Just wondering. one site while it is working, seems to hang when logging in. If anyone here cares to try and see if they can log in msg me if I cannot bring up the site in discussion. The site has the same strict rules as this one.

The short form of the rules for this site seem to be: (1) Don't badmouth the Church or its leaders, and (2) don't be a complete jerk (and try to keep any partial jerkitude to a reasonable level). Those just don't seem all that strict to me.

As for mentioning other sites here: Maybe Pam's really the jealous type, but I somehow doubt anyone would get overly upset by other sites being mentioned. The powers that be might take a dim view of talking bad about other sites, or talking about sites that are anti-Mormon in nature.

I have no authority to respond, of course. I'm only doing so because no one with any actual knowledge has seen fit to respond.

Depends on what sites you want to discuss. Vort is correct. There are certain sites that would be a no brainer to discuss here.

To kind of expand on a point that Vort brought out, if you come here to bad mouth another site and/or their rules and moderating, you will be asked to take that up with the administrator of that site.

Since you haven't mentioned a particular site you are wondering about discussing, it's hard to give an opinion. If you are unsure about talking about a particular site, pm me.

I go to LDS Chat Home Page on occasion. But for two weeks now, seems the login is stuck in a never ending transition period with a rotating arrow. I was wondering, is it my browser having issues? Not sure. Generally it shows chat channels, but I never get to that point.

I just went to it and it did the same thing. So they must be having issues.

I didn't even know that site was still around. Haven't been to it since I got banned a few years ago from there.

There was a forum about medications. Don't remember exactly what it pertained to it was so long ago. But instead of using the word medication I used the word drug. I guess that was a HUGE no no during those days and I got banned. First day on the site too.

I guess I should have read the site rules better. :)

Wow. That sounds pretty insane.

Specifically, she wrote:

"If my ADHD son was actin' up on Sunday, I wouldn't 'a bothered givin' him his medication, I woulda just drug him to Church."

Turns out they weren't big on tough love.

Same thing happened to me, about 6 or 7 years ago. I used the phrase "Tom, **** and Harry", which, at least here, is commonly used to refer to generic people. I got banned 5 minutes later, presumably because the one name raised a flag, and I got banned without them even checking the actual message.

I think "context" is something not in the vocabulary of the moderators in that place.

Heaven forbid your name should be Richard and that's what they call you as a nickname. :)

The date that we had the most people come to this site was the day President Hinckley died. It was also the day that ldschat went down for 2 weeks. :) We got all of their people for the 2 weeks. That was a bit of a hmmm....uhhhh....nightmare.

I would not have worried about a ban if it was a accident. There are some pretty interesting people on there who work for a living. One in particular, is a php/web developer and just had a kid. Wanted to say hi to him and the others. Another member lives in Idaho and makes and sells hot rods for a living. I learned a good deal about Idaho. Seems the ideal place to live since wages are in line with house mortgages.

Its just a site that kind of beets the boredom and see what others are up to. I imagine the site is pretty old but the people are interesting.

Oh I'm sure it wasn't on purpose, but it'd be nice if they actually tried to check the context rather than banning due to the usage of a banned word :P I wasn't worried about it though, I just never had any desire to go back. Plus I'm aware of some of the owners previous activities (going some years back), which I don't morally agree with.

If this site replaces '****' with four asterisks, what do you do if your real life name is ****? ;)

I was banned similarly for using the word 'Cocker Spaniel'.

It came out as ****** Spaniel. I then said "What? ****** Spaniel is a curse word? Heaven forbid I say **** Tracy, then.'

I was banned shortly after.

Testing testing 1 2 3...

Morg

Tom, ****, and Harry

Just wanted to do an experiment and see if 'Morg' got censored here. Apparently not! It does at another site I post at, but you can write 'Tom, ****, and Harry' over there and not get it bleeped.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming... ;)

I like beets. Especially pickled ones.

If they want to have a automatic ban process for someone that trips over the word filter that is their right... It seems a bit harsh to me, but I know I'd really love an automatic spammer banner so I can also understand to have more automation and less work.

Here we have a simple pattern recognition for questionable words... Its not context sensitive at all. This creates some problems with more common uses of the words. Like talking about the comic book, and movie character Dick Tracy, or the breed of dog known as Cocker Spaniel and others, but we put up with it because its a more trivial annoyance to what it blocks.

The filter however doesn't decide (nor protect) someone from getting banned or infracted for swearing, that is a judgement call made by the mods based on context. Even if you are creative or clever enough to get pass the filter the post is going to be judged on if you broke the rule or you were just trying to have a conversation and the filter was being annoying.
