My dad had a suitcase-style Compaq computer with a ginormous floppy drive. No mouse, though.

Well, I was never a young "lad" and I'm only almost 28, so my generation is a little more recent, but I still have classic toys. Some of my favorites were Strawberry Shortcake (I still have all my original Strawberry Shortcake toys), Care Bears, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch Kids (all of which have recently been revived in popularity), and Rainbow Brite (which has yet to see a re-surge). However, perhaps one of the most treasured toys I ever played with (and still have to this day), are the American Girls dolls. For those of you who don't know, the Samantha doll is being retired at the end of this year.

Another good mental health break song. YouTube - GUMMY BEAR SONG ( funny )

My dad loves this song, but he always thinks that it's Lionel Richie's song, because LR sang it at the Los Angeles Olympics in '84.

Heehee...you're too funny. Thanks for the video!

My mom was released earlier this year as RS President in her ward. When she was called, she dealt with some interesting problems. The lesson time was very often cut in half, because the announcement time took too long. It would go something like this: 1st Counselor: Sisters, I just want to remind you that Sister Jones' mother is in the hospital, and she's not doing well. It would be nice if you could take the time to give her a call this week or -- Sister Smith: That's not what I heard! I talked to her last night and she said her mother is doing much better and will probably be coming home today or tomorrow. Sister Young: Well, I called her this morning before I came over and she said that things had gotten worse overnight again. Sister Johnson: Well I made cookies this morning and took them over to her on my way to church and she was heading out the door to pick her mother up at the hospital to bring her home. Sister Nelson: I got a text message from her during Sunday School, and she said that her mother was just transferred back to the ICU and it's really not looking good. There was so much bickering and even yelling across the room that some days it had my mom in tears sitting in Relief Society, wondering how she could bring the sisters together to help them see the bigger picture of whatever was going on, Sister Jones still needed their support. In my own ward, we have a lot of students. We are not a student ward, but there are many many medical, dental, and law students, and medical residents that live within my ward boundaries. We have many "-ites": medicalites, dentites, lawites, podiatrites, anesthesiologites, permanites (those who actually just live here), and so on. Somehow, our Relief Society isn't terribly divided. I, however, feel like the only one left out. I am neither a student family not a long-time resident. I am a 'permanite' but I've only been here 15 months. I don't quite fit in with any one group, but I have enough friends. My Relief Society President is somewhat of an anomaly, though. She's 31 years old, has been married 'only' four years, and has no children. Her husband is a med student, so she works a lot. In fact, she's currently what would typically be referred to as a 'career woman.' She's high-powered, travels to three or four cities in a week, wears trendy suits and fabulous peep-toe heels. She has a great sense of fashion, and a great body with which to show it off. And she's a Democrat. She has confided in me that she feels sometimes inadequate and mostly out of place as the leader of the women in this ward, who are almost all mothers, many from Utah (and most very Republican), and either quite young (married young) or several decades older than she is. She has a whole set of issues to deal with other than gossip, which I don't think is actually too much of a problem in our ward. She deals much more with welfare issues. Anyway, this doesn't really respond to the topic, but just throws out other scenarios. As women I think we like to commiserate and certainly have a need to know that we're not alone.

I think it was a few months after I turned 20 that I had my first "I'm old" moment, when I realized that I was now older than about half the missionaries out there. Then I went on my mission (at 21 1/2) and realized that missions don't turn boys into men...they're still boys, but with a greater understanding of and love for the Gospel. But they're still immature.

Questions Regarding John The Baptist
Wingnut replied to Prodigal_Son's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
To answer your first question...I don't know. But now that you bring it up, I'm really interested. By that time, Jerusalem had been taken captive several times, and many of the House of Israel carried off into other lands, causing the tribes of Israel to be scattered. This was prophesied due in part to the unrighteous choices of the people as a whole. I suppose it's possible that so many of those carried off didn't have the Priesthood because (1) they weren't Levites, and (2) they were unrighteous. If that were the case, then it sounds plausible to me that Zacharias might have been in a "last man standing" type of position. I'm going to be thinking about this now. Very interesting. On your second question. I think that it's indicative of John's being foreordained, even from the womb. Or it could have something to do with the specificity of John's calling. It made me immediately think of Acts 19 (the story...although it took me a little while to find the actual reference). Paul was visiting with some disciples, and he asked them if they'd received the Holy Ghost yet. They basically tell him they've never heard of such a thing, that they were baptized "unto John's baptism." John's assignment/mission in life was to baptize people, and prepare the way of the Lord. He baptized people by water, not by the Spirit. But we know (as evidenced by the scripture you quoted) that he had the Holy Ghost himself, he just wasn't authorized to confer that gift on others. That's the Gospel of Wingnut, chapter 12, verse 6-16. Hope you enjoy! -
LDS apostle's impromptu warning circles the globe
Wingnut replied to MrNirom's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
That's part of what I think is silly about this, not to mention annoying (in the spam-like nature of the thing). We already know that we're in the last days. Okay, maybe not the "end of days" but getting darn close to it. Why do we need a sacrament meeting talk that may or may not have happened (and certainly wasn't intended for the Church as a whole) to tell us that? Haven't we been told for years that we need to get out of debt (and stay out of it), get our education, have food storage, grow a garden, teach our children correct principles, stand in holy places, and anything else that might help us prepare for a "catastrophe?" What's the big deal about this talk? -

LDS apostle's impromptu warning circles the globe

Yes, and isn't this about the third time this talk has been circulated on this very website in the last three weeks? -

US News & World Report magazine puts out college rankings each year...I don't know if they do reviews at all, but they might link to places that do.

Hahaha...you sound awfully passionate about this issue. We had our ward's Trunk or Treat last Friday night, so the kids still get to do the traditional festivities, but now they get double the candy (oh great!) I don't like it just because I don't like the name of it. It annoys me. And I have a hard enough time trying to come up with costumes for people...why do I have to dress up the butt of my car, too?
-
If all your friends were bragging about a supercool campaign button, would you do it too? Just kidding. This did make me laugh, though.
-
I think there are much more clever ways of doing it. I have a good friend who is one of 5 or 6 and their initials are all JKH (until the girls got married). I also have another good friend who is one of 7 and all their names have the combination 'ya' in them: Bryan, Mya, Tyas, Tanya, Wyatt, Malya, and Ryan.

Are you dressed as Indiana Jones? Or just a cowboy?

It's probably a lot faster to just close a thread than to delete individual posts while more are getting put up. If you don't like it, then don't break the rules. It's pretty simple.

I love your new avatar, Moksha!

That's why I would vote no. If there were to be an area of the site that included games, that would be different.

I would be, but that's because I'm guessing that it will fizzle out...just like this thread already did. :) Again, not that it's up to met or that I have anything to do with it.
