Thethuthinnang Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I feel pretty Spiritual with my rebellious winter whiskers.I just think (just my opinion here) this is one of those rules that's really more a guideline, and it's up to each individual and how right or wrong they feel about it, to decide what to do. Trust your heart in all matters. :) Quote
Guest Utahrulzz Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 Favorite??? Wow, that's a tough one. I like them all....but I probably vacillate between Permanent Waves and Grace Under Pressure. I do love 2112 and am really into the latest one, Snakes and Arrows.Cool. Permanent Waves was always one of my favorites too. I really got into Counterparts and still think it's a great album. I like all of them as well. Thank You. Quote

He tends to be overlooked with Neil and Geddy in the band, but in my opinion he's a top notch player. Sure, you have Eddie and JP, Clapton, any of those great players, but Lifeson is right there with them. I played in a band before my mission, put the band dreams on hold and then never picked them back up after. Thank You. Quote

I do love 2112 and am really into the latest one, Snakes and Arrows.I don't know. That kind of music just seems to be of the devil to me. Wasn't it Brother Packer who gave a talk in conference on how the spirit of the lord cannot dwell in unholy temples? The brethren have preached for years against rock and roll music.Brother, don't pollute your mind with all that devil trash. You will live to regret it one day. I think that whatever is being played in the church office building is more conducive to the spirit. Keep that spirit and you can't go wrong. Quote

Oh wait, he likes Rush too...yikes!My car CD player has a a 2005 EFY cd in it, Consider the Lilly's from the Tab choir, a CD of beautiful songs by various LDS artists, a Bruce R McConkie talk and a RUSH CD. I feel quite ok about it and I regularly enjoy the companionship of the Spirit. Balance is a good thing. Quote

Snow Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 some struggle with facial hair or pornography, we all have weaknesses. Remember the rule of thumb? Say it out loud and see if it makes any sense. It applies here. Equating styling yourself ala Brigham Young or John Taylor or George Albert Smith with porn is, um, er, hmm... Quote

MormonMama Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 The brethren have preached for years against rock and roll music.Since when have they targeted any specific genre of music?I read an article just recently in which the writer (LDS) said that whether music was "evil" or not had nothing to do with the lyrics, melody, beat, type of instruments, etc. It had to do with the spirit in which it was written, and that you can discern that spirit when you listen. There is a lot of inspiring music out there of all genres. You can't write an entire genre off just because it contains some songs of questionable or downright negative influence. If I can find the article again or remember who wrote it, I'll post a link. pam Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 The brethren have preached for years against rock and roll music Hmmm amazing how so many youth/singles stake/regional dances play rock and roll. Quote
Carl62 Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 (edited) All this reminds me of a conversation I has a couple of days ago with a dear friend of mine who happens to be completely inactive in the church and she made the comment about there being so many rules and restrictions within the church that they could possibly drive people more away than closer to it. I would really hate to think that she could possibly be right in that we make the straightjacket so tight that people finally say 'enough!' I didn't think that was what the gospel was about. And what's worse yet is when people make up their own standards to conform to their lifestyle and then look their noses down on others in a judgemental way whose standards don't match the same as theirs. This, unfortunately is VERY prevalent in the church and honestly, care to have no part of it whatsoever. I play in a rock/jam band, had shoulder length hair and a beard up until Christmas, love my root beer and yes, have even worn non-white shirts to church (terrible, ain't I:D). I have known a LOT of LDS (some who were even on my mission) who appeared to be more concerned with looking the part and, by some of their hypocritical actions, were less concerned with the attitudes of their hearts and minds. This was something that Jesus absolutely slammed the scribes and Pharisees over in Matthew 23! People can judge me all they want for whatever reason and I really don't care. As long as my heart is right with the Lord then it doesn't concern me whatsoever about what any person thinks. According to scripture, it's completely irrelevant. Oh and BTW, I DO think that Jesus still has a beard/long hair. If this isn't the case, then why do we still picture Him as such? Edited September 16, 2009 by Carl62 Quote

Carl62 Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Hmmm amazing how so many youth/singles stake/regional dances play rock and roll.Right on, Pam!!! And anyone care to explain how there are so many people who are in rock bands who are active LDS. This includes the lead singer for The Killers (good band!), two of the guys from Dishwalla (one is a Sunday school teacher), three of the guys from The Aquabats, SheDaisy (more country-rock) and of course, Utah's favorite, The Osmonds!!:) Quote

cougarfan Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 The Osmonds are awesome, but sometimes I think they are a little too worldly in their music. Look at Marie, her daughter is now a Lesbian. Something is just wrong with that family for all the good that they have done. Just my two cents brothers and sisters. Quote

I was at work and started chuckling and reached for the 'Laugh' button but didn't want to use it in a mocking way if you were serious.I'm hoping you aren't. The Osmonds? Seriously? The OSMONDS?You take issue with this song? Donny out there thrusting and shaking his hips. Quote
Dove Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Whatever the issues here now, I sure do appreciate Utahrulzz and Cougarfan for their kind and respectful way of responding, even when they are disagreeing with another poster's comment....So much better than being harsh and derogatory in one's response towards another.... I'm sorry to hear Marie Osmond's daughter chooses to practice homosexuality. How sad! I'm so grateful I have always been comfortable and confident in my choice to be heterosexual....Sad for those who struggle with the issue..... I believe that we all have the right to live the gospel as strictly as we desire to. It's not ours to judge others for the extent they do; but, rather to love and exemplify what has hopefully brought us a fuller joy. I'm learning not judging others, for me, is really an issue of putting my trust in God and letting Him take care of His own sheep more than me calling the shots on how I think others should live; which, to me, crosses so many boundaries. While we want our "light to shine," for me this includes loving others in pointing to the way of living that will bring eternal happiness, rather than grabbing/breaking their arm into living what's mine to live, not theirs.....
