Elphaba Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 I've just had an interesting "conversation" via PMs. I received a PM and was told I think like a Muslim, and that all Muslims "think" like I do. Intrigued I asked the person to specify where I had said something that gave that impression, and was told just my posts in general. Next I was told Islam had all my answers. At this point I realized I was being recruited, so to speak, and I responded, politely saying I was an atheist and asking the person not to proselytize me. (I might have mentioned I was an atheist in a previous post, I can't remember, but I did mention it.) This was the response: "Ok.I won't send you .But know that if you deny God's favors you will be a loser." You know, I really don't get it. Why are some believers so offended when you do essentially the same thing they do; explain your belief and tell them you're not interested in theirs? Anyway, I can't imagine why someone would think I would be interested in Islam. Free thought and women's right are not what I associate with the religion. Me, a Muslim. Bah! Elphaba Quote
pushka Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 LOL Elphie!! I hope you're recovered from that PM session! :) Quote
prisonchaplain Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Allah-salaam, malaekum! :-) (I think it means God is great!) Quote

Bah!Elphabanow you have to explain the difference....you say atheist.....and under your name you have agnostic.....I have been told there is a difference, you can't be both..... Quote
pam Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Besides as someone pointed out to me...to be Muslim you have to believe in God. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 It may be that, in practical terms, there is no difference. An agnostic says that God is not knowable (if he exists). An atheists says there is no God. Either way, no communication, nor relationship, no accountability to the higher power. Quote

Moksha Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Midnight at the oasis Send your camel to bed Shadows paintin' our faces, Traces of romance in our heads. Heaven's holdin' a half-moon Shinin' just for us; Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon And kick up a little dust. Come on, Cactus is our friend; He'll point us out the way. Quote

Alaskagain Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 hmmm Elphaba a Muslim?Well, I heard the new carpenter burqa has loops sewn in - it would help her keep that broom steady. Quote
Fiannan Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Actually, in a spiritual sense being a Muslim would be more positive than being an atheist. Islam does provide many answers to life's questions (like Chritianity it is an offshoot of Judaism) and I have no doubt that Islamic people are more happy than atheists on the whole. Elphaba, in case you are into study with the intent to convert (of course I would be pleased if you cam eback to Mormonism but if that isn't in the cards...) check out Harun Yahya's web sites -- he does seem to be quite intellectual in his presentations on God's existence. FrankJL Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 That was an interesting site. He has a lot of well throughout articles on it. Quote

Bah!ElphabaUnder Islamic belief everyone is born a Muslim they use the term revert rather than convert. And actually there are as many Islamic sects are there are Christian. Some of the most strong minded free thinking women I have ever met have been Islamic-Charley Quote
john doe Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Well, it does take a certain kind of mindset for an 18 year old girl to be able to strap a bomb around her body just to make a statement. Quote

FrankJL Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Actully "Allahu Akbar" is shortened form for "God is greater then everything"...and what we was told to look out for when the Iraqi's with big chests and skinny legs started to chant it. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 You're right. The phrase I used is some kind of general greeting. Perhaps the equivalent of God bless you? Quote
FrankJL Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 That I don't know....the Arabic I learned was only a few key phrases like: get out of the road stop or i'll shoot you I don't have any more candy ect... Quote

Do you? It sounds like you'd be a perfect fit for Islam.I enjoy learning about different religions, but I have no passion for it. And I certainly have no intent or a desire to change my belief system any more than you do. I am aware that in many Muslim groups woman are treated with equality and esteem, and allowed to choose professions which bring them respect and honor.I am also aware of the other extreme, which Muslim women can be forced into at any moment, which we've seen happen time and time again. The law of Sharia is part of the Muslim religion and can be enforced by the men at any time, and the women have nothing to say about it. Radical Muslims can take over, as we've seen in Iraq, and the women have no choice but to walk around in the Burqas and cower before the men. It can happen any time to any Muslim woman, I don't care how advanced they are for the moment.I don't trust any religion that can stone a woman to death. Period. And I'm perfectly happy with my atheism, so there's no need for any of you to think I'm looking to be converted. But thank you for your heart-felt concern anyway.Elphaba Quote
