I dont know if this has been asked before but anyways. When you join the church you get the aeronic priesthood. how long does it take to get the malechezdic priesthood?

let me further explain, I heard somewhere it takes 1 year. Now if that is true, is it one year of active membership? because I first joined the church in may 05 I was there for a while and I dont remember if i was there for a year. today was my first day back. so if anyone can help out I would appreciate it. I was going to ask at church but I forgot.

Thanks

I think there's some instruction in the CHI about this (six months or a year, IIRC); but in my mission we had such a dearth of Melchizedek Priesthood holders that it was common to ordain converts to the Melchizedek Priesthood after three weeks.

(This was ten years ago, in a third-world nation. Your mileage may vary.)

It can occur as early as 3 months after receiving the Aaronic Priesthood. The bishop is the one who determines whether a person is ready or not. Some bishops still wait an entire year, however the Church is seeking to change this, as it limits the opportunities and blessings of men in their first year. Also, it means they do not get a chance to learn to use the MP, prior to also being ready to enter into the temple for one's endowment.

technically there isn't a set time that has been put into cement... but bishops and leaders are told to wait a certain amount of time for certain things to make sure that an individual is ready and shows some dedication.

I can't remember if aaronic priesthood was a year, but I think a year's wait is what is recommended for the Melchezidek priesthood and Going to the temple.

My husband was wondering the same thing. He was supposed to be ordained into the aeronic priesthood this past Sunday, but I was very sick and we stayed home.He is supposed to be this Sunday and he wondered how long it takes to get to be into the malechezdic priesthood.

I was asking one of our sisters and she said to talk to our Bishop and see how long he thinks.

Sometimes (from personal experience) you can just be forgotten about because they just assume you have already been ordained years before. If you don't speak up, it might take a change of Bishoprics to get on top of records and status.

In the meantime, they will still like you to set up and take down the chairs.

Just 3 months minimum Brother. Usually when a District or Stake conference is coming in 3 months after you were ordained a Priest in the Aaronic Priesthood. In the conference you will be sustained by the members as one receiving the Melchizedek Priesthood. I hope you get to be ordained an Elder real soon!:)

Age is the first factor. It is 18 for active military or 19 for those who will serve a mission. If married and under 19, they will be considered a prospective elder. Four basic keys here that you may need to answer yourself;

Worthiness. Your Bishop will have a list of those potential prospective elders. Interviews are handled on a regular basis with those are considered prospective elders. Are you truly worth to obtain the priesthood? Discarding the notion of being totally perfect, are you striving for perfection? There are 14-questions that are required to be answered when being interview by a Bishop and the Stake President.

Understanding the responsibility of the Priesthood. (See D&C 68, 84, 107, 121, 124, 128, 132) Learn these sections.

Spiritual Maturity. Beside knowing the responsibility of both priesthood, the gospel should be the center of your life and be a daily driven force. You should by now, have regulars prayers, daily scripture study, and [applying what is learn] changing old bad habits with those the Savior exemplified as a traits of righteous man.

Applying the Priesthood. You need to use the priesthood by action and not a simple ‘doormat.’ When there is opportunity in using the priesthood, take the imitative in applying yourself. This is a demonstration on your behalf; it is not a ‘doormat’ (never applying oneself in the priesthood)

Usually, the determining factors for most wards is usually done by the area president and then pass down by the Stake President [or could be done by the Stake President as to length] as to the length of priesthood waiting process. For my area, it is a 6-month or circumstance where the Spirit may override this factor. Many years ago, in Hawaii, it was one-year and being involve in the Aaronic priesthood was required.

When you finally received the Melchezidek Priesthood, you next goal is preparing yourself to receive your own Temple endowments.
