Just a small note - the temple in North Carolina is a small temple without laundry facilities. He'll still need his own temple robes.

Your future FIL is setting the terms for the wedding. It's only a one-day, one-time thing. Yes, it's a big thing, but a successful wedding is one where both the bride and groom show up, and they say "I do" or "yes". Your concern should more be focused on how your bride-to-be feels about her father and how your relationship with him will be AFTER the wedding. If you maintain an expectant attitude towards him... and he fails to meet up to those expectations... then he will constantly disappoint you. He is who he is. Accept that, and accept him for who he is. There is nothing to say to him... but you had better invite him to the reception anyways, or you'll really pay for it later.

I've had the same problem for a while for my smartphone too.

LDS Family Services scaling back on their adoption services
skippy740 replied to pam's topic in Church News and Events
I agree. I don't think that LDSFS felt any outside pressure (from activists or whatever) to help same-sex couples adopt, or place children with same-sex couples... but I do believe that they want to follow the letter and spirit of the law. With the way that laws are changing, might as well voluntarily make this change, instead of any possible pressure down the line. And with a lower "supply & demand"... it just makes all the more sense. -
LDS Family Services scaling back on their adoption services

Sorry, but I don't buy it. I'm not going to turn this into a debate on same-sex marriage... but this is one of the consequences. Now THAT I believe, but not necessarily the statements that followed that one. With the same-sex marriage issue having been recently ruled on in Utah (December 20th, 2013), this would seem to be a natural consequence of that decision. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Utah This is a KSL article, not one from the Mormon Newsroom... so I get to doubt and speculate behind the REAL reasons for this decision. -
Sorry, but I disagree with you. The best way to be insulated against these events... is to have as much cash on hand (or to be paid to you) as possible. If you owe $20,000... but you have $100,000 in cash, easily accessible... you have no problem. You can "pay off" things by having enough cash on hand to make payments when life throws those curveballs at you. Otherwise, just because you accelerate a pay off, doesn't mean that the repo man won't still come if you miss 2 months of payments. Cash (on hand) is King! As for my next car... I plan to buy a used Lexus. Something that has probably over 100k miles and can be bought for about $5,000. Yeah, the gas mileage won't be as good, but the car will definitely last. Lots of these around with 300k-400k miles still going strong.

I don't think the participants are "advocating apostasy". I do think they have a point of view that they wanted to be heard. After Elder Dallin H. Oaks gave that brilliant talk in Priesthood Session, the thinking and the position of the Church was made clear. To continue to assert for such change, after having received instruction on the principle... THAT is apostasy.

lol. No, the other quote. :)

Kate Kelly put up her own statement on the OW website. (No, I won't post the link here.) She's continuing forward, even though the church hearing will continue without her. She's moved from the area... and even though she's been in contact with her Bishop... it's not always the Bishop's call. If you are attacking the Church in a fundamental way, you can be excommunicated for apostasy. This is where the quote in my forum signature applies.

What would President Monson do if he lit a field on fire? Oh wait...

I see an Eagle Scout project in the works here.

"Cannot be saved in ignorance"... ignorance of what? Saved without the Law? Yet those who pass before the age of 8 are saved in ignorance, right? (And I'm talking about ALL children... because they are before the age of accountability. Yes, we also read about those born in the Kingdom and if they are not taught by the age of eight, the sin is upon the heads of the parents.) That's where GRACE applies... to help make up the difference with our finite (though innumerable to us) sins, with the infinite Atonement of Christ. Where the Atonement is applied, then yes, the different degrees of obedience actually performed... will receive the same reward, if they both call upon the Atonement of Christ.

Perhaps my thoughts on "Eternal Progression" (gained primarily through experiences and making choices... why we chose and kept our First Estate) is flawed? D&C 132:19-20 While this scripture is primarily describing entering into the Everlasting Covenant of Marriage, it does describe what it means to "be gods". It is simply stating that "they have no end". D&C 130:18-19 It doesn't say anything about knowledge being a pre-requisite to becoming more like our Father in Heaven. Abraham 3:24-25 It says "if they will do"... not determine how much you need to "know". D&C 130:20-21 It would appear that obedience 'trumps' knowledge obtained. So, we need to not "over-complicate" the plan of salvation. That we need to humble ourselves as little children, and follow and do what we have been commanded by revelation to do. I like that Anddenex referenced the parable of the workers in the vineyard. Were the workers who were hired to labor... did they all perform their labors - despite the length of time? I believe the parable states that they all did. So I got to learn something out of this - that it isn't necessarily about following the commandments AND knowledge, but in simply following the commandments and humbling ourselves to be as little children, even as Christ submits to the Father.

Let's see... you followed your Bishop's counsel on saving up for a mission... and a more noble and necessary expense came up... and you were prepared. Perhaps your Bishop's counsel, in the grand scheme of things, was meant for you to be prepared for this? When I was preparing my missionary papers, I needed to see the dentist. I called one up and asked for an appointment. They said "We won't have any time for 2 weeks, but you can come in right now." I asked "How much?" "$116". I didn't have any money of my own at the time. So I asked my mother - who just came back from grocery shopping. I said "Mom, Could I have $116 for a dentist appointment right now?" After shopping for a family of five, she had EXACTLY $116 for me to see the dentist. Sometimes things just work out. Have faith that where there is a will to serve the Lord, a way will be provided. I can't think of a more noble cause than to help with medical expenses for your mother who has cancer. Trust the Lord, and have faith in your leaders. You will be able to serve.

Sometimes I think of pre-mortal life in a similar vein as the MTC. It is a full schedule with many classes, probably taught by resurrected beings. If you believe in the "Saturday's Warrior"-myth of "the one", then "the one" may be your companion in the pre-mortal MTC. Plenty to eat (oh wait... we didn't have to eat, did we?)... and not much temptation (let alone opportunity) to break rules. But it's a safe place right before entering the mission field. That's just my perspective - the pre-mortal life (after the Great Council in Heaven) was a time of great instruction. I think I probably ditched a few classes though! lol!

I have a conflicting opinion. On one hand, we know that children who die are not held accountable for any sins. They are pure and they are returned to the Father. We can read about that in Moroni 8 as well as many statements from General Authorities. On the other head, I also believe in Eternal Progression - that we will be continuously learning, and making decisions based on experiences, even after this life. Is it possible to become like the Father without having had to make choices that could have the potential for mistakes and/or sin? To me, I don't think that's possible. Is there a conflicting doctrine? Yes and no. For salvation, we know that little children will be saved. But for exaltation - to grow and become more like the Father - I don't see how that can be done, except through experiences held and learned from.

The message is for everyone but the culture is not.

That's hard, and I can empathize. I have A.D.D. and I take medication for it. I know my symptoms, and I think I can recognize them in others. While I feel "at home" in my ward... I also feel pretty broken because I am divorced and my kids live with my ex-wife in the next county over. I really do like my ward, and my calling in it (cub scouts)... but I wish I felt "complete" with my family attending with me. With children with "special needs"... I once had a boy in my cub scout den. He was so shy and sometimes just curled up into a ball (I think that's a symptom of autism, if I remember correctly). His shyness made me wonder how "high functioning" he was. I just wasn't sure. I saw that he wore a hearing aid of some kind, so I knew he had special needs of one kind or another. It was just hard to get him to open up and participate at times. As his leaders, we wanted him to have fun and be sure that he is learning. It was hard for us. Strangely enough, we discovered that he just LOVED being outside... and was a little 'daredevil' in his own way! (I thought he could break himself with some of the stuff he liked doing!) He did advance and progress to earn his Webelos rank and Arrow of Light award. I also attended a Court of Honor some time ago. This other ward had a boy scout who was blind. Yet he earned his ARCHERY merit badge! How can a blind person earn a merit badge in archery? With electronic censors like a "stud finder" to help you to aim! I was amazed, and he seemed to be a great kid. If the leaders can figure it out, a way can be found. With my calling as a den leader and cub master, when I notice certain behavior tendencies, I just make it a point to ask the parents about it - what I notice, and ask their advice/opinion on how I can help best. Sometimes they have ideas, and sometimes they don't. At least they know that I'm paying individual attention to these boys. I hope your son's teachers have asked you for help in learning how to relate and teach your son. At least that would show that they want to help in the best way they can. -

"Non-farm sites include the Haun’s Mill and the Far West Burying Ground in Missouri as well as the Joseph Smith Sr. home in Kirtland, Ohio." [...] When contacted by KSL-TV regarding the sale, the Community of Christ issued a statement that included, "Ongoing preservation is Community of Christ’s paramount concern for Haun’s Mill, the Far West Burying Ground and the Smith Sr. home in particular."

View a more "traditional" view of the forums

Okay, typing in the other format shows a lot of html coding... so it's not perfect. I still prefer the other view though. -
Before I close this thread, I'm going to point out something very obvious, but completely missing from this thread. The Church is administered through imperfect people who are entitled to receive revelation and let the Spirit guide their decisions. The CHI is there to help support leaders in making these decisions, but if there were "hard and fast rules" for every gray area, they wouldn't be gray, and there would be little need for leniency, mercy, and leadership. The Church would be purely adminstered by the handbook, and removing any spirit of discernment from each and every leader. That being said, anyone can have whatever view they want on the subject. Let Bishops, Stake Presidents, and Mission Presidents preside over their stewardships. Let us sustain them, even with broad and different ways of administering church discipline. Let us work out our own salvation, and not worry about what everyone else is doing or getting away with. http://lds.net/forums/topic/50888-new-rules-for-sexual-discussion/ This thread is now closed.

If you use Firefox or Chrome, look for an extension or add-on for a "user-agent switcher". Install it to your browser. Now use the extension and choose a mobile phone or handset view... and you can enjoy the forums in a better, user-friendly format. :) Yep, I cheated... and I'm proud of it! :)
