prisonchaplain Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 Now, now JAG...so cynical. We discussed national debt and landed into the intricacies of a flat income vs. consumption tax...what makes you think we can't handle this? :-) Quote

It was good for my spiritual well-being Quote
Wingnut Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 1) Polygamy & extermination order2) "Magic Underwear"3) Temple Rituals4) Mormon Missionaries & why we marry so youngBesides the fact that Glenn Beck is the last member of the Church I can think of from whom I want non-members learning about the Church, these are the topics he addresses? They're so tangential! I wish that someday, a prominent member of the Church would actually talk about our actual beliefs, and not our oddities. Quote
applepansy Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 All the videos worked except the one about the temple. I think he did a good job addressing our oddities. There are still too many people who think we are polygamists (thank you MSN and other media). Wingnut, I too would like a prominent member to talk about our actual beliefs but wait... they do. Twice a year. I don't see MSN, ABC, NBC or CNN at Conference. Quote

applepansy Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 You know what I mean.Yes I know what you mean. :)But I'm also a little bit serious. The media isn't going to report on how normal we are. They are going to look for people like Abby Huntsman. LOL Quote

The fact that it's local programming is beside the point. Okay I was trying to stretch this a bit. hahaha Quote
Echo2002 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 That's what people get hung up on is the oddities of the church and what was done in the past. If everyone talked about how normal we were there wouldn't be any reason to hate us. I used to like Glenn Beck when he only had his radio show, but now he's become very annoying. Quote
Backroads Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 (edited) Besides the fact that Glenn Beck is the last member of the Church I can think of from whom I want non-members learning about the Church, these are the topics he addresses? I think THAT would help people understand us more than any defense. Even all the helpful explanations about our weirdness just contributes to the fascination on those things. selek Posted September 15, 2012 Report Posted September 15, 2012 I reviewed the videos and found them to be adequate, though his schtick was a bit annoying. He covered the topics he did specifically because those were the most popular questions among those submitted. Except for some historical inaccuracies vis-a-vis the rationale and reasons for polygamy, he managed (in my opinion) to frame these issues in a common sense, non-alarmist manner. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted September 15, 2012 Report Posted September 15, 2012 LDS get a lot more critical attention then us traditionalists. However, when non-Christians ask us about our faith they often want to know about the difficulties, not the basics of what we believe and how we live our lives. 1. What about the Crusades? 2. Do you really believe you eat Jesus at Communion? 3. Specific to my denomination: If your religion is so great what about those two televangelists (circa 1980s)? 4. Isn't speaking in tongues weird, fake, demonic, etc.? 5. Why do your preachers blow on people and they fall over? The better questions, though often still offered with hostility: 1. Why do bad things happen to good people? 2. Why do children get raped? 3. What about crack babies? 4. Why did God order the slaughter of civilizations in the Old Testament? I could go on and on. The reality is people often ask questions as a way of dismissing and mocking. Sometimes they really are curious. Other times, they may become curious when we offer a Spirit-directed answer. Quite frequently the oddity question is a gateway to the real question. We cannot help someone with their deeper problems until we address their felt needs--even if that means answering questions about polygamy and Mountain Meadows. Quote
