Eenie, meenie, mynie, moe

We always said 'tiger.' It wasn't until I went to college that some bright light forgot who was in the room and said the N word. I was shocked and she, and everyone else, was embarrassed.

I don't believe I ever heard that version, even as an adult. I think one day I was ruminating about the ditty, and I just sort of realized what the word "pigger" must be a substitute for. Kind of a dawning awareness -- "Oooooooooh, I bet THAT's why."

The version I learned was slightly different than Vorts. Ours was:

Eenie meenie mynie moe

Catch a tiger by its toe

If he hollers let him go

Eenie meenie mynie moe

My mother told me to pick the very best one and you are not IT!

It was not 'pigger' but it did rhyme with it when I learned it in the 60's

Same here, and I grew up in Canada. As a kid I had no idea what the word meant or that it was disrespectful. My version is:

Eenie, meenie, mynie, moe,

Catch a *igger by the toe.

If he hollers, let him go

Catch him by the other toe.

My mother said to pick the very best one,

Peach, pear, bubble-gum!

We taught our kids to use "tiger".
