  1. ‘X’ would kill them for sure! The really annoying thing this term is that, Student Services used to be my staunch ally. Student Services used to nag them about getting grades so that the students would get jobs. Well no more of that! My area of about 2,400 students now has its own counselor, in addition to the University’s counselling service, and this counselor says students are too stressed. So no more nagging about good grades because this will stress the students. The sad thing is that the students don’t realize that if they do not rise to the opportunities presented during their undergrad, they will never again be presented so many opportunities for so little input on their part. We have a lot of companies that come to sign on our students for very impressive training programs. All the companies are looking for is a good attitude. Most of my students won’t even go to the initial company presentation. In the students’ defence, they have no idea of the realities of the job market, because we don’t tell students the truth, because we don’t want to stress the students!
  2. I have occasionally had brief discussions with some of my students about their futures. They telll me things like, I really want to work in ‘x’ but I would need to get an A in this course and I am getting a C Plus. I say, ‘Why not read the chapter before you go to class? They look at me as if I had three heads and say, ‘I would never even think of doing that’. And they would not even THINK of doing such a thing. The mere concept of reading the textbook obviously causes them pain. My guess is that about 1/2 in my course have not bought the textbook. I tried to cover all the material in class this term for this reason as this would allow most students to use the slides and not the text. Maybe I should cut material?
  3. https://www.theguardian.com/science/shortcuts/2018/nov/07/oumuamua-alien-spaceship-scientists-harvard-professors I don’t want a range of theories. I want aliens Very Funny!
  4. I admit that I know little about US politics. Is the any chance of a moderate 3rd party? I know most US church members are Republican But is there an not acceptable compromise candidate with a steadier personality than the current incumbent?
  5. Is anyone doing/recently done an undergraduate degree or college course? I just finished the lectures for a university course and I was wondering about student’s reactions to lectures. I can see that my students are tired of hearing lectures. I am throwing too much info at them in too short a period of time. We had a good lecture today in which we covered a tricky area of law that affected them personally. On the other hand we did not cover all of the info for the exam. What to do? I know that many profs cut out more and more information every year. Perhaps I should do this? I can see that my students have information overload. They look exhausted. What do you think? Do you wish that your instructors taught less material per course?
  6. @zil Excellent! Very good lessons! Your lab sounds like a caring place. I bet the ‘amusing videos’ are good!
  7. @anatess2 and @Carborendum Thanks so much! I will look into Li Mu Bai in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Chow Yun Fat. They may be just the thing! I was mentioning that I do not watch R movies because I miss quite a few popular movies due to this rule! Thanks again!
  8. Dear @Carborendum I am so sorry! I see how much work that you put into your answer and I can see that I was very unclear! I am trying to explain to a student how a Health and Safety manager can, by the sheer force of their personality, backed up by the company, impress on the errant employee, that said employee must change their behavior. My students are looking for jobs and Health and Safety is an option...but if the students do not feel comfortable firmly reprimanding factory workers then H&S is not an option. Managers in my legal jurisdiction are not allowed to yell or swear at employees but as the same time, they have to control employees' behavior. Tough GiG. I know what you mean about: Kenneth Branaugh - St. Crispin's day speech (Henry V). Bill Pullman - President's Speech (Independence Day). These people are inspiring but what about situations where managers need to convey an undertone of menace?. There is a scene in Sweeney Todd in which Alan Richman tells off a cannibalistic barber but I can't find a clip. Hmm. I may need to demonstrate!
  9. Movie: Character with deep powers of persuasion Dear Forum: I was discussing job opportunities with one of my students. People who lead Health and Safety Operations at Plants are paid large amounts of money here. I was discussing the type of personality required with the student. In this job, you need to impress on factory employees the need to wear Personal Protective Equipment and to obey safety regulations without swearing or raising your voice. Does anyone know of a Movie or TV character with this level of conviction? I am somewhat hampered because I do not watch Xrated movies. Does anyone know of such a character? I have met H&S managers with this level of conviction but I can't produce them for this student. I thought of Snape in Harry Potter but I am not sure that this conveys what I am looking for. Any ideas? Thank you!
  10. I think that a move towards the Center would be a good move for the Dem’s. Perhaps a move to dignity and acting Presidential could become a trend.
  11. @Midwest LDS as I think their actions in the House will greatly influence the outcome of the 2020 election. Can you please explain? I really want USMCA ago pass the House so I am a bit concerned about a divided House.
  12. Cardinal rule: Be Nice To Pam! Two jobs, a house to run, and many hobbies. Repeat after me: Be Nice To Pam! 🤭
  13. I have no argument with this statement. Does anyone have an argument with this statement? I live in a world in which gun violence is very low. I think there may be 1-2 gun deaths/ 100000 people per year in my area and this is up from zero gun deaths per year. I simply live in a different world than you do and my police are lovely people. In fact, in the capital of Canada, it is the custom to celebrate our national day by going to Parliament and taking selfies with the police...you can hardly imagine doing that with @mirkwood can you?

    Pageants

Is the church trying to lessen the burden on families by cutting the number of administrative duties for members? Less time organizing out of house activities? So fewer church members asked to organize pagents? In my neck of the woods, where we have few members, the sacrifices that the few stallwart members are asked to make can be very hard on their families.
  15. Let's Go!
  16. Fine then! We will be visiting NZ instead! Can’t drink the wine anyway!
  17. If I got training and passed the safety, I would not: be able to carry a gun, other than to the shooting range get any thanks from anyone, in fact, quite likely the cops would park on my street to keep an eye on me, upsetting my lovely neighbors no one would be happy. I would be regarded as undermining public safety and if I DID use the gun to defend myself, there would be quite a lot of difficulty in explaining how I knew in advance that I might need one. Everyone, including my own family, would have the gravest suspicions as to my extracurricular activities. I would spend quite a lot of time and money explaining myself. If I lived in the wilderness, I am sure that a rifle would be an easier matter.

    Queen Creek

@Dubs Glad that you are here! Welcome!
  19. The article is correct in that there is no right to own a gun here. There is, in particular, no right to own a handgun. For most of my life only the police have had handguns. There may now be a small loop hole in that you might possibly be allowed to keep a hand gun in your own home under some conditions. Perhaps you might be able to store the handgun to take it to a rifle range. Still one would have to be licensed, pass safety tests and I am quite sure that a woman who did so would be unusual enough to come to the attention of the rcmp. Also, there is no way, whatsoever, that I could tote that gun around with me. And if I did shoot someone with that handgun, I would quite likely be serving time. There is no ‘stand your ground’ law. i teach Constitutional Law and the attitude towards Constitutional Rights is quite different here. For example, the Constitition can be easily disregarded by the Provincial Legislature. There are two ‘wild cards’. One is the ‘Not Withstanding’ Clause. Under this clause, the provincial government can choose to disregard the constitition for any reason. Quebec has done so, so many times I cannot tell you! Quebec disregards the constitution to keep English off signs in order to preserve the French language. The other reason to disregard the constitution is that sometimes to follow the constitution would not be in keeping with the values of a just society. So Saskatchewan was told that it would unconstitutional to allow school children to attend some sort of separate school system but disregarded the constitition to allow the children to remain in the school system. Temporarily, I think. This country has a different way of looking at right and wrong. (Yes. This WILL be on the final!)
  20. We do have a lot of rifles but not in my area. Canada is mostly wilderness in terms of area. Rifles are common in remote areas and we have a lot of remoteness. If I were to enter a rifle range I would upset everyone I know and one of my goals in life is not to upset others. A different approach to life but one which is common where I live.
  21. He looks very nice!
  22. There was a rather sad story in my city this year. A man was reported carrying knives down the Main Street. The police descended. What was he carrying? A butcher’s block with kitchen knives that he had picked up from someone’s garbage, He was quite inoffensively carrying his booty home!
  23. My bishop is from Liberia and has seen a lot of sorrow in his life. I think that he would cry if he saw one of his sisters with a gun. He is a gentle man who carries the wounds of many sad stories. It would break my heart to add to his troubles.
  24. So kind! I was trying to think about the expression on my bishop’s face if I went to a rifle range. Even an lds man would not do such a thing here! It would probably be more acceptable to go and hang around a bar! The sisters that I minister to would be rather upset! Still I have been having a really hard time placing my Books of Mormon! Maybe we folks in my town need to branch out more?
