  1. The elbow and the smack, I can sorta see. This one, not so much. She would be great as security in a biker bar.

  3. I think it could have to do with laws of the land. It was legal for a Roman to require someone to carry a burden for a mile. It was legal for a Roman to take a coat from a Jew. Some examples: Now, it is legal for the government to tax our income before we even receive that income. To follow Jesus' teaching to the letter, we then need to donate an equal amount to government programs, giving them our cloak along with our coats. It is not legal (in the US) for someone to drive a car without insurance and drunk, and take the life of a provider. IMO, it is not required by Jesus for the family to starve themselves and lose their home because the father was killed and the driver was uninsured. The family, in taking the driver to court, could request court-ordered alcohol treatment as part of the settlement (this may be only in certain states), and help to save that person from him/herself.
  4. Actually Hordak, I heard an awful lot of people blaming the church for their mental illnesses when I lived in Utah, and others who were not members blaming it for "doing this" to their loved ones. And it's obvious that the members realize there's a lot of porn usage in the church, as there are talks against it every GC.
  5. Not being an endowed member, I can't vote. But if I could, I would vote for the "prophet himself" option. Though I would be happy with him announcing it over the pulpit rather than coming to my house and visiting himself. Question: if my house is mortgaged, can I donate it? The way I understand the law of consecration, the church would provide living quarters for myself and my family, my money would go to the church and the church would provide food and clothing, etc. Correct?
  6. Completely agree, I was just clarifying what I thought Jesus meant at the time. In a world where most people are right-handed, to be hit on the right cheek usually means you are being backhanded, which is/was considered more of an insult than an actual pain. Who says you must have anger in your heart when you sue? I know of parents and grandparents who have sued with very heavy heart in a tough love scenario. Picture this. A man works for a company that tells him to get the job done, period. So rather than using safety equipment and climbing a ladder (ladder they had was too short and the manager didn't want to go buy another) he climbs into the shovel part of a bulldozer and is lifted 12 feet by another employee controlling the dozer. He looses his balance and falls, breaking his neck. His family is left without an income, and without a father/husband. Two scenarios: one, the company is insured and gives them a huge settlement to provide for the minors. Or, the company may fight payment every step of the way. But the widow has to provide somehow, so pursues a lawsuit when she otherwise might not have. Also, she now has legal fees, and the pain she had to drag her children through. Is she wrong for pursuing the money when her husband did the unsafe act, even if his boss told him to? BTW, this is not a hypothetical situation. I know of someone in my business (though not my company) who was killed this way. In that situation, the widow did get the generous payout from the company's insurance. Should she not have? The BoM has many stories about people taking their complaints to judges when it got out of hand. It is admirable when people are able to forgive and move on, but when someone could go bankrupt and starve due to another's actions, it is logical and moral to require that someone else to pay for it.
  7. Pam, have you ever watched judge shows? It's pretty easy to tell when people shouldn't be suing. Like, when their dog is larger than teacup size...or when someone hit you because you were beating them down...or when they withdraw their child from your daycare without notice because you were mistreating the child. You're a sensible person, and I'm sure any lawsuit you are currently pursuing does not fit into the "bogus" category.
  8. This is much better than the nursery in our ward.
  9. Here's the story from a dog training blog about some people who tried to adopt from an SPCA, I thought of it when I saw this thread. Trying to Save Buddy, an SPCA Dog From a High Kill Shelter
  10. OK, I was given to understand that getting smitten on the right cheek means backhanded, or in otherwords is more an insult than physical pain. If someone is truly hurt, they have the right and the duty to fight back (at an attacker, in the moment) or pursue damages. Sometimes pursuing damages will cause others to have protection that the original victim did not have, as a bite to the wallet is often what gets things moving in a corporation. When the judge awarded her with more than she'd needed or asked, what was she going to do, turn around and hand it back to the defending lawyer? Some injuries result in lifelong pain and suffering, how do you put a price on that?
  11. Here are some good ones. I really enjoy reading dumb criminal stories! Dumb Criminal Suspects
  12. Welcome to the forums.
  13. What's your landlord situation? Can you request an apartment exchange, with the noisy neighbors downstairs? Well, then your floor will thump.
  14. I had a friend who did a liquid fast for 2 weeks, then ate pizza. There went her detox....and all regular system workings.... Vort, read here Master Cleanser Diet: All About Stanley Burroughs Master Cleanse
  15. Candyprpl, I wouldn't say anything. If they are tracting in a yucky neighborhood, they probably have a pretty good idea what sort of people they are working with. She may not have turned her life around yet, and may not with these missionaries, but with persistence she could in a year or two. They aren't wasting their time working with her (or trying to). At the very, very least, those kids will grow up and remember the Mormons who always showed up clean and in nice clothes and were kind. If the missionaries want to drug up while on their mission, they will do so, with or without this particular contact.
  16. My husband talked to the bishop before he was ordained an elder. The bishop said a fast is no liquids, no food. My husband then proceeded to fast and pray for 3 days in preparation for becoming an elder. I think, had the bishop known he would do that, he would have said water was OK. Anyway. Hubby drank half a glass of water both nights before bed, and that was it. So it's definitely possible that it was full many-days fasts that the ancients went through. I am curious about the 40-day fasts, myself.
  17. My brother is really focused on looks. Don't know why that is exactly. Now I can see it could possibly be because he's LDS....LOL He's a lot pickier than weight or size though. It's sad, I know a few YSA in his YSA ward, they are very nice girls, but he doesn't like the eyes/hair/whatever and refuses to look much farther than that. It's resulted in some heartbreak for him, probably a lot more before it gets any better.
