I think sometimes a book is put on the Classic list because it was written well even if not interesting. Some are there because they address some social issue important to the time perhaps breaking ground for social change. Sadly some are there because they are intellectually pretentious. I remember a truly horrible book we had to read in english 101. Steppenwolf I think. I still remember the boxes which were metaphors for something obscure. Arg. lol.

I have always wondered about this too. It would seem to make sense that sexual desires come at puberty. When I was a kid there was the b/f g/f thing but it was a social thing not sexual. Perhaps some are confused by wanting friendship with same sex with the social demand for pairing up at very early ages?

This is so true. I have had two sons, a daughter and a soninlaw over there. None were harmed, much anyway, physically but one is very badly wounded from ptsd. It is a constant struggle for him every day and for the ones around him. He has told me he would do it again without hesitation. He has said many times how much he appreciates those who remember the soldiers and what they do. As a mom I thank you for remembering them.

Amazing how you can learn the most interesting things in the oddest places! Think how much we all learned in OJ's trial. I haven't followed that trial. Maybe I should have. :)

I do not accept that children of criminal are born to be bad. In googling the idea that kids are born bad there are some interesting studies that have been done. What they point to is that we may be born with genetic traits that make life more difficult. If we know that then it can point out flaws that need to be worked on but not accept as unchangable or leading to a criminal life.

It is true that it is very hard to change a pedophile. Trying to justify it by that reasoning is pretty hard to stomach. I read the comments section as well. Some are saying children can chose. Well let me tell you they cant. They can be groomed to accept it though since they are too young to know what is happening to them. That is hardly a license or acceptance or choice. These people will keep pushing and we know that societies standards can be changed by constant repetitions of the old "it is normal, its choice and if you dont accept it you are a bigot and mean to those who cant change" rhetoric. Don't be surprised if movies and tv shows start showing up as cutting edge showing the pedophiles justifications.

Actual requests received by the Family History Department of the LDS Church. These are extracts from REAL letters: I would like to find out if I have any living relatives or dead relatives or ancestors in my family. He and his daughter are listed as not being born. My Grandfather died at the age of 3. We are sending you 5 children in a separate envelope. The wife of #22 could not be found. Somebody suggested that she might have been stillborn - what do you think? I am mailing you my aunt and uncle and 3 of their children. Enclosed please find my Grandmother. I have worked on her for 30 years without success. Now see what you can do. This family had 7 nephews that I am unable to find. If you know who they are, please add them to the list. We lost our Grandmother, will you please send us a copy? A 14-year-old boy wrote: "I do not want you to do my research for me. Will you please send me all of the material on the Welch line, in the US, England and Scotland countries? I will do the research." Will you please send me the name of my first wife? I have forgotten her name.

A Bishop was holding a leadership meeting. A baby in the nearby nursery was crying, making it difficult for the Bishop to conduct the meeting. He excused himself and left the room. After a couple of minutes he returned and continued the meeting -- not a sound was heard from the baby. At the end of the meeting, one ward member asked him how he got the baby to be quiet. "Simple", said the Bishop. "I ordained him a High Priest and he went right to sleep."

A father was concerned that his family had received only ten of the monthly home teaching visits the previous year. He called one of his home teachers and said, "I love you brother, but how come you skipped some visits?" The home teacher kindly replied, "You don't expect us to come on Halloween and New Year's Eve do you?"

You might make this clear to him.

You have a hard row to hoe but if you do what you can God will help you. It would be best to be honest with your husband but keep in mind it is you that have changed the rules in your marriage, for the better, but he is not going to know that at first. Let the temple be a support not a bitter reminder. It can remind you that the Lord is nearby. If you are upset just take a walk and enjoy the grounds to calm and aid you. You might have a chat with the bishop and tell him your circumstances. He may have some ideas to help you along. Keeping the Book of Mormon under your pillow sounds like a good idea. It is close to you that way. :) Keep the faith. It will work out.

I do not think classic is necessary to be good and readable. Most of the books I read are not classics and never will be. Yet many of them are educational, well written and enjoyable. Probably the closest to classic would be the Tony Hillerman books. While they are mysteries they are more about the culture of the Navajo people both past and present. The author, not Navajo, was well respected by them which is, no doubt, why they allowed him to learn so much about their beliefs. He is very respectful of them in his books.

You guys are so much better at saying what I was trying to say and adding in ideas I hadnt thought of. I would like to add a thought to the math analogy. When we actually got to, was it Uranus, with a probe we discovered half of what we were sure we knew was wrong, or so at least one of the major scientists said. I think we can apply this to the gospel as well. When we get away from the basics we go into areas that we may think we know, or can figure out, but do we really, and is it important that we do?
