chelsie6149 Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 one of my friends says that her bishop is 23 could it be possible that a 23 year old male is the bishop of a singles ward? Quote
Guest Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Or a bishop of a regular ward. Unlikely, but possible. President Monson was 22 when he became a bishop. Quote
pam Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 A guy I grew up with was called to be a Stake President at the age of 27. So it can happen. Quote
Guest Doctrine Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 sure as long as he is married. I was only 24 when I was called to join the high priest. Quote
Traveler Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 one of my friends says that her bishop is 23 could it be possible that a 23 year old male is the bishop of a singles ward? Joseph Smith was younger when he was made an Apostle and Jesus was not much older when he became the redeemer of all mankind. However there is a requirement that a Bishop be married. Another possibility is that even thought the single’s ward is called a ward - in reality it may be a branch??? And thus it would be a branch president rather than a bishop - and many times 19 year old missionaries are called as branch presidents. The Traveler Quote
chelsie6149 Posted October 23, 2012 Author Report Posted October 23, 2012 He is not married and when i used lds.org to find his ward he doesnt exist it seems fishy to me but she insists its true Quote
Backroads Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 He is not married and when i used lds.org to find his ward he doesnt exist it seems fishy to me but she insists its trueThat is suspicious. Then again, I use the map part of lds.org as a big part of my job and thus place a lot of trust in it so maybe I don't want to believe it could fail, but usually that site is pretty up-to-date.In other thoughts...Our second counselor is a dorky just-got-out-of-college kid. trubludru Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 (edited) He is not married and when i used lds.org to find his ward he doesnt exist it seems fishy to me but she insists its trueVery unlikely a young single man would be called to be Bishop of a singles ward....it is possible but I am very skeptical. I would say said man is trying to put one over on your friend. As a branch president in an area with few members or possibly as a counselor in the Bishopric I'd find believable but in an area that is established with enough members to have a seperate singles ward, I'm not buying that he is the Bishop.Added: I do have a bro-in-law who was a counselor in his married student ward at about age 25 or 26. But I still think the scenario as described is highly unlikely. Edited October 23, 2012 by trubludru Quote
Guest Doctrine Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 He could be a Counselor to the bishop. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Church policy today is what it is; but FWIW - My great-grandfather was called to be a bishop in his early twenties in Canada, while still single. In fact, his entry in the LDS Biographical Encyclopedia specifically states that "he has failed to observe Apostle Paul's declaration as to the marriage qualification, but in other respects is doing a good work." He married my great-grandmother (one of his congregants) shortly thereafter, in 1906, at the ripe old age of twenty-three. Quote
