I've been talking to a couple of my friends on facebook and both have lived in AZ for 20+ years and they have never seen anything like it.

They were just talking about it on the news and they said it was 50 miles wide.

I grew up in Chandler. I can remember a few of these dust storms when I was a kid. The worst one that I remember pitted windows and sandblasted the paint off cars.

Needless to say, I would not drive into a haboob. We were taught to stop under an overpass or near a large structure and stay in the car.

It'll take a long time to clean up all the dust. It sifts into everything through the tiniest cracks. I can still remember how the dust smells even though I haven't lived down there in a long time.

Oh, that is so not true, yes it happens. Not every year, but it happens. Happened while I was living there. I had to stay at work for an additional 3 hours before I could even venture home, because of one.

It started south of Casa Grande and ended up Northwest of Phoenix! Oh, by the way, I left Casa Grande (50 miles south of Phoenix) in Nov of 2010.

Dust storms during the monsoon season are normal, and nearly daily. First the horrendous winds of dust, then comes the deluge of rain, then you wade through hot grimy water to get to your car. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt to remind me to NEVER go there again.

I messaged my brother who lives in Queen Creek to see how they were doing post-storm. He said they suffered some damage, mostly just have mess to clean up today. He said "Landscapers are running around like ants this morning." Guess the cloud had a silver lining for the local landscape industry anyway. lol.

INSANE!

That's crazy. That was huge. I don't think I'm ever moving to Arizona. Is that normal?

It is very normal for Arizona this time of year. I am 25 and have lived in Arizona all my life. This one was larger than normal but it happens EVERY monsoon season. This is about as exciting as our weather gets here. Oh and rain :)

Finally found what month and year the one I experienced was in:

Huge 'Wall of dust' covers Arizona valley June of 2006.

It preceded a storm dropping a quarter-inch of much needed rain in Tucson, giving it the day’s record of rainfall.

An entire quarter of an inch of rain? Like, six or seven millimeters? In a single day?

Outrageous.

Note to self...tell my friends they are liars. They just said they had never seen anything like the one yesterday not that they had never seen a dust storm there. :P

Pam, where in AZ are they? Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe then south towards Tucson is a dust bowl. If your friends lived in Northern AZ then there are the mountains and trees and no dust.

Depends on where they live. I never, NEVER called them liars. :P:o:confused:

Now did you not see the smiley face at the end of my post.

They both live in Mesa.

usually not.. but it is desert area, plenty of sand and dust around, get the right conditions and this can happen.
