Guest LiterateParakeet Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Hey Wingnut, I had Greek Yogurt too!For lunch I'm craving rice (equal portions of white and brown mixed) and steamed broccoli with teriyaki sauce! Oh yes, and some cashews for protein and that satisfying crunch. Quote
Suzie Posted March 2, 2014 Author Report Posted March 2, 2014 Are you a vegetarian or vegan LiterateParakeet? I'm not a fan of rice generally but I enjoy brown rice. Quote
Guest LiterateParakeet Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 I'm a "wanna-be vegetarian"--meaning in principle and in my heart I am vegetarian, but sometimes I am weak...mostly when the family eats pizza . . . (still if a little pepperoni once a week is all the meat I eat that's not too bad right? Tell that to the pig ) That's my dilemma, but I'm getting there. So close--sorry to all the pigs.I love rice, but brown rice is an acquired taste. I want to eat it because it's healthier, so I am working on acquiring the taste by mixing it with white rice. Gradually I will increase the brown rice until I give up white. Are you vegetarian or vegan or ??? Quote
pam Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 I probably shouldn't have read this thread. I'm fasting and now I'm REALLY hungry. Quote

Wingnut Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 I started a new medication almost a month ago, and I have to take it in the morning. It says that it can be taken with or without food, but I've discovered that I can't drink water first thing in the morning without something substantial to eat with it (like, a couple of crackers won't cut it). It makes me feel a little green. And if I try taking this medicine without eating, I feel ill. So I guess I won't be fasting (in the traditional sense) for awhile. It's been hard to get back on the fasting horse anyway -- between pregnancy and breast-feeding it was hard to get back in the swing of it. Yes, I know it's been over a year, but I've hard a hard time between kids, and since the last one, starting the routine again. Guess that's a little moot now anyway. Quote
Rice Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 After reading this thread I really want greek yoghurt, granola and honey. Quote

Wingnut Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Here's my granola recipe. I think I may have posted it on this site before, but I seriously love it.Granola8 cups rolled oats1 1/2 cups wheat germ1 1/2 cups oat bran3/4 cup sunflower seeds1 1/2 cup finely chopped almonds1 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans1 1/2 teaspoons salt1/2 cup brown sugar1/4 cup real maple syrup (not pancake syrup)3/4 cup honey1 cup vegetable oil4 tsp ground cinnamon1 tbsp vanilla extract2 cups Craisins (optional)Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line two large baking sheets with parchment or aluminum foil.Combine the oats, wheat germ, oat bran, sunflower seeds, almonds, and pecans in a roasting pan. Stir together the salt, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, oil, cinnamon, and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then pour over the dry ingredients, and stir to coat completely. Spread the mixture out evenly on the baking sheets.Bake in the preheated oven until toasted, about 20 minutes. Stir once halfway through. Cool, then stir in the Craisins, if using. Store in an airtight container. Quote

beefche Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 I can vouch for Wingy's granola. She shared some that she made once and it was seriously yummy. I used it in yogurt and I don't even like yogurt that well. But, this granola made me inhale it. Quote

Suzie Posted March 2, 2014 Author Report Posted March 2, 2014 Wings, can the vegetable oil be replaced with canola oil in that recipe? Quote
Wingnut Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Sure, I suppose. I only use vegetable oil or olive oil at my house, generally speaking, but I don't see why not. Also, the original recipe called for 1 cup each of almonds, pecans, and walnuts, but despise walnuts. Quote
Quin Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Marzipan dipped in dark chocolate. Also gumbo. But mostly marzipan dipped in dark chocolate. Q Quote
dahlia Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Actually, brown rice is problematic for a few reasons. See: Arsenic in Rice and Rice Products Although a serving at time won't bother you, we still don't know the long term effects of eating arsenic. See: FDA arsenic-in-Rice findings underscore concerns about long-term safety | Consumers UnionAnd for some other rice info written in an accessible way: Feel Bad About Eating White Rice? — Granny's Vital VittlesMillions, if not billions, of people live on white rice. We are not in danger of nutritionally-caused illnesses by eating white rice if we eat a varied diet; it's not like rice is our only food. I don't mind brown rice, but I'm not going to be a slave to it. I eat white rice and feel fine about it.I got up late. I think I'm going to do a 700 calorie day and just have meal replacement shakes and a light dinner. Quote
Quin Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Since everyone else is sounding so healthy today.... And then there's my post. Quote

Iggy Posted March 3, 2014 Report Posted March 3, 2014 We had four cheese rising crust Digiorno pizza to which I added chopped onions and fried, scrambled hamburger. While it was cooking Husband had garden salad and I had coleslaw.Later tonight, we just may have tuna salad sandwiches with lots of garden salad on them. I put tuna salad on both sides of the bread, then put the salad greens in the middle. Hubby just may have Progresso Tomato w/Basil soup with his sandwich. Quote
Sharky Posted March 3, 2014 Report Posted March 3, 2014 Breakfast was a few mini-candy bars while visiting with Bishop in his office just before meetings.Lunch a frozen pizza.Supper, for some reason I ended up having the entire afternoon HOME ALONE (oh oh, dad home alone usually spells T-R-O-U-B-L-E-!-!-!), so supper was leftover frozen pizza.
