Dark_Jedi Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 OK, I put this here because I'm not actually asking for advice, I'm just curious about what others might do in a similar situation. My son is a senior, captain of the soccer team and an all star goalie (both league and region). Each year the seniors in seminary take a trip to Kirtland and tour the sites, it's a two day affair leaving on Friday and returning Saturday. This year's trip is planned on the same day (Friday) of the last regular season soccer game (too early too tell if they'll be in play offs or not). What would you do? Quote
Dravin Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 Do I need to say who I agree with? :) Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted August 20, 2013 Author Report Posted August 20, 2013 Let him decide.I should have said that in my original post. It was his decision, and he did decide on his own. He gave it very little thought, it was an easy decision for him. That's not to say that all such decisions are, sometimes it's not so cut and dried and the church activity and outside activity are both good, worthwhile, exciting, etc.(He agrees with Wingnut, by the way.) Wingnut Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 Despite my apparent leaning in my earlier post on this thread, I agree with the idea of letting him decide. As a senior in high school, he's old enough to make such decisions on his own, and be responsible for the consequences. Yeah, Kirtland would have been a great trip for him -- perhaps even life-changing. But this is his last soccer game* of high school. He'll never get that chance again. *I read the OP too quickly the first time around, and was thinking that it was Kirtland or the state championships. My opinion might have sounded less cut-and-dry if I'd realized that the first time around. :) Quote
Backroads Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 If it were me, I would pick the game. 'Course, if it really were me, I would go on the trip because I hate team sports. Quote
mrmarklin Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 It also bears noting that he is Captain of the team. Quote
Lakumi Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 It also bears noting that he is Captain of the team.if I was ever a Captain I would call myself "El Capitanno" but in hockey the goalie is typically not the captain Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted August 21, 2013 Author Report Posted August 21, 2013 if I was ever a Captain I would call myself "El Capitanno" but in hockey the goalie is typically not the captainOK, to be totally upfront, he is A captain (one of two), but nonetheless team leader. As a side note, in soccer (or futbol) the keeper runs the defense so being captain is not really all that unusual, although not all keepers are captains. And, hey, state championship would be great, but not likely. They're a good team, but it's a tough region. While a winning season is more than likely and playoffs are also very likely, it still could be his last game of high school soccer (and probably his last real game ever) if they don't make the playoffs. The team scheduled that day is a major rival, it could well come down to that game, and it's at the other team's field - only his team has beaten them on their home turf in the last four years and only once. So, more generally speaking, what factors do you all take into account when trying to decide between church activities and outside activities? TalkativeIntrovert Posted August 21, 2013 Report Posted August 21, 2013 So, more generally speaking, what factors do you all take into account when trying to decide between church activities and outside activities? It really depends on what the church activity is vs what the personal activity is. The answer would change depending on each different scenario. I go for agreed commitment first. If I, or the kids, have committed to a season of football/hockey/whatever, and the church activity is a one off, then the commitment to team comes first. If it is a decision between an extended family activity (we don't see them often) and a church activity, then family comes first. Though we would make an attempt to schedule things with the family. If the outside activity is one that can be done at a different time, then church activity comes first. Though in that case it is unlikely that we would have scheduled in such a conflict. The biggest problem we have is church activities with very short notice. Communication is not very good and this includes from the stake! Often, you have to physically be at church in a particular meeting to get notification of an event. I don't always think to push past the milling crowds to read the noticeboards in the foyer on a Sunday. It is getting better now that we have a facebook page, but there are many without FB and it is not always updated. Quote

Guest Posted August 21, 2013 Report Posted August 21, 2013 I suppose I decide these things based on the following factors, in order of importance: 1. Where do I have the greatest responsibility? 2. What would give me the greatest long-term benefit? 3. What would I enjoy most? 4. What do I feel like doing? Quote

While yes there is times where there are more then one captain, and yes there are times when the goalie is captain, its not that common. As a Canadian, hockey was the sport I played as a kid and even adultsoccer is an alien game to me Quote
Guest Posted August 22, 2013 Report Posted August 22, 2013 My brother was goalie for the Philippine Team. He was not captain. But that was about the only time that he was not the Captain when he played goalie. Soccer goalies have the advantage of seeing the entire field while in the thick of play from a very good vantage point... And it gives them something to do besides picking grass while the ball is far from the goal. Lol. Which I will choose is usually what I think I need to do the most. Quote
