bytebear got a reaction from seashmore in request for suggestions re missionary finding
Community activities too. Just be a presence in the town. We did various church activities and invited the community. "Meet the Mormons" kind of thing. We also did a lot of street contacts. We'd just say, "Can we ask you a couple questions?" and ask a series of questions leading to a doctrinal truth like eternal families. Really, the best thing is to put yourself out there. In a small town, everyone knows the missionaries. You stand out, and so use that to your advantage. Wave. Be overly helpful. Chat. Get to know people's names who you run into regularly. We used to ride the bus every day, and chat with the bus drivers and passengers. Captive audience.

I use it because it does illustrate the next question you get asked, which is usually, "Well it's still doctrine, technically, isn't it? I mean, you do believe in polygamy!" Well, I suppose so. But I also believe that animal sacrifice is doctrine. I mean it was ordered by God, so it's a true doctrine, right?

Great analogies. And imagine if you were constantly asked if you sacrificed animals in your church? Uh, no. not for a while now.

bytebear got a reaction from Midwest LDS in Star Wars terrorists, or Why Rogue One Is My Favorite (and Least Favorite) Installment
The 9/11 terrorists had no intention on a mission that betters humanity. They wanted to destroy by any and all means necessary those who oppose their ideology. Their mission was to destroy, not to protect.
Rogue One and the "Rebels" are about destroying a weapon that will be used to kill millions of people. They weren't going after civilian outposts just because they supported the Empire.
Simply put, military targets of an evil regime vs civilian targets done for no reason other than to cause fear.

Oh, I wanted to add another observation. By having the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith confirmed through the spirit, it adds to your testimony of Jesus Christ. He lives! And he hasn't forgotten us.

I just want you to know that this is exactly right. You do need to study, gain knowledge and understanding. And then as you ponder and pray, God confirms what you have learned.
Congrats!

It's one thing to ask for understanding on the changed wording of the Book of Mormon. It's another to try to convince someone who's entire religious understanding of the Trinity is being challenged. I don't think Blossom is trying to argue the point. It's just a lot for someone new to the LDS doctrine of the Godhead to grasp. Just as I have a hard time understanding the Trinity. So, let's stop trying to prove the point. I think the point is made, and it will take time, study and the Holy Ghost to really understand the nuances. In other words, give Blossom some room to study and understanding without chastising her for defending a position which is perfectly natural for her to have.

Here's a question for you. Can a modern prophet clarify scripture? Could a NT apostle and or Christ himself interpret OT scripture giving it different meaning than was commonly thought? (i.e. confound the Pharisees)?
A quick Google search says that at least one non-LDS Bible scholar believes so.

There are several possible answers.
1) The original manuscript/translation had it as "son of God" but it got changed in the printers manuscript and/or publication.
2) Smith saw the scripture through the eyes of one who understands the role of Christ as the son of God, and believed the verse was more logical to his understanding, and not to Nephi's Old Testament understanding of God.
3) Joseph Smith was inspired/called by God to clarify the verse (going back to reason 2), which is my belief.
