James Cameron's Avatar

So this is hands down the best movie I have ever seen. I saw it in 3D, which was awesome, because they invented a new type of camera to better film 3D, as wel as new software to make the CG more realistic.

On top of that, it had a compelling story line and good character development. Some people compared it to the last samurai, because a warrior adopts his enemies beliefs and joins them against his old comrades.

But this had so much more. I was simply awestruck as this movie kept my interest the entire time. The action scenes were amazing, and there were times when you felt as though the action was happening to you (because of the 3D, objects would almost hit you).

I would recomend everyone go see this amazing film.

This has been one movie I haven't been too interested in seeing. My kids have seen it and said it was awesome. My son was trying to explain it to me and then just finally said "Mom you just gotta see it to understand it."

Okay, I was just talking to a friend of mine whose youngest kid is 10-years-old and he said he was uncomfortable in certain parts of the movie because of his kids. I never did get to ask him what was uncomfortable.

I have an 8-year-old and a 6-year-old... Can I bring the kids with me? They REALLY want to see it as they really loved the previews. Can you tell me if you found some parts uncomfortable?

My guess is it stems from the skimpy atire the aliens wear. The alien males wear a loincloth, and the alien females wear a bikini tpye of garment. That said, the bodies are humanoid, but far from sexual in my opinion.

Also, there is a "love scene" between the two main characters, where she is sitting on his lap and they rock back and forth. It is not graphic, but my wife covered the eyes of my 12 year old for this part.

My thoughts exactly. A few more posts like that, Pam, and I may forgive you your heretical opinion regarding Christmas Shoes. :D

Then I will work doubly hard so that I might once again find myself in your good graces.

Here are a couple of movie review sites for parents:

Kids-in-Mind: Movie Ratings That Actually Work (this site gives Avatar a 4/10 for sex/nudity, a 7/10 for violence and gore, and 4/10 for profanity)

Screen It! Entertainment Reviews for Parents (scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "No Thanks" to get into the site)

Another friend on Facebook just posted that they've decided that "Avatar is like Twilight for dudes."

Sounds like better advertising than my Dad was doing. He was going on about how amazing it was supposed to be (we're all going as a family to see it later tonight in 3d) and how the 3d is just so mind blowingly awesome. Want to guess how he tried to communicate that point? I quote, "After the movie people were leaving the theatre nauseated!'

Both me and Mom: *thinking, and saying to each other later* Not exactly the best way to sell a movie there. You've got to see this movie, it'll make you want to puke! :D

*edit* please go to the link that Vort provided if you would like to read the information concerning profanity/sex/nudity provided.

Nah, I don't think I will be exposing myself or my family to that garbage. Thanks anyway, James Cameron.

I didn't realize I was exposing my family to garbage when my kids and I watched National Geographic. Those african tribes - they didn't even have a scrap over their breasts! The pornographic demons!

Sorry, can't resist.

I know what you're saying though.

About a movie he wrote or produced? I find it hard to believe teenage girls were saying that about Terminator 3, so you must be refering to Titanic, which was 12 years ago. Not long ago?

And so now you are comparing me to a teenage girl? Oooo, feel the burn.

James Cameron is one great director. Okay, his evil twin directed Total Recall...

Anyway, what I really admire about the guy is his fearlessness in pushing the technical envelope. He's not content to do the "regular thing". Terminator 2 was one of those things. After that movie, other movies started using the "liquid metal" effect. Titanic was another with the CG work on the sinking of the ship. There's Abyss - the CG alien and then underwater vehicle races. There's Aliens - no words for the awesomeness of that one. And now Avatar. All technical challenges! Pushing Avatar even knowing that not many theaters carry the 3D screen - that's admirable. And I like it that he invokes the human-factor and not just rely on technical display. He even makes it so that we completely forget the technical aspect of the movie - the story rules the day. Could he have made a technically-rich Titanic in under 2 1/2 hours? I'm very sure he could. He would make more money because with the 3-hour movie, theaters will have to have fewer showings. But then the storyline wouldn't be fleshed out properly.

It's different from the brothers who made the Matrix. Now THAT was some movie revolution. Changed the way movies are shot! But, the Matrix sequels show you that they are solely into pushing the technical aspect leaving the story to rot.

George Lucas' Star Wars is another one of those movies that the story ruled over the CG. I'm a huge Star Wars fan...

I don't understand why everybody is giving this bad reviews. "Not going to see it because I don't like science fiction movies." I don't either I took a risk and saw it in 3d. I don't see any other movie ever topping this one unless it's another James Cameron movie. Huge fan of Mr. Cameron. Eventually everyone will see it because it will be a huge blockbuster hit just like Titanic. I felt like I was in the movie. I didn't want the experience to end it didn't feel like 3 hours. One of my favs of all time now.

I watched it yesterday in 3-D IMAX. The imagery was amazing, and the story interesting. The cussing totally went past me--maybe too much time in the joint. As for the story, yeah it was interesting. I caught some enviromentalist messages in the storyline--actually not too subtle, though nobody's mentioned them. IMHO, this movie would deserve a solid A. On the other hand, it's not one that will go down as historic. So, I'd label it "Near-Great." When I heard it cost 1/2 billion to make, I felt better about forking out $15. I'm used to pay $2 at our town's 2nd-run theater. :-)

Relentless, no harm in sticking some subtle politics in a movie...happens all the time. BTW, if I'm reading between the lines correctly, you kinda liked this movie, right?

I don't know PC. I don't think he liked it at all...
