  1. I like this example. Yep, I'd love one too. I've started looking into quantum mechanics and I think particle theory too. Is either or both of these what they call string theory? Yep, I'm writing a sci-fi novel and do believe I have understood the difference between weight and mass. Whatever your mass is it stays the same unless you have a way of changing it, such as disintegrating a huge portion of a moon or planet would change its mass. Does this problem of maintaining physical things moving bother many physicists? Is this why it is still called a theory even though the mathematics for it are very good? When was this Dark Energy discovered? Hmm, hadn't realized there was a force like Dark Energy working against gravity. I need to learn more about it. I've been learning about graviton's too. Do you think that if it is found that graviton's exist that will replace the portion of Einstein's theory that spacetime is warped? Can you go to CERN and use theirs? Could anyone with interest go there and set up experiments? That is part of what bothers me why physicists say gravity is so weak and yet I feel it very strongly keeping me on earth.
  2. Thanks! It is some of the simplest things that elude me such as the fact that I am used to this warped space and can't detect minor changes.
  3. Yeah, that theory sets aside a lot to give optimal conditions and illustrate what would happen. And if you are a geologist then I may just have some other questions for you. Hmm, I'll need to think about this more. Fine with me, I just wanted to be sure I understood you before I gave my doubts about what you said. The thing that bothers me about gravity being generated by the earths rotation on its axis is that it seems to me to be too slow by itself to generate gravity since it takes 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis. And I probably know less than you about all this and am just using my limited learning and logic to try and understand while also asking others what they think and trying to learn from the theories physicists have put forth such as Newton and Einstein.
  4. I like elementary as it helps a person like me to understand and this video is very simple to understand. I've watched others that talked about general relativity that way. For some reason I just haven't been able to grasp the entire concept though. One thing that bugs me about that is I can see clearly how that effects a planet but not how that would affect me, especially if I were to be in a hole and digging ... Hmm that just might explain what I just looked at with what would happen if you dug a hole through the earth and jumped in. If space is warped even while you are underground that would explain why once you get to the center you would feel no gravity. But I don't see how space would be warped below the surface of the earth. I also have a hard time understanding how warped space could have any influence on me since I seem to be able to pass right through that same space when walking around and going up and down stairs.
  5. The math is beyond me at this time. I will have to brush up on my calculus to have any hope in understanding the formula's. I hadn't heard of the Cavendish Experiment and find it interesting. I may be blind but I looked at the diagram and I do not see a small x near the small ball to the right of the big ball. It looks to me like there is an h and n there but no x. Did I miss something with that diagram? Anddenex are you referring to the rotation of the earth on its axis or the rotation of the earth around the sun? Or both? So far in my quest to understand the source of gravity I am finding problems with each theory I find. Most likely this is due to my lack of knowledge and so I try to gain more in the hope it will increase my understanding of gravity.
  6. I know there are some here who like discussing things related to physics (the Traveler comes to mind). In the past few weeks my interest in physics has grown immensely. Probably because of a novel I am working on but I think that simply sparked the interest. Anyway, for anyone who has pondered these questions or have thoughts I have some questions I'd like your perspective on. I of course can't handle the mathematics for such things yet and likely don't have much of the physics terms learned yet. Some of the questions may delve into astronomy too. Theories about gravity seem to indicate that all mass has gravity and yet the gravity does not become strong enough to be felt until an object is about moon size. Why is that? Or is it that not everything with mass has gravity only the large objects? Is there any proof that smaller objects, say the size of a marble, have gravity?
  7. Interesting. It sounds like what I remember learning growing up is remembered wrong or policy about it has changed. The high priest group leader recently began joking with me that I should be a high priest and that his proximity to me could somehow make it happen. I keep telling him that it doesn't work that way and that for me to become a high priest I have to receive a calling that requires me to be ordained a high priest. I am probably the oldest elder in the elders quorum although I have seldom gone because I usually have callings that keep me else where during elders quorum meetings.
  8. I've wondered about some of these questions. From what I understand there are other worlds with other mortals who look just like us. However, it is my opinion that God does not ever intend us to meet any of them while we are mortal so no matter how good our space ships become we will never be able to use them to get to another planet with mortal life on it. I think it also likely we will never find positive proof of life anywhere else. I don't know why I feel like this because I would love to be able to get in a space ship like Star Trek and go to other planets with life on them. I haven't thought too much about the dinosaurs but remember something I think someone told me which was likely speculation that the dinosaur bones were simply some of the material available and used when the earth was created. I am more inclined to think they did exist and died for some unknown reason after Adam and Eve left the garden of eden.
  9. I like keeping fish too and have mostly kept fresh water fish. I haven't done much with the tanks I have right now. I currently keep two plecos in a tank at work right in front of my desk. At home I have an aquatic turtle (red eared slider). I want to get another tank that I can put fish in at home. I like molly's the most, but also plattys, gouramis, and fiddler and red claw crabs. The crabs never lasted very long for me and were always trying to get out of the tank and sometimes succeeded. I remember one day going into my living room and seeing my crab running across the living room floor.
  10. It is a different approach I am trying to understand how things are. I believe that understanding how Satan operates and what he can and can't do is useful information and I don't remember ever reading or being taught about why he doesn't show himself to people whereas I do remember being taught as to why God and Jesus don't show themselves to everyone.
  11. Welcome! I've been a member all my life, left the church for a few years, and returned about 24 years ago and am astounded by the things I am learning by talking with people here. You will get lots of help here. A question that came to my mind is that you indicated your wife is anti-most everything including anti-mormon. I think it is great that you want to return to the church and think it will help you a lot to understand as best you can why your wife is anti-mormon as that will help you create less friction with her and may give you an idea how to get her to change her mind about letting you take your children with you to church. Do your children attend church with her?
  12. Hi jdcofc, I read a good portion of that section. One difference I noted is that I did not feel the same way reading that as I have felt reading the Book of Mormon or Doctrine and Covenants we have. I can't say I know much about the Community of Christ. But wouldn't mind learning some about it. Our Doctrine and Covenants only goes up to section 138. So that is one difference. I'm guessing that your section 163 is the one that was added when your church's name changed. Would that be correct? I've heard that the Doctrine and Covenants your church uses has had sections removed from it from time to time as well as sections added. Is that right? And if so then do all the sections get renumbered or do you simply have gaps between section numbers.
  13. I guess I asked for all those smart alec remarks;) about the roads and traffic lights and such. But, since I seldom went to 7-11's, McDonalds, and Burgerkings down town I don't actually remember those. The only food places I would have gone to would have been in the two malls that are no more. I frequented a coin shop across from the JCPenney building which I remember because my dad used to work at JCPenney. And I remember a Dutch Store which is East a few blocks from that JCPenney office building. Is that old train engine still in Liberty or Pioneer Park. I remember going inside it before they put a fence around it so you couldn't. I spent a lot of time at ZCMI mall and Crossroads mall. Wow both of those gone. I've never been in the new Conference Center and don't remember seeing it nor its construction at all. I remember Sugarhouse because I used to go to a comic book store up there. I don't remember the road between temple square and the Joseph Smith Memorial building being closed and becoming a park. Even the Salt Palace and U of U has changed, wow. At least Trolley Square is still the same. I remember going there a number of times. I remember the Delta Center. I think I need to find a time to go visit Salt Lake City again.
  14. Until I saw the thread about City Creek I had never heard of it and my dad lives in North Salt Lake. When I saw where it was placed in a video just now I was left wondering if anything I remember from downtown Salt Lake City from when I grew up near there is still there at all. I moved from Salt Lake City in Sept 1997 and the last time I was back there was in 2002 if I am remembering correctly. I never saw the light rail before seeing that video of City Creek although I knew SLC had light rail. That picture of City Creek at night with the fountains looks real nice. From the video it almost looked like City Creek was where ZCMI was. Is ZCMI still there? Is the tall JCPenney building still there? Are there other major changes besides City Creek that I haven't heard of in downtown Salt Lake City?
  15. A very good point that many people don't look for Satan and that is why they don't see him. I do not look for him and really don't ever want to meet him. On the other hand I don't think Joseph was expecting to see Heavenly Father and Jesus when he offered that prayer when he was 14 and yet they chose to show themselves to him. Nor did he expect to feel the power of Satan the way he did right before they came to him. Joseph just wanted an answer to his question. annewandering, you mentioning you have felt Satan reminded me that I too have felt his presence and did not like it. When I started this thread I was simply curious because I have only heard a few stories of Satan appearing to people and I figured since he wouldn't care about the test life is for us nor faith nor any of that stuff that he might have taken a more direct approach. Thanks to everyone's replies I understand a bit better why he doesn't even when he could.
  16. With the questions I raise, I do not mean to minimize the pain and suffering you are experiencing which I can tell by your words is great, but also keep in mind the sudden decision that your children are not allowed to play with their children is impacting them. Have you considered how your children feel? Or how baffled they might be if they don't know why they are not allowed to play together anymore? Has it been 8 months since they have played with the children from the other family? Have you noticed if they still talk to those children at church? I hope you can find peace and more happiness than you have now and that you are able to resolve all the problems associated with the events you have described in this thread. Remember that your Heavenly Father loves you and wants you to overcome all this and He is there to help you.
  17. I searched for references of devil in 2 Nephi chapter 2 before my previous reply but did not find anything that seemed to mean "overcome evil and devil adversaries" I'll have to read the entire chapter and see if I get that meaning out of it. And maybe I should have searched for evil instead of or in addition to devil.
  18. Thanks! That article is full of interesting information. Well my first inclination is to think that if there is no need for a devil for people to do evil then why even bother to have one, especially when God can control everything the devil is allowed to do. But I guess it's just another aspect of this test called life.
  19. I've used the Internet for many many years to get help I needed to parent better. This started soon after my separation and intensified once I was granted custody of my four children, the youngest of which was my daughter of 5 years old. I had planned to rely on her mom to teach her all the girl things and so hadn't given any thought to any of that and once I was granted custody I knew I needed help and a lot of it. I joined a parenting forum and found many mothers with daughters willing to help me. One helped me via posts while I was shopping for nail polish to get nail polish that was suitable for a little girl. One taught me with words how to braid hair so that Sharleen didn't have to always go to school with brushed hair or have it in pig tails. And the list goes on of all the things I have learned to be able to help my daughter and of course my sons too by getting the opinions of parents about how they handled problems and then I used those to help me decide what I would try to solve problems I had. I am currently a super moderator on a parenting forum that I've been a part of for years. Since it is not the easiest thing for me to have time/make time and to even make friends with people I meet and associate with, using the Internet has been crucial for me to learn about many things that I had no clue about before and which knowledge I believe has helped me become a better parent. Of course there are many things I don't like about the Internet and I do use parental controls to block content.
  20. I seem to lack in a lot of areas and thinking about aspects of the gospel is one in spite of all I have actually learned. I didn't think we would know and understand everything just because the millennium started and so we will of course have to be learning which is what you reminded me of with the line upon line precept upon precept. I also would have thought there would be no arguments once the influence of Satan was removed. Again I ascribed more to his role in such a way that without him around then we would all do good and not do any evil. And maybe that could still be correct but that it won't make us all think alike just because he can't tempt us. I just came to another realization. Because during the millennium Satan will be bound means that the plan of salvation could not be frustrated without his presence. Although this is not to say that his role is not needed but it gives me another way of considering why he is active here on earth because his inactivity wouldn't stop the plan but it seems it would still have an affect on opposition in all things.
  21. But I figured that the reason in the millennium that everyone would eventually join the true church was because of the lack of temptation of Satan and once everyone does convert then there would no longer be an opposition to the true church.
  22. With the faith aspect of it I doubt Satan cares about that but it is more as trubludru said in that Satan doesn't want to confirm himself to too many people so that he can keep trying to convince many that he doesn't exist.
  23. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of the only reason we do things we should not is because of Satan and his minions tempting us. It does make it easier to view the war in heaven by thinking that someone tempting us is not required to do wrong since I am not aware of there being anyone around to tempt Lucifer to rebel against God. I also was of the opinion that since Satan would be bound for those thousand years that temptations would simply go away and so that the testing could be complete for anyone born during the millennium that was why Satan would be released for a short time after the millennium so that he could introduce opposition again for all those that had not experienced it. Thanks, this gives me more to think about.
  24. Thanks for that scripture. As I was writing that I would think Satan does as he pleases I was not thinking of the limitation that we will not be tempted above that which we can handle. It is logical that if Satan could do anything he wanted that scripture would no longer be true. However, Satan appearing to people just to show himself does not in my mind immediately make it a temptation beyond our capability to resist. Of course I am sure if he went to the trouble to show himself to someone he wouldn't just stand there, introduce himself, and then leave. You really think many people see Satan? Do they tell the world they have in a similar way the Joseph Smith told the world that he had seen our Heavenly Father and Jesus? I have very little experience with batterers and their friends. I didn't ask why more people don't see Heavenly Father and/or Jesus because I've been taught that we are supposed to have faith that they exist and not need to see them to do as they command.
  25. Do you think you must live up to every covenant, principle, and doctrine to use the label Mormon? I believe that if a person is trying to live the gospel as taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints then that person can certainly use the label Mormon if they want to. I think many people use label's for themselves out of habit and/or because they are in favor of what the label implies even if they don't live up to much the label implies. Others use labels to portray to others their heritage, what they do and/or are interested in with few words. I label myself a writer even though in the genre I currently write I am unpublished. I label myself a sailor even though I only started sailing last year. If I were a chessmaster I would use that label today even though it has been more than 5 years since I have played a game. I am not a chessmaster but am an intermediate player, but mentioning chessmaster illustrates better how that label could be used to denote an achievement and/or level of knowledge rather than something I am currently practicing.
