  1. I think the defense has forgotten which side of the case they are trying to make. Unless they have something amazing up their sleeves, which can turn this around, I think they are making a better case for the prosecution.
  2. I have developed a habit, that I am hoping I can get more people hooked on, because it really is important... It started when my honey was working, whenever I would hear sirens (not knowing if it was him or even worse FOR him) I would immediately stop and pray for him. After a few months of doing this I realized that EVERY time I heard a siren I wanted to pray, because whenever you hear a siren SOMEONE needs those prayers. After several times of praying individually for everyone involved: -the driver of the emergency vehicle with the siren on - that they would drive carefully, and get to where they needed to go safely -the people around the emergency vehicle who were driving, that they would drive carefully so there wouldn't be any 'wake effect' accidents -the people that needed help that the emergency vehicle was responding to (assuming there was one) -the caller, who was one the phone (assuming there is one) who is despirate for help -the dispatcher who is taking the call that they would say the right things -the radio dispatcher that they would handle the call well -and anyone else effected by the emergency situation I realized that doing this every time I heard a siren took quite a while, so Heavenly Father and I came to an agreement, that I would say a simple prayer, but that in saying it, I was praying for each of the groups of people individually. So now, I simply pray, "Heavenly Father please bless those people, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen." (Unless my honey is working, then I will add him in specifically.) It would really mean a lot to me if I knew that there were other people out there, who when they heard sirens would do the same thing. I know my honey has to use his siren a lot, and if I know that when he does people are praying for him it would give me a lot of comfort. I know that there are some people who live in areas where sirens are a constant sound, and they may not want to pray every time they hear one, but I am asking if you guys would consider joining me in these prayers. I would really appreciate it! And I think our emergency service workers would appreciate it too! The funniest thing that has happened to me with this, is now, when I am sleeping, if I hear sirens, I will stop whatever I am doing in my dream and pray while I'm sleeping. It really has become second nature! Thank you guys in advance! :)
  3. Anne I agree... Even if you don't want to do anything physically to help, AT LEAST call 911!
  4. First, congrats on your baptism!!! I agree with the others who say to be honest and open with him. It's better to know that you are building your relationship on a solid foundation! Also, don't beat yourself up over this. If you have repented, and been baptized, God has forgiven you, and you should forgive yourself! GOOD luck!
  5. That is bizare... Why did they have to dance blocking the exit? On the other hand, I saw people making their way thru the dancers TO the exit, so I think pepper spray was a bit of over kill. I wonder what the PD's side of it is. I don't think I would use pepper spray in an innocent crowd tho, and not before CLEARLY ordering them to disperse... hummm... I donno, that's a little odd. As for the other clip = hilarious!
  6. Exactly. I don't know why everyone always tries to make this stuff so dang complicated!
  7. "Not everyone likes to or can eat foods that contain alcohol. It is a myth that alcohol completely burns off during any sort of cooking. While alcohol will evaporate during cooking, the amount that evaporates depends on the cooking time and technique. Hit the wrong combination, and you could leave over 75 percent of the alcohol content lingering in your food---an unpleasant surprise for those needing to avoid it. Uncooked foods will, of course, retain all alcoholic content. Use a nonalcoholic substitute if you want to be completely sure your food is alcohol-free. (resource 1) Fruit juices, particularly red grape juice and cranberry juice, are suitable substitutes. Watch the sugar content; if you are substituting dry, or nonsweet, wine, use a less-sweet fruit juice. Broths and flavored vinegars are good, nonsweet substitutes as well. Use the same amount of the substitute liquid as you would dry wine." Read more: Substitutes for Dry Red Wine in Cooking | eHow.com Substitutes for Dry Red Wine in Cooking | eHow.com
  8. I have to say that this thread has opened my understanding of the idea of being one big eternal family. After all we are all related having come from Adam and Eve! As well as being spirit sisters and brothers... It is awesome! I love the idea of being related to all of you, and loving you as family. Ive always wanted to go to one of those family reunions where everyone is wearing the same color shirt... Hey! Let's do that! We can all wear white!
  9. I am an expert in this area, and I would be glad to share my method for getting my computer to work. First, my boyfriend and some guy from some internet company put in this magical box with lots of blinky lights on it that psychically talks to my laptop somehow. If for some reason my laptop stops talking to the magic box then I yell, "Mister! my computer is broken!" and my boyfriend comes and takes my laptop away for a few minutes and then brings it back and it works again. Hope that helps!
  10. Thank you anne! I agree that she will still be my mom no matter where she is... I was just worried that there was some teaching saying that families don't exist outside the CK and that didn't seem right... As for giving up on her, no, I haven't! But she has told me that if God himself appeared before her and told her that this church was true she would not believe him because she, as a woman, could not be the head of the church (the prophet), then she knows that the church is not of good but of evil. She is a pretty hard core feminist, and dead set against the church because she doesn't feel there is equalitiy for women in it. My patriarchal blessing says that she will one day be prepared to hear the message, so that gives me hope. But today, her intense hatred of anything that doesn't follow her narrow vision of what is good (she refers to HF as 'she' and Godess rather than God, and doesn't believe the Bible is the word of God because it was 'written by men' with the goal of oppressing women, I could go on, and on, and on... and.... on.... ugh) makes me tend to think she probably wouldn't listen to our teachings, even after death, BUT my patriarchal blessing gives me hope! Sorry guys, that was just a little personal aside... Carry on!
  11. If we take the question literally, then, for me, the answer would be yes. I believe in free speech and I support a lot of people who disagree with the teachings of the church, BUT, I don't do anything like make dontations to abortion clinics. I think that the question is general because they want the member to probe their mind and think of anything they are doing that would be considered 'wrong'. They then rely on the spirit to bring out anything that could be considered 'wrong'. That's just a thought.
  12. Is this true? So even if I am sealed to my mother (who I am 99% sure won't make it to the CK - but I could be wrong!) and she doesn't make it then she isn't considered my mother? Or did I misunderstand? I always thought that you were still sealed to members of your family and even if some of you were in the CK and others were in the other two TKs you were still a 'family'?
  13. YaYa, first I want to say, you are NOT alone. second this is NOT your fault. The fact that you feel this way does not mean that you are defective in any way. It also does not mean that satan has any kind of control over your mind, to make you think 'bad' things. This is a medical problem, pure and simple. I know that reaching out for help is a scary thing, but you are an adult, and you can do this without anyone else knowing if you so choose. Being suicidal has a huge stigma attached to it. That is one of the biggest problems for people in your position, because once you admit you have a problem (which you already have) then you are afraid of how people will react. I hope that you see that people are primarily worried about you, and want to support you! You have already taken the first step, and things just get easier from here. Now you know how people react to it. They want to help. I don't know where you are in the scope of suicidal behavior. Some people just feel suicidal. Others have a detailed plan. Where would you say you are? Here is something to read if you are feeling suicidal Suicide: Read This First One thing I have learned in my battles with depression, and suicide attempts, is how truly unnecessary it is. The only reason we feel suicidal is because our ability to cope with our current situation is over whelmed by the pain we are feeling. At the time it seems like our only 'out'. But the problem with using suicide as the solution is that it creates so many more problems. The people around us would be hurt by our actions so much, it isn't worth doing. ESPECIALLY when there IS treatment! We CAN get better. This is what I think you should do. If you are feeling 'actively' suicidal, go to an ER. They deal with this every day, and it is an easy way to get your 'foot in the door' so to speak. They will help you find the right doctor and get set up with follow up appointments. If you are having an okay day, then go to (in person) a psychiatrist or a mental health counselor's office and let them know what is going on. They will get things started for you right away. If your community has a crisis center, you could go there as well. Remember, you are not alone. Pray about this. Sing "I am a child of God". but get yourself to where you can talk to someone about this. Even talking to your bishop is a good idea. I'm sure that he would be happy to go to an appointment with you to get this started if you don't want to go alone! I PROMISE you that you will feel better, like a huge weight has been lifted, when you first go in to talk to someone, and are totally honest about what you are feeling. Things can only get better from here! I'm praying for you sister... you can get thru this! THE MOST IMPORTANT THING right now tho is, that you cannot put this off. You need to do this TODAY. Call in sick to work, miss school. This is waaaay more important. Seriously. Turn off the computer and go... NOW! :)
  14. I have to appologize because my earlier posts were in reaction to the feelings that this could have been due to it happening in China. I wanted everyone to have their sensitivity level increase because it happens here too! I want to comment on the original story. I breaks my heart, and seeing that little girl's hands come up to shield her from the oncoming vehicle literally made tears come to my eyes. I am more upset with the bleeeep bleep bleeeepppp bleeping bleep driver <edited by poster so the moderators didn't have to do it... you are welcome!> who didn't see her in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, and then after hitting her, DIDN'T STOP. THAT pisses me off. In any case, it is a tragedy, and my heart goes out to the family! UGH!
  15. Here's another interesting bystander effect video
  16. Um guys, this isn't a problem that is confined to China. There have been a lot of cases here in the US where people who needed medical help, or were hit by cars, have been ignored. I can't find it, but I remember a video of a gal in CA who had a seizure at the pump at a gas station, and people were actually stepping over her body to use the gas pump and not helping her. There was another case: warning: video shows actual hit at 00:21 seconds in... after that you see his body laying in the street while people walk by. Hit-and-run accident; victim ignored - YouTube "This shocking video released by the Hartford Police Department shows how a man is struck by a car. Witnesses took no efforts to save this man until a police car, en-route to another emergency, came across the guy. No-one bothered to call 911." Here's another interesting video, it also mentions the above case, but mentions several others as well... it is about a man who tried to stop a mugging, was stabbed himself and lay bleeding and dying on the side walk for over an hour while people walked by, one took pictures but ignored him. In this old case Kitty Genovese was killed while 38 neighbors watched out their windows, her attacker left twice then came back to rape and then stab her again. She died.American society isn't any more vigilant in this than the Chinese. I found another video (much too graphic) about a policeman in India who was hacked and lay bleeding in the middle of a state highway, while probably a hundred people, including the health minister for the country and his convoy, milled around and watched. He begs for help as he lays bleeding to death, reaching out to people who are less than 3 feet away from him. It is truly horrible. This is all just a reminder for us to be better citizens and make sure that we respond when help is needed. I was on an ambulance service for 5 years, and I think that has made me more sensitive to emergency situations. I was working in an office type environment when I heard a loud crash and a cry. I jumped up from my desk and ran as fast as i could to help whoever needed help (a lady had a loaded file cabnet on a trolley and dropped it, she was okay). But the thing that amazed me was that in an office full of people no one else even moved. They all looked, but no one moved to help! My co-worker commented afterward, "Wow. I've never seen you move so fast!". In my opinion, EVERYONE should have jumped up and ran to help. I don't understand why people don't. I guess people are hesitant to get into situations where they don't know what to do. This is a SAFE, interesting video on the bystander effect...
  17. I had a problem with this too at my first temple recommend interview. I love, support, affiliate with and agree with my boyfriend, who is a non-member, and who had actually given me anti-mormon lit when I was investigating. The bishop told me that it refers to things such as poligamy (spelling?) and abortions. My mother has had an abortion in the past, and I still affiliate with her, so I wondered about that, but he said that didn't count either, so really I'm not sure what EXACTLY the guidelines are. I just answer the question no. But I wonder, could you work for an abortion clinic? Can you be a waitress that serves coffee and tea to customers, or a clerk who sells cigarettes? Where is the line drawn? It may be an issue that the spirit just has to deal with on a situational basis. Hummmmm.
  18. My bet would be, whoever stamped the bill wanted the exact response that they got here. They want to get under our skin and make us feel uneasy. I think that allah is just another word for God, and so there is no God but God... I don't have a problem with that. I do understand why someone would feel concerned about it, because they ARE trying to do something to upset us, so the best answer is a non answer. Just don't let them get to you.
  19. I don't mind people being bunched up in cities. Keeps them away from me.
  20. Something else we need to think about adding to our emergency supplies is medication. If you are on any kind of medication, imagine what would happen if suddenly you didn't have access to that? It can be hard to build up a supply, but this is what I have done... I always refill a couple of days (2-3 days) early. They ususally will do that for you, then I count whatever I have left over, put the old pills into the new pill bottle and put the excess (from the new pill bottle, so you don't accidentally keep medication that is expired) into my reserve. It takes some time to get up a months supply, but I think that is something that I have to do. I don't have a years supply, but I have saved up at least a couple of months worth. On point, I think that watching what happened in Katrina is a good guide for what could happen in any disaster. We need to know that the gov't ISN'T necessarily going to spring into action to come save us. Also, looking at those houses, submerged in water, I'm sure that most food storage didn't survive the flooding. We need to know how to take care of ourselves if something like that happened. If there was a major incident in my town I would grab my backpacking pack and put in what food I could, a couple of blankets, medication, all the ammo we have (which would be heavy), and our guns, my boyfriend, my dog, and I would go get my mom, and we would drive as far away from the city as our gas would get us. My goal would be to get into the mountains where we could live on game and fish. I don't think I would stick around town where the population is large and food and water is scarce. I have to admit my home storage is pitiful. I have one of the emergency kits from the church, and some pasta and canned beans, and a few gallons of water. I am kind of fighting the tide on this tho, because my non LDS boyfriend makes fun of me when I try to buy extra stuff for home storage. He throws my water out, and takes stuff out of the food basket in the grocery store if I tell him what I'm getting it for. Jerk. :) I have to remind myself that even IF I were able to get a good amount of home storage, I couldn't necessarily rely on it being there when I need it (ie flooding - katrina). I think it's more important to be able to survive in the mountains on our own. We just really don't know what is coming or what disaster we might face. Flexibility is important. Oh, and don't forget your pets when it comes to food storage, our puppies and kitties need to eat too!!! You may want to look into the cat evacuation kit that was mentioned in an earlier thread... lol!
