According to the news outlets I have read there hasn't been any confirmation as to whether it was intentional or unintentional.

I read a couple articles which specified it may have been an electrical problem with the transformers in the area.

The last article I read mentioned about 25-30 are missing a limb as a result of the explosion. This is really sad.

EDIT: Apparently, the information I had was incorrect according to another friend of mine. Her source mentioned "homemade bombs" and the police disarmed two other bombs while detonating another one.

At least 2 dead, 28 hurt by Boston Marathon bombs

And some of the injuries are leading to amputations.

This just hits me in the gut. I'm only an amateur runner, but I know plenty of very avid runners, and many train for YEARS to qualify to run in Boston. It's a "bucket list" thing for them. I can't imagine finally getting to achieve your dream and then either being killed, or losing a limb. I even feel bad for those who weren't injured, but obviously now aren't going to be able to finish the race they worked so hard to prepare for.

So many people's dreams are being shattered by these explosions to various degrees. :(

There were traumatic amputations - limbs blown off by the force of the explosion.

Not being able to finish the race is the least of anyone's concerns. My sister is a world-class runner (and she has run Boston.with a qualifying time fast enough for the men's). She can't imagine any runner whining about not finishing under such tragic circumstances.

I'm not saying not finishing the race is anywhere near as tragic as losing a limb, which is why I put "to varying degrees" at the end of my post, and I was also referring to more than just the other runners. I don't think it's incorrect to say that events such as these effect more than just the persons directly involved, while the victims are baring the greatest brunt of this tragedy, obviously.

I was thinking it cant be ironic that bombs at the finish lines take away the ability of people to be able to run. It is an added sickness to the whole thing. Those injured were most likely to be the friends and family of the runners.

I will never understand how people can do these evil things. And even worse is 8 victims are known to be children, not including one of the dead is a 8 year old child. These people are following evil.

Runners were not complaining about not finishing the race. They were too busy being grateful to be alive and spending their time assisting the injured, donating blood and helping out any way they could.

Jenamarie is mourning what she wants to, in the way that she wants to.

I must not be explaining myself well, because that is not what I meant at all. I'm not saying that I or the other runners are feeling like "Aww man, all that work for nothing!" since they didn't get to cross the finish line.

I just feel bad for them. A dream was turned into a nightmare. That shouldn't happen to *anyone*.

I get what you're saying, Jenamarie. There's nothing wrong with grieving a lost dream of crossing that finish line in the midst of grieving for lost lives. They are not mutually exclusive.

If I was a runner in that marathon - especially if I've prepared for it for years and knew that it was my one and only shot at it (I'll never be able to train as much to qualify for another round), I will be saying, "Aww man, all that work for nothing!" too. Might not feel it right this moment as we're busy being in the service of others... but, that feeling will come. Surely. And it is still a big part of that tragedy.

As I saw the news I was saddened as were others on this forum. I am concerned that such things are a precursor or trend. I personally believe that there is a connection between people of faith and obedience and divine protections.

From "A Proclamation to the World":

We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

Am I reading too much into this?

But the rain falls AND the sun shines on the bad and the good. I believe that obedience to gospel principles protects us from things like the darkness surrounding drug dealing and other illegal actions, the pain afflicting those addicted to pornography, lonliness and emotional hurts from abuse and divorce, etc...all that bad stuff (even this is iffy). But good, righteous people still get killed in earthquakes and other natural disasters, missionaries get hit by cars, BYU students are raped and beaten, General authorities get cancer. You get what I mean. We definitely CAN protect ourselves from some bad things through obedience but we aren't always going to be divinely protected from what others can do to us.
