I thought about starting this thread tro name and shame the trolls we have on this bioard, so that we can know who they are, so we can follow the golden rule of forums,

DON'T FEED THE TROLLS

The big question is, should we name and shame our trolls?

That is a good question. Of course, its likely that the trolls would differ with us. I dont know if naming them on a thread is a wise one. I think most recognize trolls, but naming them in public would make this site look bad in a sense. My opinion only.

Let's see, names of trolls. :hmmm: Well, there's cave troll, hill troll, marsh troll, mountain troll, prairie troll, forest troll, snow troll...yep, I think that's all of 'em.

Seriously, I agree that compiling a list of names is profitless. The best thing to do is ignore those posts we see as being the metaphorical hook laden with a succulent, wriggling worm.

In other words, don't bite when someone wants to aimlessly fight.

I believe that it is interesting that such a thread would be started.

Apparently there is a real problem with this here at LDS Talk. We as moderators need your help in this area. If you see something that you believe is a problem alert one of the moderators or use the report button at he bottom of each thread with an explanation as to what you believe the problem is.

Also, if you know of a problem in chat send a PM to one of the mods. We can not be everywhere and a single PM can alert us as a team to keep an eye out. We will also be using the tool called Moderator Status. If a member is having difficulty understanding what is tolerated at LDS Talk then we have the ability to place them on Moderator Status which mean their posts will be evaluated by a moderator before it hits the forums.

I won't name them, but I'll describe them. They come under false pretenses, or they come clearly just to stir the pot. The first type stay around awhile, pretending to be interested in the LDS faith, but publish "concerns" and "questions." Quite often they will verbalize their sincerity (a non-necessity if they really are--and an indication that they know they are being contentious).

As for non-LDS who come with their perspectives, it is just a matter of how much the board wishes to tolerate. Obviously, name-calling, cut-n-paste criticism, and an unwillingness to dialogue are all indicative of someone who just wants to put up a soapbox.

Overall, I've been impressed with this site's ability to welcome different perspectives, and weed out those who've come with short-term non-mutual agendas. Some of the greatest consternation caused, imho, has been from posters who are not anti-LDS, just people with loud personalities, aggressive criticisms, and often with deceitful stories.

The other problem to that is...most trolls are here so briefly. Come in to stir the pot and leave. They would not even care if their name was mentioned or not. So posting a list of names would not accomplish anything.

All good suggestions, and all I really wanted to do was re-alert people to what remedies are available when a troll hijacks a thread. Sometimes we make it worse by feeding them and doing what they want.

There's been some speculation that I may have had particular current posters in mind, in my last post on this topic. My description of trolls was a combination of several posters I remember from many months ago.

There are no current posters on this site that I find deceptive--those tend to go by the wayside. Furthermore, the ones that mostly cut and paste, or who intentionally stir the pot, are gone as well.

It was disconcerting to me that some had speculated that my psot was directed at individuals that, imho, simply express passionate views. As long as posters are honest, and not mean-spirited, I tend to respect them--whether I agree or not.
