  1. While i don't agree with what he has to say i would expect the members of this board, most of us belonging to a religion whose early members and leader faced vigilant "justice" due to a difference of religious belief with the mainstream Christianity at the time, to be more understanding and sympathetic to the situation. Reminds me of the protesters at the gate when i was still in the service. My supervise used to get so mad and criticism them at work because he didn't agree with what they had to say. I loved them. Not because i shared their views but because they were an indication that the rights we fought for were being protected and used. So while i think this church is way off base i recognize that the fact they can spew such hate that conflicts with popular opinion means means other churches who belief conflict with popular opinion have the right to voice their beliefs.
  2. When i was a youth i recall them speaking to us at a mutual activity on this very topic. One of the leaders told us "Do something you love, because there is nothing worse then having a job you hate that pays the bills." My father on the way home corrected this and said, "There is nothing worse then having a job you hate that doesn't pay the bills." He was working 3 at the time. So i think you need to find the balance between practicality and love. That being said as a man who has recently gone through a mid life crisis, i'm not that old but my family tends to have a short life expectancy, seriously i bought a little red convertible even though i have a family of 5 and live in the snowy mid west:D. My advice is to take the risks and chances while you are young. It's much easier to say, restore old cars to sell before you have a garage full of tricycles, sleds and t-ball equipment, the path requiring 7 years of study looks more appealing when the graduation is at 28 rather then at 35. The younger you are the less responsibility you have, generally speaking, the more options you have. Take full advantage of it. As the great Yogi Berra said "If you come to a fork in the road, take it" Of course i'm roughly 2 years into an undergrad that is basically "worthless" unless i'm lucky enough to get into grad school, so it is still possible to take the risk when you are older if you have the support. But i would be lying if i didn't tell you that every time i sign up more classes i don't think about switching into a "safer" major that i can complete sooner.
  3. Love the castings, Have and idiots guide to casting site i can go to?
  4. This year i have decided to forgo the commercialism of Christmas , for my wife, so rather then buying something she can pick up up at the store i'm trying to be more creative. Problem is it isn't my strong suit. I'm taking on a beach themed needle point myself , though now think i might be in over my head after taking 2 hours to make 2, inch long seagulls:o but i'm looking for something kids 5 and 6 could do that are bit more intricate/ permanent then the typical school craft. Also need to survive being shipped around the world. Any ideas?
  5. If a child is too young to see the nude scene, which i assume will be pretty tame, then i would think them too young to watch a movie with so many deaths. Just an FYI there is a sort of "cross dressing" scene due to the affects of polyjuice potion from the pics i have seen:o
  6. Good idea. Shows the son a respect of belief and allows husband to suss out whether it is a power-play by a child who doesn't with to be at church in general for the lack of excitement, or if he has a problem with the LDS church itself.
  7. We know education corresponds with success. We also know the more successful the more alcohol you consume. The more successful you are, the more you drink, research finds - Health News, Health & Families - The Independent There is some merit to the idea that the large LDS population is more likely go to the Dr for anti depressants, rather then drinking the blues away. However if it is the education causing Utah to take these drugs it is not a good thing either. Depression and Anxiety, as i know it as a medical condition, are based on chemical imbalances in the body and disease tends to follow genetic lines not cultural ones, so just as the non LDS Dr and Lawyer in Iowa try to drink the stress away,(self medicate without actually having the disease)there would be plenty on LDS Utes who get the meds without the need. Members with the actual disease are more likely to seek the drug rather then self medicate with alcohol.Good if you have the disease. But also members with a little bit of the blues, or stress are more likely seek the drug, then "self medicate" with alcohol. Bad if you don't.
  8. Hey MOE. You're the stat man. Is it fair/common to compare such a small sample group to a larger one? 90% of my ward is in the military. Compared with .1% (stat made up on spot) of all US citizens. This indicates Mormons are more likely to join the service? I don't doubt it is less, since they cannot have kids unless they truly want them but comparing such a small group to everyone doesn't seem right.
  9. There is a big difference between, a women with kids, an a man who has a kid with another women in a foreign country. And i'm not saying it is wrong, (though i do find it immature) she has every right to feel how she feels. What i'm saying is he must know why she feels like she does. Not wanting to have anything to do with the child indicates she doesn't want to be a mother to another child, Not wants her future kids to have anything to do with this child indicates a resentment to the consequence of the action.
  10. Personally i think your wife is being a bit, over the top on the situation. Her decision to remain married to you should be based on whether or not she loves you, or if she can forgive you assuming you slept with this girl while you were "with" your current wife. Hinging her marriage on whether or not you have consequences for your actions, while accepting the action itself, at least enough to stay wed, seems a bit immature. Reminds me of, for lack of a better analogy, those mafia wives who are with the husbands though the crimes but leave them after they are caught and go to jail as if it is the consequence and not the crime that is the problem. I think you need to explain this to her, in a better more compassionate way, that if she is going to be with you it must be because she loves you. She might be set to leave if the child is yours, because it is a reminder of the action, while without this reminder she believes she can forget, but You don't want to find out 2 or 3 years from now that she still resents you for this action, even without the child to remind her
  11. I mentioned this in another thread. Caffeine is like tattoos Some leaders have counseled against it, both the spiritual and physical dangers, in talks and in magazines. But it doesn't keep one from getting/ making "official" blessings or covenants.E.G. Temple, Baptism, Priesthood etc. And unfortunately some members who eschew it, because of their understanding, condemn those who do not. So my advice. If the Holy Ghost has confirmed to you that you should not consume caffeine then you should heed this advice. However Personal Revelation is just that, personal. You wouldn't call all your married friends, and tell them to have babies, because the Holy Ghost has confirmed the truthfulness of this council and you feel the need to have one.
  12. I have never understood the emphasis on a literal reading of the cleaning fire, while the 10 horned 7 headed beast, or the 4 horsemen are not assumed to be actual animals?
  13. As a human myself i must say i'm a bit offended. BTW, if you hate humans who do you spend your time hanging out with?
  14. San Francisco bans Happy Meals - Los Angeles Times On the one hand i hate the health police. On the other no one batted an eye when they stopped big tobacco from giving out prizes and while i have never meet anyone who bought smokes for the Marlboro hoodie, or Joe camel inflatable raft, i know myself, my children, and plenty of other kids, and kids at heart, who have gone for the Kids meal for the associated toy.
  15. Semi auto center-fire rifle for no other reason then the love of shooting
  16. You know i have heard this debate many times but i have never caught the irony of trying defend illegal immigration to the current controlling population by explanation how bad our own illegal immigration destroyed the past controlling population.
  17. I whole heartily agree with this. In fact recently the German Chancellery took some flack for saying such a thing but was backed up by some Turkish officials because they understand that a common language is the first step to understanding.
  18. I think most have compassion We just disagree on how to alleviate the distress. To be honest, and i don't mean this as an attack on you, i find many times when one side accuses the other side of lacking compassion they really mean acceptance of the behavior.( and maybe that is not what you mean). We can be compassionate on this issue and still expect the rule to be upheld just as the church can be compassionate to members with same sex attraction and still say " these are the rules".
  19. I have read that Mickey Mouse actually get the most wright in votes each year. Thinking of changing my name:D
  20. Personal i think Revelation and the end of the world stuff is metaphorical and individual more or less. I don't think we are asked to have food storage because Radical Islam (as an example) will soon wipe out the US anymore then they needed it to protect themselves from the Commies 50 years ago. However i have seen it save individuals during local and personal events. I don't think the wicked will burn (ala literal fire) but as a longing "Oh no they were right, i should have been better" I could be wrong, but that is my take on it.
  21. Yes. Even non religious legal marriages (that meet 1st Presidency definition of 1 man 1 women) by non priesthood holders are. Otherwise my Bishop, and countless others, would be in trouble for giving the Priesthood, callings, Temple recommends, baptism to converts and part-member families who live in sin.
  22. Doesn't the bible warn against that;) :D I love thunder storms myself as well
  23. I think it would fall into the caffeine thing. We might be forgoing blessing by not following the Prophets (assuming the Ensign and Young women manuals represent the Prophets thoughts on the subject) thoughts on that but we will not know until later. All we know is that while the church has frowned upon the subject (both subjects actually*) neither prevent blessings such as priesthood, baptism, temple attendance etc, which is what i believe Intrigued was referring to. (*If one can understand or The wow teaches habit forming drugs are bad, recognize the church has published the dangers of caffeine in it's publications and called it a habit forming drug over the last 30 years but claim it is ok because there are no withheld blessing, then they should be able to understand this view on tattoos.)
  24. As a kid i used to feel sorry for the Bishop kids for this sort of reason. As an adult and father it has come into perspective. What is a Bishops Job? To spiritual guide his ward, help them repent, keep them on the straight and narrow for the length of his calling 4- 7 years What is a Fathers Job? To spiritually guide his children, help them repent, keep them on the straight and narrow for the leaning of his calling 18 years legally, really for life. I can't think of anything that would necessitate confession to the bishop, who is a "stranger " in a temporary calling, that your father, who knows you better, loves you more and who's role is life long, should not be informed of.
  25. I think it is in there because the bible wasn't written for us. (ala this will help Seanette in 2010) but a compilation of writings, many made for the people in the day. IIRC, don't get into it that much, D&C has a few scriptures of so and so being called to do something like a mission. The census or the making of a portable tabernacle has as much relevance today as treating a bruise with tobacco but would have been useful during the time it was written. That's not to say the scriptures are useful to us obviously but that not everything in the scripture was meant for or is applicable to us.
