Carl62 Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 You sound astounded at such news. Why is that?Where did I sound "astounded"? It was just a mere question. Quote
beefche Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 The wording of your question sounded as if you are surprised by such a concept. Quote

Leah Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 So am I to understand that there really is no right or wrong as to when, where or how often you wear your garments, and that it's all up to your own personal discretion?Well, there is specific guidance given. Some people choose to forget that part, though. Quote
Vort Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 So am I to understand that there really is no right or wrong as to when, where or how often you wear your garments, and that it's all up to your own personal discretion?I suppose everything in the gospel is like this. We are given counsel and direction, then we are expected to live by what we've been taught. It's almost as if, I don't know, we are taught correct principles and then expected to govern ourselves. Carl62 Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 So let me see if I got this right. There is specific direction and guidance given, but there is no right or wrong to that and we are still given our own personal discretion as to what we want to do at the end of the day? Just trying to understand this. Quote

Just trying to understand this.Of course "we are still given our own personal discretion as to what we want to do". It is given us to choose our way. But there are consequences for disobedience which cannot be avoided. Quote

Just trying to understand this.Yes, Carl...at the end of the day we all have our agency. We get to choose. There are specific guidelines regarding garments. The questions asked at every temple recommend interview is: do you wear the garment day and night?" (I don't remember the exact words. I'll edit after my next recommend interview :) ) Someday we'll be held accountable for how we answer that question and for how/when we wear the garment. As for stained garments. My husband works in construction. If he was worried about stained garments and decided to take them off because they might get stained he wouldn't be wearing garments at all. I like the idea of having a pair of garments set aside for paint ball, or other sports. My husband is just the opposite. He has a pair set aside (which aren't stained from work) for when we attend the temple. He has a few which are less stained set aside for Sunday. One final comment on the humour in this thread: ROFLMSO Quote

Just trying to understand this.Yup. It's called Free Agency. There still is right and wrong to all incidents, including when and where to wear garments. We are commanded to wear them "night and day" yet everyone has their own interpretation of that. Most people, as far as I'm aware, don't shower or fulfill certain duties of marriage with them on. Lots of people don't wear them during certain sports. To give you an example, I enjoy swimming and going to the lake. Due to the places I usually go to, changing when I get there in order to remain in garments as long as possible really isn't practical... so I put on my swimsuit, a pair of shorts, and head to the lake. I don't consider myself avoiding the garment. I imagine that's similar to what this stake president's wife did. Quote

Leah Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Well, yes of course. We are not brainwashed zombies walking around saying with robotic voice "Your wish is my command" "Your wish is my command".Deciding to follow specific direction and counsel given by the Church makes one a "brainwashed zombie"? Gee, and I thought choosing obedience was also part of our free agency. Quote

My reply was to:and we are still given our own personal discretion as to what we want to do at the end of the day?Of course we are given personal discretion to do what we want to do at any point. Are our leaders with a stick in hand forcing us to do what they tell us or else? I surely don't feel forced. The process seem quite simple to me: Listening to counsel, ponder it in your heart, pray about it and receive confirmation from the Holy Ghost. We don't follow blindly (at least I hope a lot of us don't) hence my zombie comment. Quote
Goodwin Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 I totally agree with Vort (page 2). I have had garments stained by all sort of stuff you can imagine, since I love cars, food, outdoors, dogs, little children, and used to love my ex wife XD. Getting clothes stained is just part of life, and that includes underwear, so I think it's a good idea to have a "paintballing garment". But if you still feel uncomfortable ¿why don't you try airsoft? This allows you to play war without getting your garments stained. Quote
Eleven Posted July 16, 2012 Author Report Posted July 16, 2012 Lol Im extremely surprised this thread is still alive. To answer the last statement, simply google "airsoft injuries" and it should answer your question entirely. I'd take bruises and welts any day over missing teeth, chipped teeth, broken skin, swollen knuckles.. and buying new lenses every time i get shot in the mask. You'd be replacing paint with blood lol. As for our decision in case anyone is wondering, we decided to leave the garments folded and waiting for us on the bed when we got home. Just as everyone has said, we are taught the doctrine and expected to use our best judgement, and to me, body oils.. sweat stains.. etc are normal wear and tear per say. But me purposely and unnaturally staining them with paint just urks me. Some paintballers can get around it, more layers.. different paint ( some have the texture of ground down chalk and water, others is just an ooze. the ooze is the one that stains the worst and never dries) but i cant control what paint someone else shoots at me and your friends must be having better luck than I, but Im wearing military issue camo and its still gets through my layers. Staining them on construction jobs.. automotive jobs.. etc to me is in the same category of working on the sabbath, sometimes you cant get around it and you have to fulfill your duties and do your best. But sport and work to me are different categories. Again this is entirely my opinion and am not forcing or trying to convince anyone. I am just doing my best to keep my garments as white as i can. Just throwing a drop in the water bucket. Quote
unixknight Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 I used to play paintball and I always wore them, but that was mainly because I just really WANTED to. It's been awhile so maybe the formula in the paint has changed, but I never had any trouble washing it out of my clothes, so I'm a little confused about why stains would be an issue. Quote
Eleven Posted July 16, 2012 Author Report Posted July 16, 2012 It most definitely does.. I go paintballing with guns with friends and slingshot paintballing with some of my young men in the ward. no matter how fast that thing is coming at you, the paint just seeps through if it breaks. Quote
Backroads Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 I can't stand airsoft. It really hurts. I'll take a blast from a paintball any day. Quote

I just meant that I never had trouble washing it out. Maybe the paint formula has changed over the years? I haven't been since about 2001. Quote
Goodwin Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Eleven OK. With paintball you get garments paint-stained, and with airsoft you get garments blood-stained. Therefore, in order to make the best decision I think you should stain a garment with paint, and stain another garment with blood. Then put them in the washer to see wich one is harder to remove blood or paint. just kidding I didn't know about injuries caused by airsoft, but if I ever want to play war, I think airsoft is for me ........................... Rambo is my last name Quote
