beefche Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Another thread reminded me of some of the best meals I've ever eaten. One place was Lydia's in KC--I had their sampler dinner. Three pasta dishes (chef's choice) with fantastic Italian bread and flavored olive oil and a dessert. Expensive but so very worthy it. The best steak I've ever had was actually made by a friend of mine on his grill. I don't know what that boy did to it, but it was extraordinary. He finally convinced me that eating well done steak was sacrilege--now it's cooked to medium. The best salad I've ever had was in Bulgaria--their shopska salad (village salad). Cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, vinegar, oil, and grated feta cheese--mouth watering! A close second was a Greek restaurant here in Indy--nothing spectacular except for the oilive oil. It was imported from Greece and I just wanted a straw to suck it up--so yummy! Got any meals/restaurants that blew your socks off? Quote

hordak Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I'm a big fan of Quaker Steak and Lube. They are few and far between but have 20 types of wing sauce and one so hot they require you to sign a waver to order it. Seriously Quote
pam Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Best tacos I've ever eaten was off a taco stand on a street in Tijuana, Mexico. Quote
Dravin Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I think the best meals I've had have been at home. I'm not very inclined to go expensive when eating out though which might explain why such is the case. Quote
will227457 Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Pam I assume you live in SD? google: tacos el gordo great tacos in SD.... Quote
pam Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 No I grew up in San Diego. I live in Utah now. I have yet to find a REALLY good Mexican restaurant in Utah. Actually I take that back. There was a pretty good Mexican restaurant in the little town of Delta. But too far to drive just for a meal. It's almost 2 hours away. Quote
sixpacktr Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Pizza: Most anywhere in Buffalo, but a place called Santora's makes the BEST Buffalo Wing Pizza, and great Buffalo Wings with bleu cheese dipping sauce (and I HATE bleu cheese!) Pie: Mayer Brothers here in Buffalo. The BEST pies ever. Greasy spoon: Waffle Huts all across the South. LOVE them. Mexican: Some hotel in Aguascalientes Mexico. Stayed there a couple of times. Japanese: Nearly anyplace in Japan . But in the States, Sapporo Wind in Columbus has great sushi, and HaruIchiban in Atlanta has great 'regular' Japanese food. Quote
pam Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 When I went to Hong Kong I was so anxious to try authentic "chinese food." I was disappointed. It was bland to me. But perhaps because I was so accustomed to the chinese food we are used to eating here in the states. Quote
beefche Posted October 16, 2009 Author Report Posted October 16, 2009 6, is that Columbus OH? Cause Japanese is my fave food and if so, I'll try to look it up next time I go to the temple. Do they have good sushi? Quote
Dravin Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Oh wait, if we can be liberal in what we call great, I've reconsidered and must ad IHOP's chicken fried steak to the list, mass producted, heart attack inducing, blood pressure increasing goodness. Quote
Guest Godless Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 The best steak I've ever had was actually made by a friend of mine on his grill. I don't know what that boy did to it, but it was extraordinary. He finally convinced me that eating well done steak was sacrilege--now it's cooked to medium. When I was working as a cook, it always cracked me up to have servers come up to me and say that their customers wanted their steak well-done and juicy. My reply would always be "Well, I can spit on it if they want it juicy." Personally, I think mid-rare is the only way to go. If it ain't bleedin', it ain't worth eatin'. As of right now, my favorite place to get a steak is Saltgrass Steakhouse here in San Antonio. I just wish I could afford to eat there more often! The best food I've had recently was some 1/2 lb hand-made blue cheese burgers that I found on sale at HEB. I cooked them medium/medium-rare, and they were soooo good!!!!Oh, and there's a local brewpub here that makes some amazing artisan pizzas. I love that place!!! Quote
pam Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 "Well, I can spit on it if they want it juicy." Remind me to never come to a bbq at your house. But then again, juicy wouldn't be a problem. My kids think I'm disgusting in that my steak still bleeds when served. Quote
beefche Posted October 16, 2009 Author Report Posted October 16, 2009 I don't want my steak to get up and walk over to eat my salad. I'm not good with the blood part, but if it's just a LITTLE bloody, I'm ok. Godless, what's HEB? Quote

It's only significant competitor down here is Wal-Mart Supercenter. Quote
ADoyle90815 Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I also would say that the best tacos I've had were in Tijuana, Mexico. I'm about 2 hours north of San Diego, so going to Tijuana isn't that difficult. I'm actually spoiled to the point that I won't eat Mexican food outside of states that are on the Mexican border. My favorite city to eat in has to be New Orleans, since I never had a bad meal there. Japanese: There's a Japanese/Asian market in Torrance, CA where the food court has the best food. Thai: New restaurant down the street from me, the best Thai food I've had. Quote

Do they have good sushi? On Cleveland Ave in Columbus OH. Because of Honda, there are lots of Japanese places there. They also have 2 Japanese foodstores that sell a lot of good stuff. Look on the internet and you'll find where they are.It has been years since I was there, but they had a great spider roll. I forgot to add to mine:Italian: Again, Buffalo absolutely rocks with Italian food. A little place called La Castelana serves the best spaghetti and meatballs (the sauce is absolutely amazing). They are a little place with traditional red/white tablecloths. There is another place my wife and I like as well, called Desiderios close to us. When we leave Buffalo, I will miss the food. Really, really great food. Weather sucks, but the food is great... Quote
Moksha Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Can usually count on Thai and Indian restaurants for something good. Vietnamese is usually good too, if you order what is written in English, unlike myself who tried to be adventurous and ordered something written in Vietnamese that I had no idea what it was. Sea snails definitely should be prepared differently than what came on my plate. Need to be Anthony Bourdain for that stuff. Special shout out to Westside Cottage II on 9th Ave in NYC for having gourmet service and food at a budget price. Another shout out to the shakes at the Iceberg Drive-in at 39th South in SLC. Quote

Dravin Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 It is interesting how we consider authentic to be a badge of honor and deliciousness for food. I think in a lot of cases we don't really want authentic, most people don't order a traditional margarita at a pizza joint, they want something Americanized ( or what ever their home palate is). I know there are plenty of authentic ethnic foods I wouldn't consider good (plenty I would though). And there is for example a lot of Chinese out there that is hardly authentic but is very tasty. Of course on the other hand if you squirt a bottle of ketchup over some noodles and call it spaghetti I'll probably be upset so I can understand people in search of some true *insert dish*. :) Quote
Bini Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 All the best great food is at my house! But when I don't want to cook, I'm pretty happy going out to eat at just about anywhere, especially if it's Italian cuisine! Though, no restaurant matches the mad skills of Mrs. Perilli and her homemade pasta ;] For a quick sandwich, I like the #9 at Jimmy Johns.. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Not sure whether we should put this here or in the horrible food thread. But it intrigues me:Candied Bacon Ice Cream Quote
