts. God was once a man, We can become like God. The church focuses on the 2nd part but i think the first really supports the 2nd. It's like a father (in this case his Representative) who says "Son, if you buckle down and do your studies, do this this and this you can make it through med school" It (IMO) holds more weight coming from a father who is Dr,who went through it, rather then one who never set foot in in the class room after high school. Yes. (Note these our my personal views, and church really doesn't dwell on these things. Plus i'm not your typical member:D)
  8. Gosple Principal Manual. (the class taught to new members) We do teach it.
  9. i don't know of anyone who cannot get financial aid for school. Getting the money is easy, paying it back now that's where it gets difficult. Seriously many schools are businesses, they will bend over backward to get "your" money,
  10. I don't really see this as a zero tolerance issue, as pointed out by JAG this is vandalism, whether she put" i love my friends" or a racist epithet the crime is the same and should be treated as such. I see zero tolerance as the lego gun incident brought up by wingnut. The rule no guns is meant to prevent people from bringing actual firearms or maybe fake ones that could be seen as real . A lego could never be seen as real therefor the punishment doesn't fit. Here the rule is meant to prevent vandalizm, (i assume, the article is too much fluff and not enough facts)anything (regardless of what it says) written on the school desk in marker is vandalism. So i see this as an issue of is the rule to strict, and not a zero tolerance issue. IMO
  11. Summed up beautifully. Should we vote for a close of the tread ?(is this a democracy?) I vote yea, (answered as best it can be)
  12. Who's the worlds wealthiest man?William Henry "Bill" Gates III Who's the worlds most powerful man?Silvio Berlusconi Prime Minister of Italy (debatable) But reading this would you assume God can't be richer or more powerful? No I'm sure you would realize man means just that. Man I can honestly say that no man(or women) told me i should marry my wife. (in fact many thought the opposite) Yet i can assure you i was told it was the right thing to do.
  13. You missed some quotes there. While it is safe to say the church doesn't teach this now, clearly it was taught and believed by many church authorities in the past. So past prophets/ apostle taught a literal conception More recent taught we take no stand, we don't speculate Apologist teach nope Who would know more? Whether or not it is true is neither here nor there (personally i think a physical union between physical God of flesh and bone and women of flesh and blood, teachings of the church leaders make sense. And the reason people dismiss is and call it "touchy" is because they think God follows our laws (which given the OT is clearly not the case) But my problem is people discounting it as some "crazy folk doctrine" picked up from an obscure quote here or their when it is clearly more rooted in the church then that.
  14. I'm not that old, but i do recall having the global warming scare taught in grade school when i was a kid.
  15. This was taught by many past leaders and even in a 2002 ensign, Jesus Christ is the Son of Elohim both as spiritual and bodily offspring; that is to say, Elohim is literally the Father of the spirit of Jesus Christ and also the body in which Jesus Christ performed His mission in the flesh, and which body died on the cross and was afterward taken up by the process of resurrection, and is now the immortalized tabernacle of the eternal spirit of our Lord and Savior Literal parent of Jesus, Spirit parent of the rest. There is more. The Prophets an apostles have taught a physical conception in the past, The only person with athority (that i have found) who "spoke out against" it was Harold B Lee. Who doesn't say it is false but that teachers shouldn't speculate. Everything i have found against it comes from apologist , who's doctrinal opinions are as binding as any other member.
  16. I always liked the Catholic confessional (anonymity) and like the prayer candles.
  17. So that's why i love it. We found a way to turn lard into chocolate. and people say there is no proof of God
  18. Actually this is a good example of why the handbook isn't public. Say someone prays, gets confirmation they shouldn't have more kids and traditional methods don't work so they decide to go more permanent. Suddenly brother so and so, who has no idea about the spiritual relationship / confirmation of said member overhears the member talking about their decision, He's thumbed through the handbook once or twice and suddenly instead of a Bishop discussing the permanent nature of a decision that shouldn't be taken lightly , it becomes a discussion about how /if sterilization is a sin
  19. I always thought it was to keep people like me from "Nah Bishop Jones, it's cool, i only went this far on this issue, the book draws the line after it, a step further which i didn't cross, so no need to sweat it:smokindevil:"
  20. As far as i understand all money is pretty much worthless (since we left the gold standard) except for it's perceived value.(even gold's a perceived value) But at least the US Government currency has this... Without that backing you're just buying coupons/ gift cards. I wouldn't convert hard earned green backs into walmart or target gift cards (that i could spend and get just about anything i needed with them anywhere) I wouldn't do it with this (at least in any greater amount i would by a gift card. E.G. If i planed on getting a message i might buy one for the cost and save a couple of bucks, but i wouldn't go trade in a whole paycheck .
  21. I must say i am appalled by my fellow member inability to understand "line upon line" and the scriptures 2 or 3 witnessess what does Alma say Moroni Anyone see the common denominator.? Yes the lord has (through his Church) and scriptures established a pattern. It is clear that one who chooses to eat Chocolate (one of Gods greatest gifts to man, besides bacon) they should do so with an appreciation and respect. White chocolate allows one really make that connection. and is clearly the superior chocolate product. I'm reminded of a talk a while back "good, better, best" Reading books is good, reading books together as a family are better, reading scriptures together as a family is best. Similarly milk chocolate is good, dark chocolate is better, but white chocolate is best. And shouldn't we try to do the best things first?:)
  22. Blacks were never excluded from the church, they were excluded from the Priesthood until a few decades ago. Actually so many "naysayers" like to accuse the church of racism because of this Priesthood policy. Interestingly enough while segregation (as a state law) is no longer valid it still exist in many (non LDS) churches to this day. While "we" were not giving them them Priesthood yet inviting them into our pews many other religious organizations were telling them to get their own pews.
  23. I was wondering what the atomic suplex has to do with eating meat
  24. I don't mean to discount others experiences but given my children's responses to a big purple dinosaur and a red furry monster i (personally) wouldn't be quick to assume they see more based on these types of responses.
