converts leaving the church
hordak replied to dahlia's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
The reason so many "anti" mormons use numbers against the churches truth claim is that many members use church numbers as an indication of truth. There was a quote back in the day about how no one could stop the church and some have taken this to mean growth. There are many reasons others have touched upon. One i would add is "milk before meat"/ church history. The church has a "colorful history" (not anymore "odd" then religion or other churches in general) that isn't really taught in an official capacity. Some members, even life long members only find out about things from other sources and "feel lied to" or read it out of context. There has been an effort to "inoculate" members recently (Faithful member Richard bushman wrote a history of Joseph Smith, the church is working on the Joseph Smith papers etc.) and i think this will help. I would also say there is not a lot to go through to convert. Some religions (Judaism IIRC) require a year of study /practice before conversion. Other churches have mandatory classes that must be taken. I have seen Missionaries asking people to set baptism dates on the second visit. Don't fall into the "Church growth= truth" trap. Wicca is actually the fastest growing religion if your looking for the "popular vote":) If your looking to avoid pitfall i would say. 1. Know that church leaders, past and present are human, 2 Know that not everything that doesn't come from the church is a lie. Much of the"anti" Mormon "propaganda" is based on some truth. It will be unofficial, it will be slanted, but that doesn't mean it's not"true" to some extent Most important 3. Rely on the spirit -
Is it Mormon college students? I.E. BYU students or Mormon, college students? I.E. UofM student, who happens to be lds.

I don't know for sure, but have heard and seen pictures that missionary males in the places in the south pacific wear dresses. Known as lava lavas -

Who are you there to please? I wouldn't worry about it. -
I think women are "expected" to stay home but think it is more of a generational thing that will catch up with the times, like views on birth control. For clarification purposes i agree with the proclamation, men provide necessities and protection women provide nurture, but it's the application that can be behind the times. In today's society people see a man working 40 hours a week and think he's a good provider. They see a mother staying at home and think she must be a great nurture. What they don't see is a man at home teaching his children the value of hard work, fairness, service, how to fix things, how to control emotions etc. These skills can be far more necessary then the new bike or game that could be bought with the money earned. What they don't see in the mother who comes home after a 12 hour day and wants to unwind by running a bath for the kids then snuggling up with them and reading books till bed time, where as a man might want to unwind by catching up on football. So i think the principal is correct, men provide, women nurture, but the idea that the only way to nurture is to be at home for a mother, and the only way a father can provide is by paying the bills is wrong. I have met women who were not better nurtures by staying home, and fathers who made great money, but were horrible at providing actual necessities.

If aspiring is wrong someone better call Salt Lake. Can't tell you how many we sang I hope they call me on a mission;) I think like all things it comes down to intent. Aspiring to be a good spiritual leader so if you get called as Bishop = Good. Aspiring to be Bishop because you know you will do a better Job the Bro Jones = bad.

I think it is a good thing if the Judge didn't do what he was supposed to. The juriors need to know what is required for conviction. Everyone deserves a fair trial regardless of the crime they are accused of. Plus i think it shows that Utah. a "Mormon" state is more interested in justice then distancing itself from it's polygamous roots( with an unfair trial for a polygamist), as would be an easy accusation had they overlooked this.

No. Next time he (i'm assuming a guy here) is eating a nice chicken sandwich you should rip it from his mouth and stop on it while proclaiming "I will not let you cheat":D Obviously you're speaking about supplemental protein what's the diff between 50 grams of protein in a shake or eating an extra steak for dinner? As far as Creatine is concerned it helps you work harder and recover faster. It doesn't make you grow like Dr Jeckles formula. Would drinking a caffeine so you could stay awake and study longer be cheating on a test?

Ah that's your problem. You picked the wrong Branch. J/K USAF vet/spouse. I was thinking about it the other day that they might be more necessary in other branches whom are further from civilization.
-
Wouldn't apply if you buy the LGT theory presented by FAIR and FARMS. They should be going south, if their trying to get the BoM lands.
-
What branch are you in? Every base i have been to has at least 1 ward in the area. LDS Maps I don't think you will find very many, permanent military stations without an lds ward with in a few miles. Unless your out in Edwards AFB.

He was wrong.IMO And I'm sure the purpose of using physical force on a trespassers is to remove them from said property. In this case the kids were fleeing , no more threat and he "chose" probably in a rage to chase them down. Video says "He thought he was being robed, he was afraid" So being afraid these guys might be a threat to his family he decideds to chase them down as the leave and bring them into his home:rolleyes: I think the parents of the kids are going to far and should let this guy alone, let the kids think twice, but he was out of line.

Not sure of the Reg but i'm fairly certain you can not be married at a FOB. Even if you could 1. it wouldn't be a good idea, in deployed location some people tend to forget about real life and participate and make choices the wouldn't make at home (hence the high divorce rate.) and since it isn't real life it would be the worst possible location to choose a life partner. 2. it wouldn't be a temple marriage. Getting married by (LDS) Chaplin Jones, Protestant Chaplin Smith, or Ms. Peacock (JOP) is exactly the the same.

I don't think there is much need or incentive for LDS chaplains. Local wards take care of service members at home, the authority/ approval to administer sacrament can be given to members going on deployments, and a theology degree is worthless for lds in most cases. (I.E. Go to BYU for engineering, join service, leave service for engineering job.Go to BYU study theology (,IIRC they just added some courses to help people wanting to be Chaplains), Leave service, go back to school. I'm sure it's nice to speak with one,but with a member driven church i don't see why hearing a talk from Chaplin Jones, would be more assuring then from Private Jones. As at home you are taught more by other members then by the Bishop. Here's a question. Is a Chaplain a Bishop? And if so does he only retain his authority in the deployment field? Because every base i have been to had the local ward take care of military and families. It is interesting to know they exist.

I'm a life long member, have a tattoo, and have been considering a couple more. Some members may look down on it but it's not something that keeps you from any church function, rite etc.

I thought her break down of a talk (GIVING THE TALK ITSELF) was spot on and matches 80% of the talks i have heard all across the USA. Though she might be painting the prep time with a broad brush. It's funny because it true

Do not join the church for the "community" "support" . I have seen it happen . Just as members can leave for the wrong reasons (I.E.the people offend them/ they find the social aspect stiffing ) investigators can convert for the wrong reason (the people amaze them /they like the social aspect) If you join do so for the right reason. I've been a member my whole life and have no idea where i am supposed to live.

Sure are alot of typos. This article makes the same mistake that many do on this subject by referring to those against ILLEGAL aliens as "anti-immigrant " Calling them "anti immigrant" activist is like calling those who oppose theft selfish because they will not share. It is an appeal to emotion, to "soften the issue" and make those opposed seem more evil. I have never met anyone who was opposed to immigration. It's the breaking of the laws, the ILLEGAL part they don't like.

Depends when it is used. For religious purposes i say Ahmen For casual agreement. "That is a beautiful car." "Aymen"

I kinda agree. particularly on point 3 You know Pam, this is a great opportunity for me to post "Scotland the brave" to prove her correct

Actually views based on looks/ when aging can be quite different. As stated before i had very strict parameters when it came to weight.( body fat) My wife got huge during her pregnancies and after losing the weight she has the stretchmarks and some extra skin. She wants to get a tummy tuck, but i'm the one saying she don't need to due to the risk. This is interesting because i have known chain smokers who lived to 80-90 while my mother who walked 4 miles a day, never drank anything harder then water , and lived the WoW to the t died at 50. There are exceptions to every rule but saying overweight = unhealthy is the same as saying smoking is unhealthy. It is a general rule supported by medical science. In fact being military affiliated i know plenty of smokers who can smoke (pun intended) your average American, in a 2 mile run. I don't think snow is purely advocating looks, i certainly wouldn't. But All people have standards, and some is based on looks. If that is all that matters then you could call it shallow, but to quote snow
