Why do they call the August college football training and prep – “Fall Camp”?

It’s a good question, not an ignorant one at all. @mikbones video is a perfect answer.

Because only the mighty survive it. The rest fall along the way.

Since accuracy of name and relevance is not important – why not call it winter camp or Sunday school?

Usually the players call it things much harsher than “camp”, but since this is a religious forum, I’ll stop right there.

Imagine the jump from high school football to even D3, much less the Pac-10, SEC, etc. The playbook is ten times larger, the players go from 14-18 to…22 years old. You play in front of 9,000 people who will absolutely jeer and heckle you. There are many more differences of course.

Yes, the differences between college and the NFL are bigger than the jump from high school-college, but at least you are a grown man getting paid big bucks.

It’s a crazy jump.

I mean, lets face the truth.  College football is semi-pro. Kids are getting paid good money now. Most of the football players are taking inconsequential course loads and focusing all on football.

Then your HS fast guy ran a 4.6 thats slow in D1.  And the hits, my gosh!  Guys that weight 235 are running 4.5 40s.  Thats a crap ton of momentum.  And they know how to punish.

Many are on steroids…

Its no joke.

Exactly. Well said.

Do you think so? I’m not naive, I know it happens. But I’d like to think the majority work clean

Yes, I saw it in track and field.  Now add in the $, and the schools that 'deserve' a winning or championship team.

Steroids not only make you stronger, but they also speed up recovery.  They allow you to work out harder, and longer.  This enables you to be stronger, healthier, aggressive, and improve your technique.

Remember the Harvard 2012 cheating scandal?

Don't get me wrong.  Many are clean.  I was.  But when you see an average competitor show up after the summer vacation with 10# of muscle on them and run the 100m 0.2 seconds faster and throw the shot another 3 feet further you start wondering.

Want to get off the scrub team, earn a full ride, and not have to work through school?

Oh, I understand fully why people do it, but that doesn’t mean I approve of it. It’s cheating. Pure and simple.

Yes, I know this. They also do certain other things to males, things that 99.9% of males spend their lives trying to avoid.

Yeah, you just take other meds to compensate for the side effects.

And it starts with just a single cycle.  Then you see the results.  Girls notice you more.  The team respects you more.  You feel indestructible.

I just hit 55 years old.  I miss the strength, balance, and agility of my youth.  I never had to consider dieting back in the day.  I just had to fuel the ☢️ furnace.

The wisdom and knowledge of experience are nice though.

The resurrection will likely be a blast.

D&C 138:50 For the dead had looked upon the long absence of their spirits from their bodies as a bondage.

I can sympathize.

Boyd K. Packer

In 1992, having served nine years as an Assistant to the Twelve and 22 years as a member of the Twelve, I reached the age of 68. I felt impressed to start what I called an “Unfinished Composition.” The first part of that work goes like this:

I had a thought the other night,

A thought profound and deep.

It came when I was too worn down,

Too tired to go to sleep.

I’d had a very busy day

And pondered on my fate.

The thought was this:

When I was young, I wasn’t 68!

I could walk without a limp;

I had no shoulder pain.

I could read a line through twice

And quote it back again.

I could work for endless hours

And hardly stop to breathe.

And things that now I cannot do

I mastered then with ease.

If I could now turn back the years,

If that were mine to choose,

I would not barter age for youth,

I’d have too much to lose.

I am quite content to move ahead,

To yield my youth, however grand.

The thing I’d lose if I went back

Is what I understand.

Ten years later, I decided to add a few more lines to that poem:

Ten years have flown to who knows where

And with them much of pain.

A metal hip erased my limp;

I walk quite straight again.

Another plate holds neck bones fast—

A wonderful creation!

It backed my polio away;

I’ve joined the stiff-necked generation.

The signs of aging can be seen.

Those things will not get better.

The only thing that grows in strength

With me is my forgetter.

You ask, “Do I remember you?”

Of course, you’re much the same.

Now don’t go getting all upset

If I can’t recall your name.

I would agree I’ve learned some things

I did not want to know,

But age has brought those precious truths

That make the spirit grow.

Of all the blessings that have come,

The best thing in my life

Is the companionship and comfort

I get from my dear wife.

Our children all have married well,

With families of their own,

With children and grandchildren,

How soon they all have grown.

I have not changed my mind one bit

About regaining youth.

We’re meant to age, for with it

Comes a knowledge of the truth.

You ask, “What will the future bring?

Just what will be my fate?”

I’ll go along and not complain.

Ask when I’m 88!

And last year I added these lines:

And now you see I’m 88.

The years have flown so fast.

I walked, I limped, I held a cane,

And now I ride at last.

I take a nap now and again,

But priesthood power remains.

For all the physical things I lack

There are great spiritual gains.

I have traveled the world a million miles

And another million too.

And with the help of satellites,

My journeys are not through.

I now can say with all certainty

That I know and love the Lord.

I can testify with them of old

As I preach His holy word.

I know what He felt in Gethsemane

Is too much to comprehend.

I know He did it all for us;

We have no greater Friend.

I know that He will come anew

With power and in glory.

I know I will see Him once again

At the end of my life’s story.

I’ll kneel before His wounded feet;

I’ll feel His Spirit glow.

My whispering, quivering voice will say,

“My Lord, my God, I know.”

I can too, but sympathy only goes so far. I’ve seen what steroids do in boxing and martial arts, and it’s cheating. It was one guy with a bad temper, bad acne, bad aggression-but a good athlete. I never had confirmation he took them but the entire gym talked about it.

I'll have to double check at work, but IIRC the first high school football game of the season is at the end of this month, which would be the 30th or so.

I have to deliver the Saturday morning football special edition, so yeah...

I have already been watching pre-season pro games and youtube scrimmage / practice highlights of BYU.

I am so ready for fall.  This summer the heat and fires were brutal.

Bring it on!

I lived in Okinawa when I was a kid. I've heard the climate there described as "Florida with the occasional monsoon". And that's how I decided, at age 10, that I would never voluntarily live in Florida. 😜

Strange you should mention this.  Nowhere in scripture has anyone ever been told to get away to a sandy beach by the ocean to get closer to G-d.  It has always been to a high mountain – obviously where there is snow.

The LDS belief that Zion will be in Missouri certainly raises some interesting questions about paradise. 🧐

You may be referencing the prophesy of Isaiah – recorded in Isaiah 2:2

Quote

2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

Just a couple of things for doctrine.  The symbolic use of mountain is often used for a temple and for the means for G-d to establish his covenants with mankind.  It is not uncommon for sacred prophecy to contain both specific literal meaning as well as symbolic references.  What I find interesting about this prophesy is that in the language of the indigenous Ute peoples that inhabit much of the mountain west of the USA – their word to designate the top of the mountains is their native word “Utah”.

Utah was never intended to be the final place where Zion was to be established.  Just that Place in the Last-days leading up to the time when the Messiah will return.
