During the era of The Cold War the Communist Party was identified as an evil force that would no problem lowering themselves to tactics out lined by Joseph Gobles as a means of changing the mind of the masses. It is the concept of telling a lie often – especially in honored places and everyone will believe it.

There are many that utilize this propaganda strategy from politics to religion. For purpose of this thread I intend to direct my comments towards Al Gore and his propaganda concerning what he calls an “inconvenient truth”.

To utilize a big lie strategy it is needed to have the aid and support of what we call the popular media. The method is usually to praise any support and demonize any skepticism. I will list several items concerning global warming that go against the accepted wisdom of the media.

1. The burning of fossil fuels does not “emit” green house gasses. If you ever hear a report about automobiles emitting any green house gas that report is simply not true. The carbon gas emitted by the burning of fossil fuels is carbon monoxide which is a stable molecule that is not a green house gas. The carbon based green house gas is carbon dioxide. Now let me ask a question – can anyone tell the forum the method by which carbon monoxide becomes carbon dioxide? The reason is that this information is left out is because once it is understood it will end the argument that man made contributions to green house gas is a farce.

2. Carbon dioxide makes up less than 10% of the green house gasses in the atmosphere. The major green house gas is also the most variant gas and that is plain old water vapor. The amount of carbon in the atmosphere is more dependent on non-human factors such as volcano eruptions and fires started world wide by lighting than by human transportation and energy consumption. If anyone cannot explain the chemical process by which carbon monoxide becomes carbon dioxide you can be sure they have an unfounded biased opinion.

3. Artic warming has more to do with changes in ocean current and not global warming. A Google or “Artic Currents NASA” will yield a link to why the artic has been warming. The reason the Antarctic is warming is because of an active volcano and the rest of the world is not changing that much.

Thanks for this informative post. It obviously is a political ploy, whether founded in truth or not. I'm skeptical myself of the whole thing.

Interesting. I think that we (the United States) are too depend on oil anyway. We need another fuel source so the oil companies do not have a monopoly on what runs our automobiles. I think the demand for oil has gone up a lot much since China has become a major consumer of oil. This may also be a contributing factor to the major increase in gasoline prices within the past several years.

What on earth does this have to do with anything?

Im not saying I disagree. Quite frankly, I think if we were doing anything to destroy ourselves and the planet the Lord would warn us through his prophets as He always does. The Lord's warnings are about far different things than "global warming"

however, that still doesnt tell me what the point of all this is.

A: magic?... oooh ooooh .... the carbon monoxide combines with the 'hot air' of the politicians, creating a chemical reaction that defies science?

For an alternative, possibly more factual based interpretation of global warming(please watch to learn something new):

I had heard at one time that when Mt St Helen erupted it was more than people could put into the atmosphere in a 1000 years. Don't have any proof per se but if that is correct that is a lot. I'm not buying the whole were doing it theme. I also had heard that there possibly was damage done to the atmosphere by the Gov. when they were testing the A bomb. Again no proof of that but I wouldn't put it pasted them to cover that up if it is true. Pure speculation on my part with no written backing. 2 cents

All truth is included in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even truth of the earth. I am solidly convinced that the earth is warming. I seriously doubt that mankind has caused it, nor can affect it to any measurable degree (barring an all-out effort).

As for prophets, there's always this:

D&C 133: 26

26 And they who are in the north countries shall come in remembrance before the Lord; and their prophets shall hear his voice, and shall no longer stay themselves; and they shall smite the rocks, and the ice shall flow down at their presence.

For those of us who aren't very scientific, it's hard to know what to believe when scientists don't even agree on this issue. I've heard that the earth goes in cycles of warming and cooling. Whether we're causing "global warming" or not, I do believe that we are polluting the air we breathe and our water. I think it's ridiculous that we still depend so much on oil when we have the technology to use a lot less. When I lived in Provo, I had chronic bronchitis for some reason and one day the snow was brown. I went out to my car and wondered how it suddenly got so dirty. I got in and when I turned my wipers on, mud started going side to side on my windshield. I had to pull over at the nearest gas station because I couldn't see. Within a minute, it was covered in mud again. I saw that everyone walking around had dirt all over them too. Later on the news said that what was in the snow was a combination of dust, salt, and pollution from Geneva Steel. That was when I decided to move back home and I stopped getting bronchitis so much. I remember one day on the news in Provo they said not to exercise outdoors because of the pollution. Then another day they said not to exercise indoors that day. When SLC had that terrible inversion, my best friend called me and I was so happy not to be living there anymore. She said they were going on a little trip to get away from it.

Truly this is hyped propaganda, mingled with 'truth'... the intent to confuse, which creates fear, and a false need for government then...

to ACT on our behalf.

Now, do give us an analogy, and tell us, where you see this in 'our' Religion, such as...

What lds principle or doctrine might you be observing, where you see this ploy in action, currently... and Why it is necessary to go about such, and in this particular manner?

Also, Who or Whom do you think is doing such a thing, and What might the intentions be?

I am a scientist - math and physics. Back in the 80's (while working for the Defense Department through Boeing) I helped develop magnetic variation tables to be used in navigation. Is short the magnetic characteristics of our planet are cause by electrical transmissions from the sun that vary (quite predictably) from sun spot cycles. We knew 25 years ago that variations in sun cycles could cause climate change (warming) – but not by much or not by enough to get excited about.

Currently I work in the field of automation, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Some things you should understand about oil and what are called alternate fuels. Gasoline can be found, mined, refined and distributed for around 25 cents a gallon. The extra charge you pay is profit and taxes, the greater being taxes. Alternate fuels would cost about $1.50 at the pump without the prophets. Bottom line gas is the best and most profitable fuel – both for private industry and governments. When you hear politicians complain about the profits of oil companies remember they are taking more than the oil companies in the way of taxes.

Also because of environmental laws newer more efficient refineries cannot be built in the US so most of our gas is refined on foreign soil for a profit and jobs that we could have here.

It is not a problem of scientist that disagree - the problem is the source of information (news media) with an adgenda that reports only what they want the public to hear. Even links on the internet go to the highest bidder. Most scientist are not interested in PR or politics.

Pollution and inversions in Utah are a problem - but note that carbon is not on the list of pollution problems for these kinds of warnings. Also things are much cleaner now than ever before in human history. The soot from wood and coal burning fires to heat homes in the past used to create such a problem the homes required a spring cleaning every year to remove layers of soot from the walls.

Yes we do have some very serious problems with pollution, anybody who cannott see this simply needs to step outside!

I still think we will destroy ourselves faster by disobeying the commands of the Lord far more than disobeying the laws of environmental extremists.

My answer to this question is always the same. The Earth warms. The Earth cools. So what!

I'm not afraid of global warming. I'm afraid of cancer. What's giving so many people cancer? My friend's mom did everything right - ate healthy, exercised, had regular exams, and she died of cancer two months after her diagnosis. We have two people in our ward with cancer and another who I think is in remission.

I heard about a study (Yeah, I know, you kind of have to take those with a grain of salt) that links diesel fuel to heart attacks for men (I think it was heart attacks). It's not a funny subject, but I kind of laughed because it made me think about my dad and how he runs away screaming when he is next to a bus, "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!! DIESEL!!!!!!" He hates that smell. Now he has an excuse for acting like a lunatic. :P

Anyway, I'm sure many of our health problems are environmentally related. My friend who lost her mom is terrified. She always thought if she lost anyone close, it would be her husband because he smokes, eats a lot of red meat, drinks, etc. How easily he could get sick.

Having had to deal with cancer myself this past year, I think I'm more afraid of mental illness. Hopefully I'll never get to personally compare the two...

I also hope you'll never get to compare those. Did you personally have a cancer scare or was it someone in your family?

It was me. The theory is that it has all been removed, now. We'll see.

Hijolly...

My hubby had colon cancer which they removed and resectoned his colon and he survived six years without recurrence (a year's chemo)... passed away of unrelated causes...

Now, about global warming... my opinion is that the earth naturally goes through cycles, including warming... but, that said, I also think that man could be contributing to that problem but certainly not to the extent Mr. Gore and others proclaim...

Did I hear/read not long ago that the icecap at Antartica is expanding? Also my sis in Missouri just went through the most horrific ice storm that is now affecting the east coast...

Yes, it is a big lie.

Man could not, even if all of us tried in unison, effect the climate in any noticeable manner.

The SUN, however, effects us everyday.

For example, the SUN puts out 380,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 watts of power every SECOND. It burns 6,000,000 TONS of Hydrogen every SECOND. In ONE SECOND we receive more energy from the SUN than all of the energy, all of the people who have ever lived have produced. One minor coronal mass ejection is equivalent to 1,000,000,000 Hiroshima's. The power of the SUN is nearly unimaginable.

In short, the SUN is the end cause of all climate matters, and there is exactly NOTHING man can do about it, even if we tried.

The issue of "Gorbal Warming" ooops, I mean "Global Warming" is one of power (not the power of the SUN, which is ignored), power over our fellow man.

The adversary ALWAYS uses fear as motivation. He used fear with the phony threat of global annihilation by nuclear war (COLD WAR), then it was the threat of being fried by radiation because the "OZONE" layer was being destroyed by man (even though it is created by the SUN, which we can NEVER affect), now it's "GLOBAL WARMING" which has no basis in science, as any qualified scientist will admit.

SO, whenever the media would have us be afraid of something, especially when the proposed solution is global governance, you can take comfort in KNOWING, that the issue is phony.

Frankly, it surprises me that ANY LDS person would fall for such blather.
