mliff Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I dont know if this has been asked before but anyways. When you join the church you get the aeronic priesthood. how long does it take to get the malechezdic priesthood? let me further explain, I heard somewhere it takes 1 year. Now if that is true, is it one year of active membership? because I first joined the church in may 05 I was there for a while and I dont remember if i was there for a year. today was my first day back. so if anyone can help out I would appreciate it. I was going to ask at church but I forgot. Thanks Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I think there's some instruction in the CHI about this (six months or a year, IIRC); but in my mission we had such a dearth of Melchizedek Priesthood holders that it was common to ordain converts to the Melchizedek Priesthood after three weeks. (This was ten years ago, in a third-world nation. Your mileage may vary.) Quote
mliff Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 thanks, ill look into it some more. Im just curious about it, it feels a little weird asking about it, to me sounds a little selfish i guess. since i havent been there a while. Quote
rameumptom Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 It can occur as early as 3 months after receiving the Aaronic Priesthood. The bishop is the one who determines whether a person is ready or not. Some bishops still wait an entire year, however the Church is seeking to change this, as it limits the opportunities and blessings of men in their first year. Also, it means they do not get a chance to learn to use the MP, prior to also being ready to enter into the temple for one's endowment. Quote
mliff Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 ok thanks, I guess ill just have to wait and see when my bishop decides lol. Quote

john doe Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Talk to your bishop and tell him you want to work toward holding the Melchezidek Priesthood and ask him what you need to do to make that happen. Quote
mliff Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 ok thanks ill talk to him this coming sunday. I might call the elders and talk to them also Quote
mormonwifey Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 My husband was wondering the same thing. He was supposed to be ordained into the aeronic priesthood this past Sunday, but I was very sick and we stayed home.He is supposed to be this Sunday and he wondered how long it takes to get to be into the malechezdic priesthood. I was asking one of our sisters and she said to talk to our Bishop and see how long he thinks. Quote
Moksha Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 It can occur as early as 3 months after receiving the Aaronic Priesthood. Sometimes (from personal experience) you can just be forgotten about because they just assume you have already been ordained years before. If you don't speak up, it might take a change of Bishoprics to get on top of records and status. In the meantime, they will still like you to set up and take down the chairs. Quote

Usually when a District or Stake conference is coming in 3 months after you were ordained a Priest in the Aaronic Priesthood. In the conference you will be sustained by the members as one receiving the Melchizedek Priesthood. I hope you get to be ordained an Elder real soon!:) Quote

For my area, it is a 6-month or circumstance where the Spirit may override this factor. Many years ago, in Hawaii, it was one-year and being involve in the Aaronic priesthood was required.
