piper Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 Congratulations!!! That is truly awesome. Brings back memories. December 17th is the day I entered the MTC in 1981 :) My prayers and best wishes are with you. Quote
BenRaines Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 my son went to the Dominican Republic. They go to Provo until visa comes in and then to Dominican MTC. Didn't know if they have a language MTC in Argentina or not. Ben Raines Quote
ElderBigDawg Posted October 15, 2008 Author Report Posted October 15, 2008 Visa? What is visa? It was in my packet, but I didn't understand what it meant. I thought it was taking about a VISA card or something. Quote
Palerider Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 congrats....my son went to Panama and had been home for over a year....all he needed was a passport....no visa....a visa allows you into the country ....some require one and some just a passport. Quote
mightynancy Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 A visa is a document from the host government allowing you to be in their country for a specified period of time. :) You usually get it from the closest consulate. A consulate is an office that facilitates relationships between two countries, and helps aliens in residence with any issues they have. Quote
ElderBigDawg Posted October 16, 2008 Author Report Posted October 16, 2008 To help prepare, I'm going to get a copy of the Book of Mormon in Spanish and compare it with my English one, and also check out some Spanish 101 websites. That way, I'll be better prepared to learn Spanish at the MTC. I want to be as fluent as possible. Quote
MarginOfError Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Congrats. Work hard and enjoy the two years before the best two years of your life. Don't worry too much about language prep before you go. You'll get plenty of that. Focus on the scriptures and read the other recommended reading. You won't have much time to do that once you go. Hemidakota Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Ditto...Church provides an online Spanish version of the scriptures: Escrituras Quote
rameumptom Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Salta's a neat area. I served 30 years ago in Bolivia. My last area, Yacuiba, was 5 miles from Argentina. One P-Day, We went by bus into Tartagal, Argentina (about 50 miles inside) with the assistants. While technically it was outside not only our mission, but our area, there were no missionaries in Tartagal at the time. A small scoop of ice cream in Tartagal was $4 back then! Ouch! I actually taught and baptized some members, who would technically be in your mission area. They lived right across the border from Bolivia in Pocitos. You will have gauchos in your mission. We had them come through our area on occasion. Some of them were easily close to 7 feet tall, and their clothing rather different. Argentine beef is the best in the world to eat. Lean, tender, and tasty. Part of your mission will be in El Chaco. This is an area of pampas that includes a portion of northern Argentina, southern Bolivia, and a portion of Paraguay. It is hot, very hot, in the summer in El Chaco (although not as hot as in the jungles of Bolivia, where some of its rivers dump into the Amazon). Quote
Starfish Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 ElderBD, I love your enthusiasm! You'll be a great asset down south. And Christmas in the MTC . . . you lucked out. You're gonna love it. Quote
ElderBigDawg Posted October 16, 2008 Author Report Posted October 16, 2008 My grandmother got me the Book of Mormon-D&C-PGP combo in Spanish! Awesome! She also purchased a Spanish bible for me too. I found out that there are no LDS-Spanish versions because the Catholic church has a copyright on it or something. Weird.ElderBD, I love your enthusiasm! You'll be a great asset down south. And Christmas in the MTC . . . you lucked out. You're gonna love it.Christmas at the MTC? Wow, that will be very lucky! Quote
rameumptom Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I was in the Provo MTC in 1978 for Christmas. President Kimball and Elder McConkie came on Christmas Day to see all 2000 of us missionaries. Awesome way to spend Christmas.... Quote
