a deeply troubling quote from E McConkie
mnn727 replied to antispatula's topic in General Discussion
I have a real issue with 'making ones callings and elections sure' when President Faust started almost every GC talk with a statement about praying he would be able endure to the end. I really don't know of anyone who was closer to being like Christ than President Faust was. -
None -- it's been in the 70's here in Texas for over a week now.

Words of Wisdom?
mnn727 replied to mustang90's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
Its ok, I still miss a glass of wine with dinner also after almost 20 years now as a member, but the line from my signature applies I believe: "Worship without sacrifice is just words" -

And you have what authority to define this? -

Carol Not to be disrespectful, but do some Catholics follow the teachings of the Catholic Church better than others do? As far as the cattle ranch it is for feeding those that need assistance, along with orange groves, vineyards, welfare farms, graineries, etc. If you are receiving food from the Church (because you need assistance - similar to what Catholic Charities does), you will only receive approx 1 pound of meat per person per week, for the average American that is sparingly. -
10% of your Will
mnn727 replied to Bini's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
The Lord has not blessed us with any children, and both my wife and I are the youngest members of our families by quite a bit and will presumably outlive our siblings, there are some nieces and nephews that will get a few personal items from us but other than a few specific personal items the Church will get our estate when we both die -- assuming its not all eaten up in medical expenses as my mothers estate was. -
I am not LDS because I have a testimony of the history of the Church; the Church has humans in it and any organization with humans in it will not be perfect or have a perfect history. Only Jesus was perfect the rest of us all fall short of that mark (some of us more than others) I am LDS because I have a witness that this is where God wants me to be.

So you're not looking for the right answer, just any old answer will do?

Had the exact same thing happen to me. I converted after my father died, and when I went to start I found out some 3rd cousin far removed had already entered him and got quite a bit of info wrong (death date and place), but again like you there was no doubt it was him. (this was in the old days before the internet and tightened rules) I was angry for a while (close to a year I guess), then I finally realized that the important thing was that his work was done, not who did it.

My name was the number 1 name for boys born in my year and I was fine with it, I would have hated an odd name. Also please parents NEVER EVER give your child a 'cute name' or even a more common name with a unique spelling.

Ready to start dating and finding "the one"
mnn727 replied to kayako44's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
There really is no one way, I found that when I was looking I seldom found anyone. When I was just going about everyday life is when I would meet someone, invite them out for dinner and/or a movie and let it progress from there -
Really Need Help...Long and Detailed Sorry
mnn727 replied to synergy13's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
if the relationship was sexual, then the answer is yes. To use the old baseball metaphor if you got past 2nd base it was sexual. Sexual sin is something you need to talk with your Bishop about. Normally I would advise you not to wait, however, hearing these two things, I may wait until a new Bishop is called. I would also discuss with him your need for privacy as you did with us. Having been in a Bishopric there are things I have heard that will go to my grave undivulged to anyone but the Lord in prayer, I never even told my wife. Details should have never gone to anyone outside the Bishopric, the only thing that should have been told would be if a member is disfellowshipped or excommunicated (to those that needed to know) was that the person was not eligible for: callings, saying prayers, HT/VT Details NEVER should have been disclosed. When you are done you can put away all these questions and doubts. If you go to a Church court over this there will be: the Bishop, his two counselors and the Ward Clerk. As far as giving the name of the other woman, I would wait and see if you are asked. It may or may not be better if you tell her yourself that you have been asked (assuming you are). You could also tell the Bishop that you are uncomfortable discussing who the person was and see what he says, it will be up to him whether he believes he needs to know the name of the person. If she is still a member of your Ward I would think he would, if she is not then I am not sure, he holds the Keys about this, not me or anyone else on this board. I really do wish you well, the process may not be easy, but it will be worth it. -
No its not needed. In fact a 4 wheel drive vehicle just means you get stuck further from nowhere (ask me how I know) A front wheel drive will help, but knowing your driving abilities and not trying to out drive your ability is the most important thing. I drove rear wheel drives for years in WI and MN

We just switched from 8:30 AM to 1 PM The noise level from the kids went up drastically (they want their naps). There are 3 wards in our building and we have not had the middle shift in the 6 years we've been here -- Starting to get a bit peeved about that.

differential requirements for salvation?
mnn727 replied to searching_questioner's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
There is a difference between Salvation and Exaltation. Thus the different requirements -- LDS at all levels really need to make that distinction -
I've always liked "So let it be written, so let it be done"OR as an alternative "So say we all"

The Temple Prep class is a great start, remember that much of what happens in the Temple is symbolic which (to me at least) is very different from what you learn in Church

I don't know how to answer what it is with out running afoul of forum rules and good taste but as far as your two questions the answers would be no and no.

I am going to be a bit different than everyone else. First I commend your desire, however as a convert of just 3 months now I doubt you have learned enough to be able to teach it yet. Also you won't be eligible to go to the Temple for 9 more months and that's a requirement for serving a mission. Here is what the Prophet Joseph Smith told his brother (who was with him since the beginning) Doctrine and Covenants 11:21 Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men.
