Cayman Islands Tax Havens

How many here have been to the Cayman Islands to see the military defenses they have? War with Cayman Islands, really?

A legal business by US standards, by Cayman standards and we send Marines to take their records?

Almost all money transactions go through US banks before they go anywhere else in the world. Swift transfer. Wire transfers of funds almost always to through Chase or Citibank first.

US can cut off transfers of funds in and out of Cayman Islands very easily by denying transfers.

What about Switzerland? They have a much longer history of secrecy and hiding ownership of funds.

Lets attack Switzerland too and Nevis and Isle of Man. Oh wait it was only Cayman Islands that they made that movie "The Firm" about so it must be a criminal place.

Plenty of sarcasm here.

Isn't the British military in charge of the Cayman Islands defense? I'm pretty sure the USA isn't planning on waging war on one of their closest allies any time soon. Plus, we may be small, but our bite can be pretty nasty ;)

We're fresh out of Andrew Jacksons too.

War for the good causes = good. War for the bad causes = bad.

Just think, this country had a revolution simply because some businessmen did not want to pay a TAX to the king in England. The south went to war to keep their slave workers.

And that was a good cause for war?

It wasnt accurate either. The slave issue was more to gain public support. States rights were more the issue. Seems cotton trade was in there too.

Just responding to Hoosierguys reasoning they went to war.

Yes, Switzerland too. I don't like how the media has given that country a pass. They claim to be this peaceful "neutral" country and yet they let corrupt people hide money in thier banks. Disgusting. At least they is how they once were. I don't know if they have changed any.

Of course the best and peaceful way to change things is to change U.S. law. But even so, American corporations and people who hide their money down there should be ashamed of themselves. If they want to hide their money down there then why stay in the U.S. to begin with? If the U.S. is not good enough for their money then why is it good enough for them to stay in?

Law abiding citizens do not "hide" their money in Cayman Islands. They use US Tax Code to shelter money. Sure there is illegal money laundering going on in Cayman Islands and many other places in the world. Even in the US.

US Tax Code says you must report all income. If you find a great deal on a car. Buy it for $100 and put $100 dollars in to it to fix it up and sell it for $2,000 dollars cash, by US Tax Code you must report the $1,800 gain. It done within one year it is taxed as ordinary income. If you hold it for 12 months and one day it is capital gains income.

How about garage sale stuff. Great underground economy. All transactions for more than you paid for it are gains. Gifts given to you and then sold are gains too.

Do you report all that income on your taxes?

Perhaps it is only the wealthy that should be attacked and criminalized. I mean all the rest is the American Way.

Again much sarcasm here.

If you don't like Switzerland, then you don't like Swiss Miss. Do you really want to be known for disliking Swiss Miss?

Also, it's not "hiding" money when you're putting it somewhere legally.

Did you just say to wage war against Switzerland? Okay, re-read the Treaty of Paris in 1815 most especially pertaining the Congress of Vienna, and then re-read the Hague Convention of 1907 sections 5 and 13.

Sorry, you can't use Switzerland in your class warfare. Find somebody else more willing to engage you with that.

I'm not American, yet I stay in America. Why? Lots of money to be made in America. For some insane reason, only Americans think America is a bad place for poor people.

America is, of course, a very good place for their money - I mean, the richest of the rich spend tons of money buying American stuff - they don't feel the need to buy their medicines from Canada when the best medicines can be bought with their oodles of money stateside. They don't feel the need to jump the border to buy their tablets - Apple sells the best of them stateside. They got giant mansions stateside using American labor and materials. They buy their Boeing personal jets stateside, they patronize the priciest of American restaurants here too. I mean - these people don't walk into Walmart and buy Made In China piece of crap. And everytime they dump $10 Million on a Boeing personal jet, they dump $750,000.00 in sales taxes and luxury fees straight to the government.

Yep, they have bank accounts in Switzerland, Cayman, Sweden, etc. No, not because America is not good enough for their money - it's because, like every single tax-paying person in America - they don't want to give their money to the government unless they really have to. Of course, those who don't pay a single penny in taxes may not know what that means.

I dunno. As I think about Hoosier's posts on this thread, something occurs to me. With his newly-expressed fervor to wage war based on some standard that makes sense to him, he moves closer to my side of the political fence. If he continues to think, learn, and grow on the subject of justified warfare, I predict he and I will be voting for the same political candidates maybe as early as 2016.

The Cayman Islands has a reputation for money laundering and other criminal activities within banking circles.

That doesn't mean that all activities in the Cayman Islands are illegal... but it is a "red flag" for US-based financial institutions.

Yeah, New York City, Chicago, and Boston all have similar reputations....to name a few. Why take your money off shore? We have plenty of corruption right here in U.S.!

I propose everybody gets an appropriate sized mayonnaise jar and buries their savings in their own back yard! You only get interest if the planted money somehow grows into a money tree. Those proceeds are, of course, tax free!

Show me a person who does not pay taxes, directly or indirectly in this country? I will point out that person is dead.

You can not buy a loaf of bread without paying taxes. Every single step of the way to your table that bread has been taxed over and over, from the land bought to grow the wheat on up to the gas you use to take it home. You pay it when you buy the bread. Every single tax on that bread is passed onto the consumer, that's you unless you are dead.

It is so annoying to hear this crap about poor and midddle class people not paying taxes, over and over, from people who never take the time to figure even basic taxes out.

Hoosier you are way over the top... wow.

Let me say that I own a business and though I am not remotely close to being a millionaire if I was and there were loopholes I certainly would use them! Considering that I hire people and feed money into the economy I think I deserve that much.

Like previously said if the US wanted to stop funds being transferred overseas they could do it with one switch. I think you're focus is in the wrong place. Finally why such anger towards the rich business man... is it not he who provides most of us an opportunity to be employed?

Point taken.

But, when people say "not paying taxes" they usually mean Personal Income Taxes... especially in the context I used where you can finagle a way to lessen your tax burden. You can't finagle your way out of paying sales tax.

Unfortunately, when people say, "Warren Buffet pays lesser taxes than his secretary", they don't make the distinction between capital gains tax and income tax, let alone sales tax.

So, what is annoying for me is people using taxes in whatever capacity as bullets in the ongoing class warfare... and they're usually not honest about it, knowingly or unknowingly (most people just do a regurgitation of media sound bites).

Since there is only one of the current candidates for Pres., that has been a lawmaker, --- then we don't point fingers at the others?

I was looking the other day at international news, reading that in Italy now, they are limiting peoples ability to use their OWN money in banks. Scary!

I think the "not all the eggs in one basket" is a pretty good idea if we look at the big picture! I don't like that banks are getting bigger and bigger and how they treat people. I sure wish there was a credit union we could use in this little town instead! -- It would be overwhelming to have enough money to use the Cayman Islands for what small amount I have to deal with. (I think better in smaller numbers!)
