Wingnut Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I think you mean bfd. Big - - - - - - - deal. There's an acronym for just about everything out there. I didn't know BFE until someone mentioned it on this thread. If you want to know what it is, look it up on Urban Dictionary. Fair warning: it's got the same offensive word in it as BFD. Quote

FunkyTown Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I have read on facebook on two different profiles the person labeling the person they are pictured with, or have gone to lunch/dinner/concert with as BFF. According to this site: Text Messaging, Chat Abbreviations and Smiley Faces - Webopedia that means Best Friends Forever. Why not just use BF? or BFE (Best Friend EVER)?? I can understand if the person using BFF is under the age of 15- but both people were well over the age of 30, and gramatically knew better. Best Friend Ever- would be more appropriate. Guess I am just dumb when it comes to text speak. Iggy - OMG! Ur <>l33t. idk y u dunno wat dis means. My bff needs t^4y. Den ull know dat dis txt iz kewl. Quote

beefche Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 In my job, we use abbreviations all the time. Some are widely used, some are unique to our company. A couple of such abbreviations is "follow up" = fu, f/u, fup and "check" = ck. One of the good Christian women left me a note once using a combination of the previous two abbreviations without realizing what it spelled. I laughed so hard when I realized she wasn't cursing at me, but letting me know what she wanted to do on a particular claim. She was quite embarrassed when I pointed it out to her. Quote

Suzanne627 Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 I think you mean bfd. Big - - - - - - - deal. (edit) Nope you didn't, Bum - - - - egypt. Had a customer who said that all the time, not in initial form- I finally 86'd (banned) him forever. Got tired of his foul mouth.I always thought the the F in BFD was for "flipping". That is what my non-LDS mother always said. What line of work are you in? Quote
Iggy Posted December 2, 2010 Author Report Posted December 2, 2010 I always thought the the F in BFD was for "flipping". That is what my non-LDS mother always said. What line of work are you in? A hundred years ago <1980-1985> when I was really inactive, I owned a tavern. From 1985 to 1999 I worked cocktailing/bartending on holiday weekends and the rest of the time in a hardware store. All in the same town. Truck drivers, contractors, loggers, fishermen, gas station attendents/gas jockeys, etc. By and large the 'working' (as in manual, physical labor working ) people had a 'colorful' language. BFD was pretty much the only thing they did say in shorthand. The rest was sounded out, and used way too frequently. For the last five years I have been working for an independent Insurance Agent. Yeah, Beefche, the first time she left me a post-it note with "fu", I nearly broke down crying. I was alone in the office, hadn't been there for even a week, and I thought- "Oh My Lord--she cusses via posties." Quote
