  1. Thanks, Gator! Yeah, came out of nowhere, which I like. I'm liking what I'm learning, but like I said, just starting.
  2. Anybody have thoughts on this guy? 2024 presidential candidate. Haven't heard of him before today, so lots of research needed on my part; wondering if anyone else has heard of him and if so, what you think. https://www.vivek2024.com/ Jordan Peterson Interview on YouTube
  3. FWIW: ...from tonight's scripture study. Prophecy must be fulfilled.
  4. Welcome to Third Hour, @Janson! Might I suggest that "understanding" would be better than "knowing" in the above sentence? If I know nothing about a particular truth, how can I live it? I might live it by fluke, not knowing what I'm doing, but that's not intentional and may or may not benefit me at all - certainly, it's not exercising faith and doesn't involve testimony. But if I know, for example, that the Church teaches modesty, but I don't understand what the big deal is, then I can intentionally exercise faith by living it without understanding. I generally agree with the idea presented in your post - e.g. I needn't know the details of Joseph Smith's life to know that he is a true prophet of God, I don't need biological knowledge explaining why coffee or tea is bad for me to have a testimony of the Word of Wisdom, and so on. Even if I could argue every point of Church history, it wouldn't convince anyone of anything, except maybe to not argue with me. The Spirit converts. The Spirit teaches truth. There is no need for me to justify my faith to anyone; I can walk away or testify, as appropriate. Before someone quotes that quote at me, I'll add that I'm grateful there are many very well-educated and skilled apologists for the Church out there. I'm not one of them. I'll just stick with serving in my callings and testifying when I can. As to your questions, my thoughts are too personal to share. I will simply say that even when life is bad, it's better when living the gospel of Jesus Christ (than it is when not living the gospel) - even if you have to force yourself to do it, even if some part of you wants to do otherwise. And I'll add that knowledge is worse than useless if you don't live according to that knowledge.
  5. Welcome to Third Hour, @superadamal!
  6. Welcome, @The BYP!
  7. The question was, how does it benefit the political left if we stay in the same society with them? If "we" means "the political right" then, whatever, I don't care. I interpreted "we" as "members of Christ's church"1. In that case, the answer seems beyond obvious: How will they know where to find it if we aren't among them, shining a light? As far as I know, the gathering of Israel is not complete, so we stay. (Don't know where else one would go anyway, though my friend says Costa Rica is nice.) 1though @Vort probably meant "the political right".
  8. Leaven, salt, candlestick, wheat and tares. You never know what good we might do, simply by shining a light in darkness.
  9. How bizarre. I cannot recall anyone ever saying that the Sacrament cleanses one from sin. Maybe they did and it went in one ear and out the other. Baptism is a little more complex, since I probably heard it and just assumed they were talking in shorthand and meant something more like what you write...
  10. Has someone ever said it did?
  11. What do you find irritating about it? The idea that Christ is our brother? The idea that He is elder? The affection? A perceived excess of familiarity / lack of respect or devotion? Or....? Mostly just curious.
  12. And, they're back! The day I posted that, I only saw the "Third Hour Popular Forums" category - the others were MIA. But I can see them today.
  13. Welcome, @sophietate!
  14. Thanks. I'll keep it in mind / warn folk I know who use other services.
  15. Hooray! Is the new account email confirmation issue fixed? (Just concerned that folks with email from someplace other than gmail won't be able to sign up - I'd like to know before I recommend they sign up, so I can warn them or not worry about it - no fewer than 3 domains failed for me, and two of those were free providers like gmail (including outlook.com), only one was my own domain.)
  16. Welcome to ThirdHour, @Thomas Red!
  17. Har. (Sorry, it was only worth one har, not two.)
  18. Meanwhile, apparently pronouns have been causing problems for centuries!
  19. FWIW, from this page, you can get to this page about the Greek that was translated as "his", which has "Strong's Definitions", which suggests this would not be reflexive of the subject (Christ), but of a person previously referenced (would have to be Peter) - if I'm reading it right.
  20. Genesis 14:18 reads: One could infer the city being taken up from JST Genesis 14:25-40 (esp 32-36). I've always assumed @Traveler was going off some source outside of scripture to assert that Melchizedek's Salem was taken in a manner like the city of Enoch.
  21. Here's what the wayback machine shows me.
  22. Whoa! Is it me, or did a whole bunch of sub-forums disappear? There used to be more specific gospel study boards, and those are all gone. Can't remember what other boards there used to be, but now there's only a handful. Can someone confirm it's not just me, that they're really gone?
  23. I suppose I should clarify. The person I mentioned was another American. We worked at the US Embassy there.
  24. Yes. No, not since I left there at the end of 1994. Probably, though I have no idea how much Putin's war impacts the average citizen.
  25. I'll ponder. I was trying to see if we could reach understanding on that one point before going back to our exchange that initially included the Nibley quote. I'm wondering now if the only disagreement and / or misunderstanding is simply in how we express the same idea... Anywho, I'll review the earlier exchange later and ponder some more to see if I can explain anything further / differently.
