notquiteperfect Posted March 1, 2014 Report Posted March 1, 2014 I am putting together a newsletter which includes a couple quotes from General Authorities. One is from David O. McKay while he was in the Quorum of the 12. Would you use 'Elder' as the title in this case or use 'President' because he was in that position (though later than the date of the quote)? Quote
Suzie Posted March 1, 2014 Report Posted March 1, 2014 When I write about Church history and I have to quote leaders, I only write their name, such as "David O. McKay". Quote
pam Posted March 1, 2014 Report Posted March 1, 2014 I'm with Suzie. I only use their names....not title. Quote
SpiritDragon Posted March 1, 2014 Report Posted March 1, 2014 I find it can be useful to call them by name as suggested by Suzie and Pam, but if it adds to context also specify the position they were serving in at the time. I find this is especially useful for past general authorities that didn't become the prophet and many of us will no longer recognize their name as an authoritative source without a little background info. applepansy Posted March 1, 2014 Report Posted March 1, 2014 If you are giving the full reference (date, place, etc.) the date sometimes clues people in to their position at the time. I appreciate the title including the year and place (Conference Address, Ensign Article, BYU Ed week, etc.). Quote
pam Posted March 1, 2014 Report Posted March 1, 2014 I should ask..what kind of a newsletter is it? Quote
LittleWyvern Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 {Name}, who was {Position} at {Time}, said... Quote
mnn727 Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 I call Q of 12 members Elder and FP members President. Now if Pres Monson wrote something as an Elder I would say 'Then Elder Monson of the Twelve', or 'then President of the Q of 12 President Monson' Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 The Church's style guide says you use the title they held at the time that they generated the quote being cited. So, in the OP's case . . . "Elder" would be appropriate. Quote
pam Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 However, in the social media world, if you are making a quote image (meme) it is better to leave a title off. Or sharing a quote on your facebook page.1: It gets people to search to find out who that person is if they are unfamiliar with the name.2: If it is a non member who likes the quote, they are more apt to share it if there is not a title that identifies with LDS. notquiteperfect Posted March 2, 2014 Author Report Posted March 2, 2014 I should ask..what kind of a newsletter is it?It's a monthly newsletter for the Primary teachers in which we include a spiritual thought and teaching tip (hence the quotes). Thanks all! You're awesome and gave me some great options and things to consider! Have an enjoyable Sabbath! :) Quote
