lizzy16 Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 (edited) Or, do I just let life take its course? For example, if perhaps one is told they'll learn a language and understand it. Should that person start trying to learn that language by taking classes ect. Or should they wait and just let life take its course? I just realized this is in the wrong section. Sorry!! rameumptom Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 You follow the Holy Spirit as it guides you. Then, as you listen to the Spirit, it will naturally enfold in your life. Quote
Dravin Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Not sure if this better belong in LDS Gospel Discussion or in Advice, but since there is a underlying gospel principle question I opted for former. Quote
Backroads Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Hmm... self-fulfilling prophecy... it's an interesting notion. If we go out of our way to make things happen, it's easy to criticize and say it was us. It seems that these are blessings we will have if we live righteously, so obviously we can't stray from the path and expect to get these things by "letting life takes its course". But perhaps some of the things in our blessings are very good advice, things for which we should strive. I know I explored certain bits of life because of my blessing. Quote
Dravin Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Sometimes the line isn't clear. Let's say one is called to a non-English mission. If you are righteous in fulfilling your calling you'll do your best to learn the language. Now you know a second language, did you seek this out (arguably if you'd not applied any effort, no learning) or did life take it's course? Quote
estradling75 Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Its a balancing act. You don't want to be the guy on his roof during a flood that turns down the chances of rescue because 'God would Save him' only to find out in the after life that god sent the rescuers and he didn't take the chance that he had to be rescued. On the other hand you also don't want to be the person who reads everything that happens as a sign that you need to do something to fulfill the blessing, because not everything that looks like an opportunity is going to be one or the one the Lord has planned for you. You need to walk the middle road between the two extremes. You need to be living in harmony with the gospel so that the spirit can be with you to guide your path on when you should act in the fulfilling of the blessings Quote
applepansy Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 My answer is Yes! If its specific I don't see the problem. My younger sister's PB was very specific. She was very young when she got it. She insisted she wanted to get it done. My mom was worried that she was too young. She talked to the Patriarch who said if my sister continued to be adamant about having the blessing to bring her in. I think she was about 10 yos. She was given very specific career advice which has proven to be huge blessing, in her life and the lives of her children. Quote

Gwen Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Take a different example. If your blessing says you will marry in the temple you can't assume it was promised and not do anything. If you only date non members you won't marry in the temple. If you don't keep yourself temple worthy you won't marry in the temple. So yes you should "do" something to help it to happen, you need to prepare yourself to receive the blessing. Nearly every blessing I've ever read (though not that many) say somewhere in it that all these things are contingent upon living the gospel. The point in having the blessing is to guide you in planning your life. If you just let things "take their course" then you aren't keeping that counsel. Quote

Seminarysnoozer Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I agree with all the answers already given. The blessing can be a road map of what God expects out of us in this life and so those things should be pursued. Just realize it may not come about the way you thought it would. Sometimes God makes it happen in an unexpected way. So, we should be prepared for those things as best we can and keep ourselves in circumstances and a level of worthiness which makes it possible. pam Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 Mine has VERY specific promises to VERY specific things I should do and follow. In that case, yes you should follow those. My PB is not general at all. If I ever had any doubts before I got mine as to whether it comes from Heavenly Father, all doubts were erased. There was something mentioned in mine that there is NO way that the patriarch would have personally known about me. Quote
