What was that Jesus said that goes something like say ya or nay, anymore then this is evil. Have you wandered what that means?

He was saying it in the context of making oaths. While we might call a curse word an oath it isn't really (at least not the 'four letter' variety), not in the context of the scripture you are talking about. So unless when you stub your toe something like, "I swear by the throne of Heaven that my bowels shall spill upon the ground as water if I fail to exact revenge upon this vile walkway." pops out, the scripture isn't particularly applicable.

Sorry I wasn't very clear. To clarify, I am not referring to netspeak. :P

I just tossed "OMG" up into the subject title because I wasn't sure how appropriate it was to type out "Oh my God". The topic is regarding actually saying the whole phrase and not "Oh Em Gee". Lawls. But to add my two cents to that side topic, I don't necessarily have a problem with "OMG" or any of the other netspeak lingo, though admittedly it can and often does get annoying. Even though I tend to use them on occasion :]

I have always believed taking the lords name in vain (shav) is more about deceitful, and false then anything else.

While it is empty to use the name in a profanity, i think it the commandments purpose is to prevent people from committing empty oaths, or using it in a deceitfully for wrong intent.

E.G. Using religious "hierarchy" or devotion to gain the confidence ("Of course you should invest in my business brother jones, Bishop Smith and Stake President Doe have.") or taking the Priesthood because "chicks dig it" would be more taking the lords name in vain then stubbing your toe and shouting GD it. IMO.

How do you feel about people saying "Oh my God"? Is it ever acceptable? Or is it always inappropriate? Does it depend on one's tone of voice and the context in which it's used?

My parents taught me that saying this is using the Lord's name in vain. So it's just not something I say. And on the rare occasions its slipped my lips, I just didn't feel right about it. But are there ever exceptions to saying it? I know it's pretty common among kids to use it for just about anything. To me, this is without question, using the Lord's name in vain. But I've heard it used in different context as well. I'll hear older people say it when they've heard terrible news and clearly they feel grief. In this case, I feel the words "Oh my God" are used in genuine sincerity and not just a casual saying. And yes, I'm probably overly thinking this but it's always interesting to see what others think :]

i'm always thinking "oh my gosh"....

were I to think of it as taking the lord's name in vain tho ya i would be more against it.

PS I don't use it either way.

I used to say, Hesus-Maria-Hosep (Filipino for Jesus-Mary-Joseph), when I'm in a bind. It's a mini-prayer to ask Jesus, Mary, and Joseph to help me. For example, I'm driving on the freeway and I hydroplane, I would exclaim "Hesus-Maria-Hosep!". I also used to say, Gino-o ko (My God!), when I see something horrible as a mini-prayer to say "Deliver me from this evil". Like when some guy cuts me off on the freeway while yapping on his phone, I would exclaim "Gino-o ko!".

When I got baptized LDS, I don't do it anymore - not because of the first commandment - because I do not intend it to be an empty oath or a swear phrase or some such. But because I was taught to pray properly - Pray to HF in the name of Jesus and all that.

The Spanish word for milk is a swear word where I grew up. The F word is not - we didn't even know what that meant. So, a lot of my cousins say the F-word because it doesn't sound like swearing, yet they avoid saying milk in spanish.

It's easy for me to get in the trap of swearing in my language. Nobody here knows it's swearing. I have to remind myself that just because nobody understood what you said doesn't mean you didn't just swear.

I do not use the Lord's name in vain, when I use it I am totally sincere :D

There isn't much a person can use when moments of surprise/agony/befuddlement come up. I make sure when typing to do an omgoish, a 'goish' being that part of my back that twinges often at unexpected times.

I don't really like the OMG statement. Yahoo has an OMG page, and you know they are not saying oh my gosh. But I don't judge those who use it. I can't read minds. I just personally wouldn't want to say oh my gosh [OMG] and people think I'm promoting that saying oh my "God" is what i might mean to say and is ok. Just my 2 cents.

I tend to say Oh My Gato! I use to be really bad about saying Oh My God all the time but am currently working on it. When I have said oh my god in front of my LDS friends they did kind of give me a look so I really try to watch it.

I don't say it, I will not even type the abbreviation. There are so many other things you can say that do not use God's name in vain, or are not inappropriate or crass.

I consider the Lord's name very sacred and I never use the phrase "O my ***." I don't even like the word gosh because sometimes it does sound like you are breaking the commandment to keep the name of the Lord sacred. When I do hear people say the phrase I sigh within myself because God's name and any reference to it should be taken with care.

"TGIF" really bothers me as well because it is refering to the Lord in a casual way.
