I'm thinking someone needs to switch to ink samples - $1.25 - $2.25 to try out the color before you buy the whole bottle - you've got enough ink there for several novels. ;)

Enjoy.  Agree on the pink - ick, too pale.  Maybe OK on Valentine's Day to fill in a drawn heart.  After looking at reviews, I might like the Chocolat and Shoreline Gold, and probably Copper Burst.  The other colors are too normal. :)

Enjoy!

This isn't exactly hurtinng Mirk's perspective...

Every hobby on the planet is this way, and yet, people don't take heat for that.  Like music? You'll need to buy it (or steal it, which is worse).  Like running? You'll need to buy shoes and other attire.  Like painting?  You'll need canvas, easel, paints, brushes, palette.  Like gardening?  You'll need seeds and tools and land.  Like to read?  You'll need to buy books (or get a library card, but likely you'll buy books).  Like hunting?  You'll need a lot of stuff there.  Like a particular holiday?  You'll have to buy appropriate decorations...  Etc. Etc. Etc.  Sigh.

I just made it super easy for you... pick the colors you like from that writing sampler... then go and buy the sample size vial (3ml size)... it only costs $1.25 each from here:  https://www.andersonpens.com/private-reserve-ink-samples-s/2104.htm

:)

Okay....vent time....

The new "special edition" Lamy Safari is BLACK????   Black???  I'm so disappointed.  They have two other black Lamy Safari's.  Sheesh, I'll pass.

And the new TWSBI Eco T (I love this pen!!!) is yellow-green?  Bleh!  These people are killing me!

Geez!

Yeah, but the LE Al-Star pink / magenta thing oughta be right up your alley! :D

(And yeah, that new Eco-T color is hideous.  I'm thinking someone had left over plastic stock on sale for cheap and TWSBI bought it for some insane reason.)

And I can't distinguish between the black and the charcoal - maybe in person, or if someone put them side-by-side...

@zil You're right, I do love pink! So there is that . . .

The LE Safari last year was purple/violet/whatever that thing is called.  I almost bought it for my son.  It's his girlfriend's favorite color.

That was two years ago.  Last year was "Petrol", 2016 was "Dark Lilac".  You might be thinking of the Al-Star, but the 2017 color was "Pacific blue".

I have both!  I love the purple and petrol LS's.  My plan was to collect the new Special Edition every year, but another black?   Ugh.    The reviews of the new pink Al Star say that it's not really pink...but magenta.   I think I'll just get a new bottle of ink and wait for next year's new colors.  Or maybe it's time of a TWSBI Mini! :)

All I can say is I'm glad I don't feel the need to collect in that way.  It's bad enough that I feel the need to have a variety of styles and nib materials, but if I needed to collect every edition of something, I'd probably go broke (cuz I really like the Visconti Homo Sapiens line).

Ugh.  I didn't know this was a yearly event.  Wa wa wa.  Okay, I really like that dark lilac and I was only hesitating because it's a safari.  From what I understand the Safari is the same as an Al-star but plastic instead of metal.  I really like the weight of the metal pens so I wasn't sure if the Safari's plastic casing would make a difference in it's handling.  What do you think LP?

@anatess2 I know what you mean, my first Lamy was an Al Star for the same reason. But I find I actually prefer the lighter weight of the Safari.  I do still love my two Al Stars, but if I could only have one it would be my Lamy Safari Petrol.  I think its just personal preference.

If you want you could get a Safari from Goulet and just see how it feels  (without inking it.) Then if it doesn't work for you, you can return it.  Or you might find you love it.  :)

Ok, you convinced me.  I'm getting that dark lilac.  I'm gonna have to be tough and tell my kid he can't have it!  By the way, speaking of my kids - they each have an Al-Star and both have 2 nibs -M and EF.  They both prefer the EF than the M because for some reason, the M writes very thick the way they use the pen.  For some reason, when I write with their pens using the M nib, my lines are way thinner!  Using the EF nib, I wouldn't be able to see it without my glasses even with my nose kissing the paper.

They're applying too much pressure (which is any at all).  They need to learn that it's not a ballpoint - you don't have to cram the pen against the paper - its own weight should be enough for the ink to come out.  This takes deliberate training to stop squeezing the pen tight and stop pushing down on the paper.  Tell them to train themselves.

WHOA!  You got roped in!

Welcome to the club.

Gotta work on gliding that pen on the paper more evenly I think.  So the ink doesn't fade in and out.

I'm jealous.  I don't have a rhodia.  I was wanting that dot one.

Nope, that's called "shading".  Some inks do it, some don't1.  Some people like it, some don't.  I'm madly in love with it. :D  Larger nibs tend to show shading better than smaller nibs.  Printing tends to show shading better than cursive.

NOTE: It can also happen if you are putting variable pressure on the nib as you write, but people don't generally do that (unless it's on purpose with a flex nib).  That does not appear to be the case above - looks like normal shading, and that ink would - it's kinda pale and under-saturated.

1The inks that do it generally have lower saturation (of dye) so that areas where the ink pools (generally where you lift the pen) are darker because there's more ink there.  The inks that don't do it are heavily saturated - you could write over the same spot a dozen times and it never looks darker than the first time.  (Noodler's and Private Reserve inks are well-known for tending to have a heavy dye load - very saturated.  Not all their inks, but it's common among their inks.  Robert Oster has a lot of inks that shade well.  (His also sheen, but that's another topic.))

Count me in on the don't.  I do not like that at all.  One thing I love about my Private Reserve ink is it is super color rich and doesn't fade in and out on me!
